View Full Version : Will it fail?

My jacking points are a bit soft. I know it is structural but how bad does it have to be to fail the mot? Mine are brown and look a little soft but no holes and I can't poke through them with a screwdriver. Is this likely to pass? Any mot assessors here?

Give them a good clean up and see whats left?? Looks a bit rusty like but hard to tell without a prod from a screwdriver.

Id get a wire brush attatchment on a drill and clean it up. If it doesnt hole them treat the rust and paint, pass mot happy days.

My jacking points are exactly the same as the ones in the picture and my mot man said it was just about a pass, I'm on quite good terms with him and get the feeling if I had gone elsewhere I wouldn't have got a ticket:scared:

He also mention that he would want them sorting before he does another test:laugh:

Sounds like it is worth a go then. I will get the angle grinder out then and clean them up.

Thinking wire brush as angle grinder is quite likely to make holes ;) although if they need doing for this MOT thats all you can do

Knotted wheel on a grinder is usually ruthless but effective for finding out if its solid :D

well the car failed on a few things..

mainly the front jacking points and where they meet the sills excessively corroded.
offside front suspension arm ball joint dustcover excessively damaged.
parking brake efficiency below requirement.

i knew the jacking points were rusty just needed to know where needs to be done. i suppose a new ball joint and a clean up of the rear brake pads and discs will sort those problems. just the welding.....:(

jacking points are easy to get over and make them last a bit longer,there separate from the main body so not a real worry,id just plate them with sheet,take some templates with cardboard and away you go,easy!!!

i think i will just order the new ones from renault and get them replaced properly. i am now wondering if the sills are shot. i will get the skirts off tomorrow and take a look.

i also had an advisory. there was a leak on the rear brake balance unit/compensator.

i suppose i should look on the positives. not a alot of failure points and most seems straightforward.
just the dreaded welding to sort out.

Bit of an update.

So I took the side skirts off so I could see how bad the sills were. I am surprised as they don't seem all that bad compared to the jacking points. It looks like the drivers side has been replaced and the passenger side has been repaired. All feels pretty solid though.

Only the front part and the jacking points look like they need replacing. Here are some pics. I would appreciate some of your thoughts.

looks pretty good, will take abit of effort to clean the front up but better to do it now than wish you'd done it in a year or 2

have a go making you own angle grinder and 16g sheet steel 1220mm X 2440mm is £40
and cardboard for template as j$£5GTT said.

made mine wasn't difficult

good job. they look pretty good.

i am struggling finding where the jacking point ends and the sill starts. it just all seems one rusty lump. also i think a previous owner has added some steel plate which is confusing me further.
i was just trying to find out if the sills look solid enough and it is just the jacking points that need doing.

I replaced mine as they were soft enought to push a screwdriver through best do them now and replace jacking points instead of later.

My jacking points aren't perfect but do the job and save some money
