View Full Version : Project: Old Codger
Just picked up my new project car, project old codger, an E reg Renault 9 GTL in red :)
It's only a 1.4 C2J but that's fine as its just going to be a restoration project.
Pics will follow
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/os8472/805e5147.jpg
Well I've been driving it for a day and a half now and she's performed faultlessly :) and the boat like suspension isn't as bad as I first thought it would be, I've started a list of the jobs that need doing.
Paintwork needs mopping
Both front jacking points need replacing
Both front wings have a small amount of surface rust
Small ding in the middle of the bonnet
Small rust patches on the top of inner wings
Rocker cover gasket leaking
Rocker cover to inlet breather pipe missing
Gearbox oil needs flushing and replacing
Aux belt a little warn
Small leak between downpipe and centre section of exhaust
Fuel gauge now then needs a bash to get it working
Headunit looses its presets when turned off
Drivers seat foam base has started to collapse
In the grand scheme of things, that little lot is bugger all, progress with this will be slow as it has MOT and Tax till September so itll act as transport while the undergoes any work, then once the MOT runs out I'll treat it and fix up the above list, there are a few bits that need to done sooner rather than later, like the missing breather pipe and the oil leak but there no biggie.

Done my first 2 jobs on the 9
First I replaced the old wiper blades with some new flat blade jobs, now I can see when it's raining without having to listern to the wipers scraping there way across the windscreen.
Second I decided to take a look at the drivers seat, the foam on the right side had collapsed so every time u went left you'd fall out the window :crap:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/os8472/9e3b7ffe.jpg
I got some new foam off the local market
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/os8472/2c9665c4.jpg
But when I got the fabrics off I found the foam although damaged was intact and was infact no longer support by the seat pan due to a big split in the metal
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/os8472/ff82f8eb.jpg
A few small strips of metal and pop rivits later it's all 1 piece again, yes this is only a temporary fix until I can get hold of a new seat pan

That's so cool. Loads of potential
As it turns out the mileometer might be a tad ambitious, a did a trip last night that was exactly 10 miles, I know this as both the 5 and the works van told me so, the 9 told me it was 12 miles:crap: this would explain as to why I seemed to get 52mpg, more like 42mpg :( but on the bright side that's still good for a car that's 24 years old

pop ya seat out again and i'll weld it up for ya boss
Haven't done much with the 9 except put fuel in it and drive it, that was until the banding in 1 of the tyres let go causing massive vibration and distortion of the tyre, had the road not been wet I recon the tyre would have overheated and blown. Take it from me people, even if the tyre has plenty of tread left on it, if it's old and cracking get it replaced. I can't afford a new set of tyres at the moment so I've temporarily fitted a set of Clio alloys with toyo's on, ok so there 15" not 13" and they don't suit the car but at least there safe till I can afford a new set
For those that wanted to see what the 9 looks like on alloys, here ya go

waste of monies! F7 it up! i've got all the wiring notes still so an evenings work :)
Done 3 jobs on the 9
1) the outer cv boot on the passenger side shaft needed to be replaced, shaft off and boot replaced in no time.
2) there's annoying vibration at 50mph, wheel off and rebalanced, no change :(
3) gear oil well past it's best, while the shaft was out I drained the rest of the oil, flushed the box and replaced the oil, gear change feels much better.

It's all right faffing around Oli. But you know it's gonna happen, get the 5 finished (LOL) and then itching for another project???? Don't fight it.
Andy the plans for the 9 are growing larger by the day, they now include
5gtt front brakes ( got my old calipers in the shed).
Less wobbly suspension (5gtt ph1 springs & dampers on the front, mk2 Clio rear dampers on the back).
Polybush the wishbones & anti roll bar.
New bottom ball joints and track rod ends.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d157/Gatordonald/intredasting_RE_Toothfairy-s685x567-170917.jpg
Ph1 jobs by the look of it but you would have to use the 9 top mounts as the ph1 jobs don't line up with the fixing holes
Been abit slack with this project thread, mainly as all I've done with the 9 is use it and abuse it and she's performed well.
The suspension has steadily got more and more boat like so much that in hard cornering the outer front will drop straight onto the bump stop and lift the back well a foot off the ground  but I've managed to source a brand new pair of front dampers for feck all notes :D
The passenger front wheel bearing has decided its time to die aswell so I'm gunna be clever about replacing it, I'be got a pair of valver hubs which I'll fit new bearings to and stick them on the 5 and use the 5 hubs on the 9 :) while the hubs are off I'll replace the track rod ends and bottom ball joints.
Oh yeah, almost forgot, the rad fan which was controlled by the OE switch stopped working, a temp bridge of the plug proved the fan to be ok and the switch to be at fault, so I ordered a new 1 from renault and fitted it and guess what....... it was a duff switch :( so for now I've got 2 wires leading inside the car to a manual switch tie wrapped to the side of the centre console.
Fitted the passenger side GTT hub and a new track rod end on the 9 and the good news is the wheel wobble has gone but I still have a noisy bearing on the drivers side, but the other GTT hub is ready and waiting for when I've got 5mins spare.
Drivers side GTT hub and track rod end fitted and the new OE front dampers fitted, yes some of the boat like characteristics have been reduced but not completely, whilst changing the dampers I found both springs were showing signs of wear but more worryingly one of them had a bend in it :/ so I'm on he hunt for a new pair of springs, I'm thinking I'll fit something abit stiffer, maybe off a R19 or similar
Was out the 9 Saturday night and nearly ended up in a tree after the top mount of the drivers side rear damper let go as I rounded a corner, the damper pushed through the top and the whole drivers side rear damn near hit the deck
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/os8472/10B5B1B8-7C90-4D1E-A70D-9B79137C0A85-9650-00000B4E928F0B99.jpg
So I decided to get on with fitting the mk2 Clio dcu rear dampers donated by MarkyB. All they needed to make them fit is to open the metal insert in the bottom bush from 11.85mm to 14.02mm, using the stock clio top mounts too they fitted straight on. As you can see from the pic the Clio damper (at the top) isn't much longer than the stock 9 jobs and as there the stock item for the clio they perfectly comfortable while still being a little stiffer than the 9 items.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/os8472/5DEDD780-A05E-4F03-8F36-51E3F2C32EA4-9650-00000B4E89C63B68.jpg
End result the back feels so much nicer and instead of annoying understeer it now has death dealing lift off oversteer, which is fun:D
The rad fan on the 9 has been abit of pain for a little while, first off the switch packed up and replacement didn't work so a temporary dash mounted switch was needed. The fact Renault never fitted a relay probably didn't help matters and now the fan motor itself has started making unpleasant noises, so I decided to make use of the old 10" spal fan formally on my R5.

What 9 lads? According to the dvla there's next to none left :( something like 8no. 9turbos left and that's on and off the road
It's got no MOT at the minute as I knew she wouldn't pass with hand size holes in the sills, so it's a case of doing all the welding now and make her solid so when I do get her tested she won't need to come off the road again for any major repairs.

Mate you should see the sills, you can literally put your hand in them, how it got a ticket ill never know, I was half tempted to take it to the same garage for a MOT just to give more time to save up the cash for the repairs but after seeing how bad it was I'm glad I didnt
Looks bit crusty oily but nothing that you cant fix, so must of beern to 'stevie wonder's mot's last time lol Keep up the good work fella, ill wondering what the picture of the 9's sills will look like...
Given me something to think about taking the wings off shed 11 to check the state of my inner wings, after the mot! lol

Cheers bud, just the sills to go and she'll be nice and solid again, I figure while I'm at ill underseal the whole car to be on the safe side
good progress mate! the state of the car looks sh*t comparing to my 9:scratch:
I guess it shows how bad these cars can get if there not looked after properly :crap:
I definatly think a good undersealing is in order lol
How much miles did yours have?
Mine made only 118tkm when i bought it so maybe that contributes to the somewhat better bodywork.
Mine only has visual rust but the underside is solid.

Mine has 86000miles on the clock, I think half the trouble with mine is that it looks like it was never properly under sealed from new but then again it's French so it was never gunna last forever lol

A little less stressed than last time :crap: but at least progress is being made. The outer anti roll bar bushes are the same as clio 172 items so I've got some jobs for those, the inners I'm hoping will fit too but have to wait and see.
Both wishbones were bent so I've got new ones and at a pretty good price too. If all goes to plan they should all go back on Saturday morning and the 9 can finally drop back onto its wheels for abit while I wait for a slot in the chop shop to do the sills.

Been working on the 9 tonight with a fair amount of success :) the new wishbones and anti roll bar outer bushes are fitted, just need the new inner bushes to turn up and she'll be ready to drop back on to its wheels :)
Here's what the old outer bushes looked like, note the red insulation tape to take up the gap where the rubber has worn through, worrying as this car was maintained by a Renault stealership

Dunno, I'm using clio 172 items :)
Finally the new wings have arrived :)
Should have them fitted and have the front bumper refitted by Tuesday so it can get to the chop shop :)
Got board so I got the new wings loosely fitted :)
They look good and the fitment is damn near perfect, just abit of tweaking on the drivers side behind the indicator but I figured that may happen as the inner wing was the worst there.
How ever I now have a new problem, the new wings turned up with no cut outs for the side repeaters, do I leave them out and go for a nice smooth look down the side?

Started the welding, got the inner sill and floor pan done before the gas ran out, so I moved onto tweaking the wings abit, because of the extensive repairs to the inner wings the new panels didn't quite sit right, a quick buzz with the grinder and both wings line up with the bonnet nicely.
Also drilled the wings for the side repeaters and then given the inside of the wings a coat of galvanised paint to reduce the chance of them rotting from the inside out.
Drivers side sill is now all fixed, thanks MarkyB for the help and the use of your unit

Once the seam sealer is dry the whole sill will get a coat of galvanising spray followed by wax oil, then it's flat the wings and paint.
After all that just put it all back together and she's ready for the mot

It'll be better on yours to start with, I've only 68bhp (at best) to drag it along so in 5th it won't accelerate at all lol
Your turbo should make it perfectly usable
The old speakers in the 9 have been sounding ****e for ages and have needed changing.
Old on the left, new JBL GTO on the right, should do nicely :)

Because the 9 is going to be my grand tourer I wanted to make it nice and quite inside so I ordered 10 sheets of self adhesive sound deadening material, it took 8 sheets to do just the front doors :/ straight away the panels sound more solid when tapped.
At a guess I'm going to need another 30 sheets to do the rear doors, all the floor and underneath and behind the rear seats.
I took a DB reading at 70mph in 5th and got 89db , hopefully once I'm done it should be a lot less

LOL - you won't see any difference in MPG Ipswich. I made the fatal error of changing my Scooby's low ratio import box to a uk spec item for 2 reasons:-
1 - To make it more tolerable on the motorway. 4k @ 70mph not good, once done a better 3k
2 - To squeeze a little more mpg out of the horrendous 22mpg car - it made absolutely no difference. I assume that this is down to the fact that even though the RPM is lots lower, the work rate at that rpm has gone up. I would imagine that the relationship between rpm and work done is directly linea.
Made me Scooby slow and boring.

Isn't this thread due a slight update ;-)
Isn't this thread due a slight update ;-)
Soon it will ;)
I've been lax in keeping this thread up to date, very bad of me :(
A lot has changed since I last updated, the main thing being then engine swap, which was a rather large failure and resulted in a modified version of the original engine going back in.
I'd bought a second hand C1J turbo and with help from MrB got it fitted and running in a day, it nearly made it home as the turbo I'd bought which is been assured was a minter was actually a complete dog and dropped 8 litres of oil in the space of the 12 miles it took to get home.
After much searching I'd got a good turbo and all seemed well till an oil line split and the bottom end died on it's arse.
The only solution, the original C2J bottom end with a C1J turbo head. The current spec of the engine is standard C2J bottom end, C1J turn head, inlet, exhaust, 2" turbo back side exit exhaust, forge fmic and a JP Racing built carb.
It's not the fastest car in the world but it's a giggle and a few posh motors have been surprised by it, the guy in the Alfa GT was not happy lol :)
And now comes the bad points, it needs a new speedo cable, the paintwork is horrible and can't be saved and I haven't got round to fitting the new rear seats to match the R11 turbo front seats I'd fitted.
I would love to through money at this car and get it mint but I'll be honest, I have neither time or money to do so. Because of this I think it's for the best I find her a new owner who can give her the love she rightly deserves.
