My thoughts exactly, such an honest car and look at that engine bay! So honest and well used, in a good way tho :agree:
Looks sweet, I like silver phase 2s, I'm sure you will do a good job to :)
Had a spare couple of hours on the R5 tonight - fitted a sony cd player which took ages. Firstly old pioneer stereo had been spliced into the car loom so had to sort that out. Lots of soldering which I hate! Then when I went to fit the ariel cable in the headunit found out guy Id bought it off had split the old ariel in the unit.
So ended up having to strip down the head unit! But all sorted now.
Just cleaning the interior light circuit board tonight as its abit coroded!
However was good tonight to see all the dashboard switches light up :)
Next job will be to sort glovebox light and boot lights out plus change bulb in one of the front fogs.
James
Not much progress on the R5 but have managed to get the interior light and map reading light working again plus the glovebox light.
Just a couple of pics I took today before taking the car out for a spin!:)

Looks cracking James :agree:
Well was bored tonight and didnt feel like watching the footie so decided to strip the rear of the 5 out so I can make a start on the sagging quarter panels - got abit carried away and ended up with a living room like this!
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee250/Mauncerblades/DSC00280.jpg
Anyway next step of the project is to get these all nice and clean
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee250/Mauncerblades/DSC00281.jpg
It was too dark to take a pic of the stripped rear but all I can say is its imaculate and I was in shock at how good a condition its in! Big thumbs up to Roger for keeping the R5 in such good condition! :)

If you want the rear doorcards to look like new, get yourself some spray glue and carefully stick the original fabric back on. I done mine and a couple of hours later they were like new, total cost of £4 ;)

I had a try with some spray glue and hve sorted them best I can but there not perfect but will do for now. The main problem I have is on the passenger side doorcard next to the door handle where the card seems too have shrunk which isnt too great - No idea how im going to sort that!

Cheers Andy - you should see the amount of dirt that comes out of them its proper vile! This one didnt even look that bad but was full of crap!
To finnish today I now have working foglamps and rear boot light. Plus gave under the bonnet a very quick clean. Was good to see shes still on her original engine!
Decided today to tackle the engine bay. After a good clean it isnt uber spotless but does look loads better. Also got the bumper put on correctly as it wasnt held on very well! Speedo had also packed up but it was just the connector behind the clock that needed a clean, plus gave the tyres a good pump up. Next job is to replace the front driver seat and get a new steering wheel. Plus get some interior plastics that are missing.

Including rear speaker quarters that are very clean!
Rear parcel shelf will look nice too!
Well big thanks to Jon aka 5279 for sorting out and rebuilding my carburettor today.:agree:
It was in quite a state and looked like it had never been rebuilt, also the accelerator pump was completely seized.
R5 runs loads better now although I need to get the fuelling tweeked alittle for optimum performance!

No idea mate as when it was put on the rollers i was told it was too lean so id imagine running richer will up the fuel bill!
Seeing my old R5 and how clean the standard speedlines were! It put the speedlines on mine to shame, so after abit of cleaning tonight I managed to make them presentable! Next job is to try and give the paintwork abit of a detail to make the R5 look presentable. Although it will require a full respray!

Ok this weekends project has been to give the rear boot panel a spray totry and make the car more presentable. Am quite happy with how its comeout, its not perfect by any means but looks loads better than it was before. Problem is it put the under light trims to shame so will prob tackle them next.

Got borred tonight so decided Id have a look at the condition of the battery tray and what other hidden surprizes id find underneath.
Well the tray is knackered and I need a new one! No surprize there, but with the amount of rust i was conserned id need to replace all the metal underneath but luckly it just had a little surface rust which has now been rubbed back, crust'd and then undersealed.

I rubbed the oil feed pipes from the radiator down with very fine sand paper as they are alloy and they came up sweet.. And the fan motor cover.. You could take the actuator off to and spray it black to tidy it up abit.. Or get another actuator I'm sure johnny5 was selling one cheap.. See if you could get that boost up a touch :) I took all my manifold off when I did the headgasket it would be a pig to get off on its own I think.. Once you start cleaning it's hard to stop :)

Well we - well minly Jon drilled and retapped inlet manifold for new inlets, changed all manifold bolts to new binx ones. Fitted enlarged turbo elbow. Then put all breather pipe system together, refitted carburetor and then bled the coolant. Took her for a run which was good. Had an issue with top radiator hose where the bleed nipple is leaking :(. Will try a new bleed nipple in and see if that cures it.
As for future plans - an under bonnet lining is required next.
Looking really good mate :agree:

Its a shame that I never got a reply from the renault dealers who originally sold the car - youd have thought they may have had an interest in a car they sold 22 years ago!

Did you buy this car from Roger in twickenham?
Edit. I just noticed you mention Roger in your first post. He lives the street behind my parents house. He owned that car from new and took pretty good care of it, it's good to see it staying standard and not being ruined by modifications.
Well was woken up at 7:30am this morning with the return of my R5.
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee250/Mauncerblades/DSC00492.jpg
So today was spent, stripping the kit off plus removing the interior.
Steering collum is completelly knackered plus theres a really weird smokey smell in the car. No electrics work - possibly flat battery.
Thats progress no for the time being, probably new year now before any restoration work is carried out.

Got 2 buddy, phase 2 black and a phase 2 white. Black one is nearly done :) white one is still work in progress - waiting for decent weather!!!!!
Trying to keep them oem+, standardish, lowered with 15" alloys. But getting standard parts that are cheapish is a challenge, lol.

Who is doing the refurb mate? fully recommend metal magic at Barnsley pal.
Can second that. Mine looked stunning when I got them back.
Coming together now mate. D you think it will be done for summer?
Great project, love seeing you keep it original and giving it a real spruce up
Unfortunately wont be done for summer, needs a small bit of welding and a full respray. Jonny's sorted out the front bumper and skirts. If I could get welding done then that'd be a big problem sorted. Problem is I can't weld!
Turbines will be refurbished at a later date as they need 45 profile tyres
Small update - speedlines off for a refurb and turbines temporarily fitted
got back my bumper skirts and steering wheel from Jonny5 and what am amazing job him and his dad have done on them. :agree:

Glad you enjoyed the pizza Jonny! :)

What tyre size is that?
I dont usually like turbines but they look really good :)
Let me know if you decide to stick with the OEM look and want to offload these :)
Too late mate, I exchanged them with Paul for a mint refurbished set of turbines.
They will look better on Paul's mint 5 than my "work in progress one"
and thanks James for the exchange, just finished removing the red paint from the 3rd and 4th wheel today, next job is to spray the fins and fit the other 2 tyres.
What tyre size is that?
I dont usually like turbines but they look really good :)
Hi Jonny, tyre size is 165 50 15, the wheel width of 6.5J allows a bit of stretch but not too much.
A little more part progress in the end of 2013
Cant decide weather to go 100% OE or OE+
Anyway at moment have parts to go either ways.
As mentioned before exchanged my polished turbines for a refurbished set with tyres.
Bought OE leads and fan belt - plus managed to get hold of very good condition doorcards.
Under bonnet lining also purchased.
Plus managed to get hold of a really good condition bosal centre section - hopefully I have a matching bosal backbox on its way.

Ha Ha tell me about that one mate, its definetly given me the inspiration to do it on my drive though seeing you doing it, I guess the missus would have a grumble at me cleaning bits up in the dining room though :D , I guess she would get over it
Got some photos from Simon who's doing the welding on my 5
Car is now rot free - and this was a 5 that looked pretty solid when I bought it.
New inner and outer sills plus jacking points and a few other areas repaired - totally quality work.
Here the photos for anyone interested - hopefully get the 5 back later in the week.

Some top work there. :agree:
Just goes to show how much seam sealer is hiding on some of these cars no matter how solid they look in areas. :)
When i had my jacking points done the rotten floor pan was amazing, looked decent all paint still in tact until you tapped it and it sounded crunchy:disagree:
Had to replace right up to half way up the clutch pedal. The amount of hidden rot was unreal.
Good effort for getting it all sorted. :agree:
All these minty underside of gtt's is making me want to get busy on a bare shell resto......shame the bank manager says no:laugh:
thanks james..glad your happy with work done, its gave me big motivation to crack on and finish mine. thanks mate.
Little Update
5 now home - so have started working on some of the brackets.
Also decide to get water pump off block, only two dodgy bolts which came out with mole grips - not bad to say its original water pump!
All brackets have been U-pol Acid 8 and then Engine enamelled except pedal box which was satin black'd.
Few photos for anyone interested

You really need a garage lol my mrs would kill me..
Little short of cash at the moment so R5 part spend has been curtailed.
However have been refurbishing a few more parts.
Had to get a new heater box as the control tabs are broken on the original. Sorted all that and when I tried connecting heater controls the housing snapped so now need a new heater control unit!
Anyway Ive carried on with parts overhaul Completed the rocker cover today and my koni shocks which are now in OE Black!
Pics for anyone interested.

That light blue sticker with the spark gap instructions is a nice touch. If I had a standard 5 I know I'd be a nightmare for getting things just right :ashamed:
Awesome James :)
One question on the new radiator fan motor, mine never didn't come with the locking fan nut and it has been a right pig finding one as they are reverse turn and 1.0 pitch :( I couldn't get mine of the old one :( where did you get yours?

Try Renault, Part number 77 01 205 080. It's a kit of bits and bobs for fitting the blade to the fan. I don't believe its all needed but it does include the nut.
Cheers for all the nice comments :agree:
Little bit more progress
Had fun today stripping sub frame down.
Some pics as usual for anyone interested.
Going to have fun next month refurbishing subframe.
