Hi guys,

I know some of you here are much better connected to the Clio scene than I am and I would like your opinions on the following if possible.

I've been asked by a Renault specialists to develop and tune a range of cost effective engine management systems for turbocharged 172 and 182's. The company has offered up a Phase 1 Clio 172 turbo for wiring and tuning development. However it looks like I may need to buy a Phase 2 to develop a solution for that also.

Here's the idea: I can pick up a 2002 Phase 2 172 which needs a little work for about a grand. I know what it will cost to perform a low boost turbo install with management.

The question is: what is the going rate for a second hand low boost Clio 172 turbo these days ? Imagine factory standard and tidy other than being turbocharged. What do people pay for them ? 3k ? 4k ? I had a search on the web but I couldn't find any past sales.

I'm not looking to make money from it but I need to make sure I cover at least the cost of building it. If they're only fetching 2.5-3k then it won't be all that viable.

Honest opinions welcome lads.

Chris :)

Wasn't there a guy selling a turbo'd 182 on here not so long ago for circa £5-6k? I seem to recall he since dropped the price (nearer £4.5k), but not sure if it's sold yet?

That's a 182 though.

Is this company going to be offering already-converted turbo Clio's for sale, or is your ecu & gubbins just part of a/their turbo conversion kit?

In a similar vane, I think there'd be a good market for you personally if you could offer a complete conversion kit, be it diy or drive-in/drive-out, that's competitively priced against the likes of K-tec.

http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2107 - £6k+ is a p1ss take, imho.

I think engine dynamics offer the conversion at less than 3k but I think a converted car will only go for circa 4.5k, nearly 5 k for a Clio is a big ask these days as you can pick them up for 1500. Colour of the car plays a big part, racing blue 182s and liquid yellows seem to go for a fair bit more than other colours

Thanks lads. The base car I have in mind is silver, so pretty run of the mill!

Mart, both I think, just that their original EMS supply has dried up and they would like something fully programmable to replace it with.

3.5k wouldn't be too much to ask then ? If I could return that then I'd be happy enough :)

£3.5k for a complete converted car, or just for the kit?

Either way, what type of power would this low boost kit produce?

I was asking what people thought a converted car would be worth once I'm done with it mart. I think their low boost kit is standard compression with 0.5bar from a GT28R or similar, so about 230hp.

Hmmmm..... You need a car to develop the kit Scoffski??? LINKY (http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=26861)

I could be open to supplying Millie's old Clio 172 in partnership to develop the system so at the end I get a preferential price for a Turbocharged Clio 172....???

Let me know what you think mate? :D

Hi Steve

Sorry, too expensive and too old :ashamed: What I mean is "too nice a condition" and "not what I'm looking for with this particular test" ;)

It must be a phase 2, drive by wire. I already have access to a phase 1 :)

I've found a cheap Phase 2 that needs a little work. If the car's only going to be worth 3k completed then I can't afford to put more than that in to it.

Daaaaaam. :(

I had visions of a replacement to my old VAG Clio there & getting my bucket seats out of the loft.

Certainly food for thought though for the future....!? :niceone:

That bad eh, I might pass on that idea then!

Do high boost, 300hp cars go for any more ? I can see that K-tec charge an awfull lot more for their high boost conversion.

There was a guy on ebay selling a late phase 1 low boost for 2k Chris :crap: (on there now I think for 2.2k, I asked & he said 2k)
The arse has really fallen out of the 172 market for some reason, stick a blue oval on it & it seems to be worth 5k all day

I am looking into a turbo conversion on my 172 as it's such a nice drive, but it does sound like a package deal isn't really worth the hassle for you mate.

Supply and demand, more people like fords= bigger price.

Thanks steve, it's definately not worth while doing one, it doesn't look like I'd break even. As it goes the company involved is supplying a car to save me the hassle :)

Scoff,

The 172/182 market in Oz is a lot stronger and a few people have talked about a turbo conversion. The market is also a lot smaller but tend to be a bit more flush.

I think they generally go with any advice from Cliosport and, if I remember correctly, the preference was for a Supercharger over a turbo?

The other obvious advantage for you is the Adaptronic support in Oz.

Check out http://www.ozrenaultsport.com/

Food for thought........

Hi Woz

Sounds good :) I don't have anything to do with the conversion or its supply though, I'm just providing the engine management and calibrations for another company. I will pass it on though :)
