View Full Version : My First R5 GTT
So guys, finally bit the bullet and travelled down to Kent to see KeefaGT about his R5GTT Phase1. D695 VPL.
So on the car there is abit of work to be done I.E engine bay work. But simplistic stuff.
But the reason this motor has appealed to me so well, is that the shell is absolutely mint. Credit to Keith for keeping this 5 as a very good example. The interior needs some work and there are a few 'garage' dinks on the car. Which i will be getting a dent specialist to knock out all in one. I thought it might be too true to not find any rust, so we did find a small patch which will need some attention. On the passenger side rear window. (bottom left corner). I will be getting this sorted as my top priority!! :D
This is my very first thread and will be snapping some pics as me and my bro GTphil get this motor on the road in the next few week. Heres a couple of pics as i picked her up today. Funnily enough we were spotted on the way home!!
Its a small world :p

I have that full K-tec body kit here ready to go on and a respray in flip purple booked for next week:cooter:

You can shove your K tec body kit where the sun dont shine brotherrrr! :cooter:
The plan for the motor incase any body wants to know. Is not to make it a chav mobile! Keeping the Renault 5 GTT Phase 1 retro nostalgia. Run moderate boost through the T25 thats sat on there. I want it to be reliable and turn heads for the right reasons!!

If you ever need another t25, I will have a hardly used one for sale soon, as going to run a t2 hybrid on my ph1

Sounds like a gr8 plan Josh - Love the phase 1's - do it proud and get a roof rack on there, but hold the dangley shi* from the bumper - leave that for the VW brigade.
I'm actually surprised at the shell, we haven't had the side skirts off yet but the inner sills are mint, as are the jacking points, screen surround, bumper mounts, inner arches, headlight panel, so hopefully the outer sills are the same.
A real shame about the scab just under the rear quarter window shouldn't be too much of an issue for a decent body shop to sort out along with a few other slight cosmetic issues, dents and the like. Then a general deep clean should see a very nice looking phase one.
Shame about the decals as I really think they set the silver phase one's off.:(
If anyone has any tips regards the phase one body kit and how to get it looking nice and dark again instead of sun bleached grey, I'm all ears.:agree:
Going to put all the bits back on the engine that we have already sourced tomorrow, but unfortunately the rad hasn't turned up today so we won't be able to get it running until it arrives or probably after as we are both very tight for time at the moment. :crap:
A full service and a few other little jobs then tax and MOT ready for a summer of retro boost!
P.S wish my shell was as good as this you little (big) wiener!!:cooter:

I looked at this before you! Will make an ace car;)
Loads of work done today!! :p
Downpipe fitted, turned into a really sh*t job due to the flange on the exhaust not being suited to the downpipe we had. So we took the exhaust off and did abit of metal work, taking the exhaust off took some doing as it was tighter than a nuns tupence. In the end a good job done and onto the next one.
Fitted carb top, swirl pot and gave the car a full service. Fuel filter and all. So now just waiting on the radiator, boost gauge, oil breather pot and a little gauge pod :cooter:
So a few more hours required on her and we will be able to fire her up! Hopefully all is well and i can get an mot and some tax then sort out some cosmetics.
Unfortunately didnt take any in progress photos due to working my little batty off along with our kid. Sod knows what i would do without him. Nice one bro :D
Any updates r kid
Well today was the day she got fired up! Struggled with getting it started due to the thing sitting for a while.
Wired up the fan switch, and the fan. Put the alternator back on and tensioned the belt. Ran it for 10 minutes on the road to get the battery charged back up. Then it went away.
All that's left now is fitting an AFR gauge and sorting out the boost gauge. Should have it set up with tax and mot this Wednesday if all goes well. Engine sounds bang on... :cooter:

Very clean bay
So guys, the car now has M.O.T. Tax it tomorrow and woohoo we are away.
Slight problem with the brake lights which is still unsolved. Will try to get the car cleaned and a few pictures up in the next week or so.

Phase 1 rims ftw
Lots of stuff to do, not much time!! Haha. Taking the car to haz's gaff tomorrow to sort them brake lights out and get the heater matrix in. Then onto some cosmetics. I want some willy wheels bad. Or some deep dish alloys.
Well the way of the reanult 5 is kicking my arse at the moment!!
Managed to sort the brake lights, big thanks to Haz for taking my dash out and giving it a very good tidy up. Thanks pal. :agree:
But! On the way home the car kicked out of 5th and wouldnt go back in! Then taking the cover off found some issue to yet be resolved! Shame cause when it is running it's amazingly good fun
So guys i have sorted my gearbox issue!! The syncro on 5th gear was worn quite alot and the nut on the end had come off. So i split a gearbox of my brothers (second gear failed) Then removed the 5th syncro off that. Which was in much better condition to the one that was on. Rebuilt the gearbox back up and put thr correct amount of oil into it. Tested all gears whilst standing and all was fine. Took her for a test run and 5th gear never seemed so smooth . Really pleased as i didnt know exactly what i was doing! Big thanks to Matt@CodeRedMotorsport for the advice. What a chap.
Now i have a 5 that works and has no gremlins. FOR NOW. Like my brother said bad things come in 3's and ive had my 3 now. Fingers crossed!!
He hasn't even had time to clean it yet, what with fan belts thorwing, brake lights constantly on, haz taking the dash out and sorting a whole load of dodgey wiring and fitting a heater matrix:laugh:, fifth gear shatting it's self! All in less than a month:laugh::wasntme:
Not to mention all the parts he needed to sort and fit after he purchased it
Must admit that's a fair introduction to the gtt!:coffee:
Top darts tho for cracking on with it all;)
hands down to him , best way to learn i did not have a clue about cars until i bought my five.
Im going to valet it for him once im back in the country :)
so he can help me finish my wreck of a phase 2 lol
Wreck of a phase 2:rolleyes::confused::laugh: lol that has to be the biggest FALSE statement I have heard this year!
You will need a stiff drink when you see the state of the carpet in this car;)

love it josh, damn fine lookin 5, hats off too for pursuing the dream...err nightmare that is the gtt....:agree:
Haha all part of the fun! :agree: thanks for the compliments :D
Sorted the fuel leak I had last night and started upping the boost. Got to 22 psi with slight pinking. So we whipped it back down to 17-18 and it's like a dream. Main reason is because I put the lower octane fuel in like a pikey! So now running 18 as apose to 15!
Quick update, carb tuned to fuel at 18 psi. Previous owner had a 135 main jet furling it
So we stuck a 120 in then took the 2nd stage out a tad and sorted the air corrector. Thank to my brother for sorting me out... I have taken my back seats out. That's pretty much it. Car was running well rich. So bad my oil stinks of fuel. So an oil flush and change is in order!
:)Impressed with the fueling.
Before hand with even the slightest of throttle and it would drop straight into the 10's afr off boost:disagree:
It was fueling 11.4 WOT,
it now has
120 Main jet
1Mm air corrector
1.3Mm second stage
Fuels so much better off boost, and a steady 12.2 at WOT
Seems to go a lot better also:smokin:
Gotta love the rtoc carb articles;)
So ive been off work due to my rubbish knee being broken. But im back this week.
My aim for pod day is...
Get a patch of rust sorted.
Sort some bucket seats for the front
Get a front mount intercooler for that extra coule psi :smokin:
Lower it a couple inches.
Whilst been off ive managed to take the back bech out. I was really impressed with how clean the boot was under the carpet!!
The time has come to pull my finger out and get the car sorted. She's going to Haz next week for some body work whilst I do some work on the engine side of things with some pointers... Picking some bucket seats up at the weekend. So should be minty fresh for pod. Pics to follow in the next few week!
Hi all, car has been dropped off with Haz at Nocturnal Developments ready for alot of work to be carried out in giving the Phase 1 a face lift.
The main reason was to have a look at a rust patch that i have been concerned about. Also to spray my kit and have a general tidy up!
After stripping window and seals on the NS rear QT this is the patch i was concerned about!
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6428
So with that job was to take part of kits of and search for rust. Happy to find we found none! YAYYY :D. So we plodded on stripping alot of the car down.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6435
Ending up with most bits off! All ready for prep work and spraying. Due to kit being sun bleached and tired.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6437
Stripped very badly damaged seats out ready for some nice Cobreau seats to go in.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6433
Found a couple of cracks on the front bumper towing eye area which will be repaired before prep work and spraying.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6432
Prepared the tail for body work... We will continue tomorrow!
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6431
Also have cleaned under the outer seal on the window screen to make sure no rust was present or starting. It was filthy!
All spray work being carried out by Haz and im just helping with the donkey work! :agree:
Good to catch that rust early. Great that the rest is clear :agree:
Are the sills and bumper mounting areas all ok then? :)
Hi trev, yeah the underneath is solid. With a think underseal. Sills inner and out are mint, which is why I've jumped on it really quick so nothing else is affected. Really happy with the no rust situation cause it means I can splash out on other areas making it look nice and fresh. Bumper mount all amazingly good condition, don't think it's ever been off either no clips broken or anything. We took an arch off and there was some minty fresh phase 1 decal under there :wasntme:. So looks like I've got lucky all in all!
When we went to have a look at the car the only bit of rust I could find was the patch shown! even tho the bodywork wasn't the best I knew it was a good buy purely because of how solid the whole shell was;)
Now the kits off and there still isn't any rust that's made my day, I cannot stress how good a shell this car is. It has definatly spent a long time off the road at some point in it's life.
A good bit of work done today also guys, just wish I could be there to help out........
I'm just there to oversee really as I'm unsure how far I want Haz to go with it. Plus I've been giving the engine a good clean up and fitting some fancy new bits.
Flushed the coolant system using Ashys dishwater tablet method. Worked very well! Cheers bud. Fitted the new header tank and will be filled with nice coolant tomorrow after I've finished work.
Went in to see Haz after work and took some photos of what he has been upto today (some of it)
Couple shots of the rust being taken back, not gone to far gladly. Happy got on top before it became too serious
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6446
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6444
A shot of the bumper mounts just cleaned down ready for the bumper again.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6443
Couple of repairs to the front bumper
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6441
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6440
The boot lid after some filling for old spoiler holes... Looks like its had a gay tech on there at some point...
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6439
A shot of an arch repair too!
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6445
Theres plenty more too, big thanks to Haz for paying attention to detail and taking out all little niggles on the kit etc. Hes a top lad and does very good quality of work. The plan for the kit is to spray it satin black, in a special stiple effect paint. Haz was saying O.E is a very dark shade of grey as appose to black. Imo they look better black anyway.
Fitted a new header tank after flushing the coolant system. Thanks to Shackal for a fast product and car.crash aka marc for some hose bits what were needed :).
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6447
Should have this turned round quickly. Thanks chaps. :agree:
So flew down to the unit to have a chat with Haz and see what he had been upto.
Heres the grille before the refurb.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6454
This is the grille minus the badges (being refurbed and sprayed) afterwards.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6456
Then a close up so you can see the stiple effect is still visable.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=6455
I think these look awesome. Top job done. :coffee::smokin:

That stipple effect is top draw, very good work  keep the pics flowing
Went to pick the car up from Haz. Im not the best with a camera but heres a few shots. Bad weather never helps.
Re cap. Haz did a rust patch refurb and has fully refurbed all outer plastics. Repaired then sprayed. Maintaining that o.e stipled effect.

thanks
Nice one pal. What a bloke :coffee:
Sweet this. Crying out for some rims from the Renault stable. :agree:
So seen as though my car is in a million bits i thought i may aswell say why and what im doing. After Scoffs RR day (quality day by the way) I popped a HG on the way home. :wasntme:
Whilst taking my car apart i noticed that the person who had it before me really did not set it up fantastically. So while its in bits i thought i may aswell eliminate all contributing factors. The head was not torqued correctly and had lifted. All pistons seen coolant
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=7200
With that i stripped the head and sent it away for a resurface and all the valve seats to be done. Full job, decided to not bother with valve stem seals because i rev the car to over 7 grand anyway so they would be mulered anyways. Because the head was pretty skinny, i asked the chap to take a little out of the combustion chamer just to keep the compression down.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=7821
With that i decided to then fit a new adjustable fuel pressure regulator, cheers brigsy. Making sure tht fuel is good for high boost. Once that was done the head went on again and was torqued up to 75nm.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=7837
Now the next step which im curently doing isto fit a nice big intercooler to keep hem charge temps down. :) Many thanks to DaveReed for that. Nice piece of kit. The cooler will be flipped round this is to show the size of it. Beeeeast
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1567&pictureid=7839
Plans for the car are to get a new turbo when i can afford it and to get back to scoffs to do some more of this :D

haz did u use filler on that repair mate? av found the same on my 5
Which repair? There was a few areas, some had fibreglass or fibreglass filler first, then filler.
I like this car a lot. Reminds me of my last one.
Love the back end with the stiple effect Ph2 rear spoiler. Always wanted to see how that would look on a Ph1. Mine was colour coded, which was ace too.

Will the front bumper go on matey? How thick is the intercooler?
still not 100% if the bumper will go on once the cooler is bolted into place, the crossmember has already gone  I felt like I was committing a crime when I chopped it out:dearme:
chopped it out in one piece so if it ever does get returned to o,e it can be welded back into place quite easly I would have thought.
we won't be cutting the phase 1 bumper tho, got a phase 2 one to cut and get haz to paint the stipple effect to match the rest. That is of course if the original one won't go on, it looks to close to call.
Intercooler is 3'' thick, might not go on. So that bumper may be for sale in the future.
I like this car a lot. Reminds me of my last one.

Same cooler as mine josh by the looks of it. Rob@backyard pretty much hidden it behind his ph2 bumper on his ph1.
Yeah I think ill get it behind a bumper mate. Just plod on :D

Never noticed that, nice touch :agree:

rear quarter window. Mines is almost identical where the corrosion is just wondering if thats what u used ;)
with josh's there was only a small hole that had gone through, no point taking a welder to it just yet as it would only blow through the thin metal. properly cleaned up and fibreglass either side.
have seen the pics of yours though, i'd say a fair bit will fall in when you start cleanin it up so will want a few little peices putting in, also, where the rot is by the pedal is the top of the jacking plate panel so i'd have thought that would want looking at too.
josh, regards the bumper, if it catches it will be the same for both ph1 or 2 bumpers, keep it looking oe and i'll fettle the back ;)
Good job mate!
love the number plate VPL -Visable Panty Line:)
Cheers :agree: Visible Panty Line is good, but only on certain females

SO we got the car running again this weekend, got her upto temp. Next weekend ill sort out the tappets and re torque the head bolts. Tax the car, knock the boost down and get it to scoffs for setting up fuel wise with the new fuel pressure regulator. Hopefully it will make some decent power... time will tell.
Seriously, looking at all the headwork that's been done and with the new bits, and going off the previous times its been on the rollers and how it wants to carry on making power the more it's revved if you can get the boost upwards of 22lb it should easily make over 200hp, probably more towards 230:cool:
A very well sorted gtt indeed, zero rot the straightest gtt shell I have ever laid eyes on with a well sorted lump, just needs some coilovers, lowering a touch and some rims, either something Renault, of some sort of ats/starmag 13's :smokin:
Looking sweet with the new cooler.... :smokin:
I really like this car looks in great condition
Update on my car, 6ish month ago I took my car to scoffs. Unfortunately my turbo let go on the rollers. So I've been saving for a new turbo. My cars now set up for 18psi but I want to push more to get a 12 sec run at Santa pod. I'm at scoffs on the 14th to check for det and make final fuel adjustments. Hopefully getting my power figures to translate to times on track. A few pics for your delegation :D
