Hi all.

Changed the bottom pulley to a campus one last week and after doing so noticed there was a feint tap tap rattle rattle noise ( think large ball bearing gently being rattle in a roses tin )

Today I tweaked my setup and gave it death :wasntme:

Now the rattle rattle tap tap noise is pretty bloody loud. Its like a shaken ball bearing in a roses tin.

The noise is coming from gearbox side.

I cant feel anything through any pedals or steering

It only happens on load not on feathered throttle , or idle. In gear or not.

No smoke from engine , not breathing heavy , box changing fine.
Ideas ?

Does it disappear with the clutch pedal pressed down?

Hmm. Doesnt appear to be coming from that part of the engine tho ? Definatly sounds like its from the gearbox , or around there .

My money is on a bottom end failure.

Dont say that !

Spun a bearing maybe  whatever it is it doesn't sound healthy

It does sound poorly.

I am going to have a spiders in the light on the weekend and check the alley cover on the gearbox / flywheel.

Curiously, its only happened since I changed to a campus bottom pulley ?

Sounds like the death rattle :crap:

What would cause it ? why would it start as soon as I change a pulley ? Coincidence ? It only taps really bad at certain revs ..

It knocks as you increase the revs / put the engine under load, classic big end symptoms. Could be purely co-incidental about the campus bottom pully, unless you havent dont the bolt up or something and its flapping around ! Doesnt sound like that though :crap:

Thanks Kris.

I guess Ill have to go out in the light and check for obvious loose bits , and work from there.

Afternoon all.

Today I have mostly been all over the car like a tramp on some hot chips. :D

I took off the front bumper , and removed the bottom flywheel cover. Couldnt help but notice the car had dropped some oil. When I say some , I mean lots.

Went up top and noted that the oil return pipe from turbo to sump had split.

Checked the dipstick to work out roughly how much oil had been lost , and it just measured on the stick !:disagree::sad:

I dropped the remaining oil out into a clean catch vessel , and refilled the engine. I guess a litre at tops oil was in :disagree:

There was zero swarf in the used oil ( I used a very fine strainer ) and the oil was at worst 1000mi old.

I have now refilled the engine with oil and the clattering has gone. Just the usual c1j burble with a side exit.

Have a I goosed anything ? Have I delayed the inevitable ? Am I looking at an engine that is going to die in the next 3 miles ? Could I have gotten away with it ?

You mite of got away with but it defiantly hasn't done it any good that rattle noise is metal on metal with no oil to lubricate did oil pressure light come on or did it get hot ?

andybond

Neither !

I'd be checking if the all the lights on the dash are working too. You don't want that to happen twice!

why not just drop the sump and check the bearings, few hours work for piece of mind...

You may end up causing more damage mate!

id go with ashy advice drop the sump check the big and small bearings be on safe side if you leave it you may fcuk it and then you will be cursing when you have to rebuild bottom end

i would leave it be mate, sounds like a lucky escape to me. guarantee that the sump wont reseal right or one of the sump bolts will sheer off

With you on this one Robbo. Going to leave it well alone.

If it decides to grenade - so be it. Ill chuck another engine in. Never liked this one etc etc .. :scared:

Its been quiet for a while - then bam , its back with a bang ( not literally ! ) now
Oil pressure still good.
I swear its coming from the flywheel / clutch / box tho. I just cant quite pinpoint it.
Could a spring from the clutch be trying to make a bid for freedom ?

Sounds like something metallic sloshing around ...

This is fun.

Been speaking to brigsy - could be a multitude of things. Going to whip out the engine and check flywheel is tight ..

I think its a flywheel bolt trying to make a bid for freedom ..

Have a listen. I can make it knock or not just about on demand.

Its at no1. end.
