1000 doesnt seem to bad, i will have most of the prep done and only the wheels and engine would need covering. the rest can be spayed or oversprayed. the only bit i dont fancy doing is welding in the windcsreen panel.

:)Robbery?
Paintwork is a skill, and all in the prep work, with that comes time/ labour, tbh nearer the 2k or up mark, fair play if you can get it cheaper though,.

agreed you get for what you pay

i wouldnt pay 2k, there is never going to be 2k's worth of work. the car in tungy already, only main rot is windscreen. it doesnt take a genius to get a car prepped, leaving the sprayer to do the finishing touches before the final paint. like i say the car is fully stripped. its a shell.

takes skill to prep a car properly ,, ever car i have had down which is soposed to been so called preped ready to paint has been no where near

i will never get it 100% prepped and i wouldnt even try, but if the car is stripped with the paint keyed then that will save the sprayer at least a day in prep and even more time in masking and tbh i would expect that to save me some money. i will take it to me local booth and see what im quoted. i dont want to go mad as it will still be going on the track.

Are you having the whole car painted, In and out of all panels, shuts etc if so I would be worried about paying only £2000.

just the outside of the car and door shuts.

Tbh it's all in the prep, i put in around 60 hours prep on my car, the painter came in twice to check it then it took him a morning to paint and bake it Even at £25+ vat an hour that's still nearly £1800 plus cost me £300 in materials, ok fair do's it was a change of colour but i didn't do the engine bay. You might think 60 hours is a lot and maybe i didn't know what i was doing and that's why it took so long but i have prepped plenty of cars before and the painter has never had to do any extra. I would expect to pay around £2500 for a good job.

With the front panel welded in I reckon about £2000 for a tidy job.

2k is to much i will scrap it if it gets close and reshell it. its a track car so not getting to carried away.

My current car has a very good shell.

The 3/4 glass areas, tailgate and front screen all need to be repaired and I'm in a fortunate position of having a friend who sprays in his spare time.

He's quoted me a very reasonable amount and it will include me helping prep the car.

I would expect a FULL respray to cost between 1.5 - 2.5k, that being a same colour spray!

As a few have mentioned, the cost is in the preparation.

That will usually reflect in the respray!

You could also put a grand into that with a proper flat and polish if you want a glass finish.

i complety understand the prep is the key :). maybe im after a lesser job as if i spend to much i will be scared of putting it into the wall at the track. only reason its getting painted as the rot was bad in areas so i started working on that and i wanted to stiffen the chassis and cage so i stipped it all to a shell to do it all at once. i will have to think whether its actually worth saving, i didnt want to scrap it but if its going to cost that much then its cheaper to replace.

try your local bodyshop first mate, if you after that type of job theres always someone out there that would do it for cheapo, whether the paint would stay on the whole way round the track is another story;)
Goodluck fella.

prep it, get the dents out then give it a matt black finish..

its meant to look hardcore so the worse the better
:)

car.crash
23-11-2008, 23:46
matt black would look good but it would mean inside and engine bay too. so colour change is out the question.

aii, problem is although you've stripped and done most of the work on it, most places would still prep it themselves so as to make sure the paint adheres correctley, filling defects, using sealers and 2 pac primers,so the new paint doesn't play up etc/ u might have a bloody good shell, but the last thing that shop will want is the hassle of rework, if say a month down the line the paint flakes, blisters etc.:)

i will probably get shot for this
but if you are not after a show car and have an indoors space to
work , did you ever consider roller painting it with some yacht/marine enamel ??
it does not require any special skills as it does not involve spraying and will cost you well under 150-200 quid doing it yourself .

i have not actually done it myself due to lack of space but when i looked into
this a few years back i have seen really good examples of finished jobs done
around the world ,also had a go myself on a few spare spoliers etc (athome)
at the time ,results were pretty good . some people i have seen even managed mirror
finish jobs with extra wet sanding /polishing etc .

just google "painting with a roller" in google if interested :agree: :coffee:

markey b
24-11-2008, 17:31
not at all, 5 is in storage for the 1st time since i've owned it to try and save a bit of money. the bodywork is still mint so it wont need the full works to colour change, just a bit of prep, engine out etc. etc. and it'll have a new lick of paint one day... hopefully as soon as i can claim my bank charges back again lol
