View Full Version : Renault 5 GT Turbo undergoing lots of work :)
I bought this 5 in January after being bored of my S13 200sx. I have owned about 6 Renault 5's in the past, so I knew the 5 wouldn't bore me like the Nissan did..
Anyway.. I bought it from CGB for the very reasonable price of £1300. Runs well.. not had any problems other than it throwing off an alt. belt, but a quick call to the AA got that sorted. I now carry a spare belt wherever I go. A few initial pictures:

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m31/BriC175/RedGTT037.jpg
Note the cracked front bumper and lovely orange paintwork (that should be red). It had a few other nasty little bits, like a rotten tailgate, fooked grille (all broken), dints in the doors, rust on the drivers sill, no speaker covers, Piece of MDF for a parcel shelf..
Time went on, and I bought / fitted a few little bits, as you do.
* Sony CD player and a couple of Infinity 6012i speakers
* Speaker covers
* Parcel shelf
* Polished steering wheel boss
* Stainless steel gauge holder and 3 gauges - Boost pressure, Oil pressure and Water temp.
* New front bumper
* Fitted some 15" Black TSW Stealth's that I bought for my old car a couple of years ago..
* Probably a few other bits I've forgotten about

Looks like a 4wd, but it was mainly for the grip, as the Toyo Proxies on these wheels were much better than the tired, random miss match on the speedlines!
Drove around like this for a while, swapped jobs, and then started saving pennies to get the bodywork sorted. Got the money and booked it in with Dave from SBS Bodystyling (see member Dave-SBS). Bit of a treck away, but he does good work and seems to have experience in painting 5's (he's done a few!).
So off to work my Dad and me get stripping the car to the bone..

On the back of the towing dolly it went, all the way to Carlisle where Dave could work his magic. Now for the bit where some people may cringe.. It's having a full colour change to Peugeot / Citroen 'Bleu Lucia', with a few extra touches such as - smoothed bumpers, rear windscreen wiper / washer deleted, smoothed rear bumper recess (sidey is replacing rear exit).
Anyway - Dave has taken lots of pictures that I will share some of with you..

So yeh.. That's where it is at the moment. I have a few other bits to fit / still to buy for when I get it back.. I have Cobra buckets in White and Black leather, Sparco harnesses, OMP strut brace, Safety Devices 6 point roll cage, T25 Turbo, LC-1, Side exit.. Yet to buy suspension, new wheels, and a few other bits
Hope I haven't bored you with the ridiculous amount of pictures.. But if you want to see my full folder, look here: http://s100.photobucket.com/albums/m31/BriC175/

That looks excellent!
My car is currently in the bodyshop having various bits cut out/welded and I should have it back in the next couple of weeks. :)
Cool Alex. Did you go to that Bolton RR day ages ago, when I put my Campus on the rollers?
I did indeed mate. In fact, on the way home my engine blew up and the cars been off the road ever since! :sad2:

Hehe..
Owning and getting bored of a 200sx only made my love for GT Turbo's stronger, so it had to be done. I've always wanted a paint job. Nice fresh paint of my own choice.. Excellent :D

after going jap and realising that the grass isnt always greener on the other side, the love grew stronger for the 5 also for me
anyways a nice standard looking 5 is a sight to behold these days :)
Cool :) Ultimately I want to have both - Jap and French, but I don't have the funds for that at the moment. We will see how things go in a couple of years. My favourite affordable car is the Skyline R32 GTR, but insurance on them is a joke. I like the RX-7 as well.. Cheaper to insure I have found.. Maybe get one of them along with my Renault when I am around 21. Depends on the situation at the time, but that's my aim.

Looks well mate, keep us updated. I really need to get my arse into gear & get my gtt to dave sbs for the works.
Yeh man.. His high quality of work was what made me go to him.. despite the fact that he is miles away from me :D

Top job Briccles... you've got 'the passion' for these cars so I know it'll end up a minter. :)
Good start, now just keep it up and you'll somit that you'll never get tired of........... well not until the third head gasket anyway lol
Lol Oli.. I've already blown 1 headgasket in my old one, but that wasn't my fault.. honest :scared:
I saw your feature in Performance French Car, and it looks pretty nice! I want your wheels!

And it won't be the last lol
Cheers bud, there only clio 172 cup wheels but don't get em from Renault, they wanted 400quid for just the wheels in silver, no centre caps and no tyres, I got those in that colour, with the centre caps and tyres for 420quid from Ktec
And it won't be the last lol

Yeh. Same as the Trophy wheels. I'm a bit of a wheel whore though.. I have too many as it is. Doubt that will stop me buying more though.
I just bought this today for £150!
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m31/BriC175/19092008227.jpg
It's a Campus - obviously with it being an L reg. MOT till April '09, Alarm with remote central locking, GT Turbo bodykit, Nice rocker cover (painted silver), and a few other bits I've probably forgot about.
Only problem - engines w@nkered and the windscreen surround is rotten. Think the engine issue is the big ends, so the engine from the red campus behind is going in - That's a sweet runner. Going to use the windscreen surround off the red one as well, and get some practice with bodywork :D Then I will be breaking the left overs of the red one.. *None pop out windows, window winders, rust free tailgate, etc coming soon to a classified near you :D*
Dunno about a wheel whore, looks like your a 5 whore
Yeh, that too.. I'm 19 and I've had 8.. since I was 16.
8  I haven't even had 8 including works vans and I'm 24

The shell looks in really good condition, did you find much corrosion anywhere or just in the usuall places?
dave-sbs
10-11-2008, 22:20
Seriously , this is one of the best shells i have worked on .
There were the normal places i.e. around the rear qtr windows were just starting , the rear bumper mounting section and a small bit on the drivers footwell.
The sills had had a small plate on , but apart from that its a superb shell.

05-12-2008, 17:34
whats the score with the paint these days , can you only buy water based paint now?
how does this affect getting a good match between if most of the car is oil based paint ,and especially a pearl ??
dave-sbs
05-12-2008, 18:06
I can only get the waterbased paint now , you should have no problem matching your paint as all colours have been re formulated into non solvent .
As far as i can work out , the biggest losers are those with the flip paints as alot of firms dont seem to get it in water over here

A dash I bought (because mine had some holes in it). Pretty fookin messy! You can't see it really, but it has quite a bit of over spray on it, however I sorted the most of that today and I'll take some piccies tomorrow when I fit it.
bric, have you thought about flocking the dash before you fit it.? i think it'd look kinda swish:cool:
Thought about it, but I don't think I will. If I decide I want to, I have a very clean campus dash I may do it with :)

After a good clean. Note the leatherette is damaged along the edge. It looks like it was damaged whilst removing a windscreen. Still, not very easily noticed, and will be less noticeable with the windscreen / seals in.
Won't be able to do anything next weekend, but will the weekend after, so stay tuned kids!
good work:agree: you made that look easy.

I thought you would have at least gave the engine a degrease and a lick of paint to freshen it up.?
:agree: Come on Bric, don't put a skanky engine in that beautifully painted body!
Yeh - decided I will spray the block, rocker cover, and other stuff. Going to get a few bits powder coated. Spent today taking off the subframe etc - Pictures to come.. just uploading them.
OK - So.. Decided I want to be more thorough when rebuilding. I was just gonna throw it all in, as it was before, but I decided I'd get some stuff cleaned up / repainted.
Before:

Hole in the sill! Looks like my Dad will be using his MIG soon :D
My cars new home - the tent was trying to take off with the wind, and has damaged the paintwork on the gutter plastics. Not too big a deal.. I'll just get some sprayed up at some point :)

Seriously dude......hows your car coming along?
It's supposed to be a rose colour (like the wine..), but it's basically a goldy pink.

in your picture the one on the left goes on the passenger side. (top of damper should be more towards windscreen than the radiator)
How much did the coating cost? I'm looking at geting a load of stuff done.

Cheers Andy - I went and checked against an unpainted Zinc spare one I have, and I can see which one is which. The zinc one is nearside, right?
It was £40 for shotblasting and coating.

Sorted - N is for nearside

yeah please mate what colour did u go for is it black ?? whens the car goin to be finished then ???:)
So today, I made two new purchases..
One being a carb :D
The other.. another GTT
The GTT is to replace my daily driver campus:
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m31/BriC175/10052009418.jpg
So, here's some pics of the new one, after a quick wash:

Does anyone want a GT Tuning twin dump valve set up? :coffee:
One with my uncles award winning freshly restored camper:
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m31/BriC175/23052009473.jpg
Started T-Cutting it on the bonnet. You can't really see it very well, but in this pic you can see closest to the camera where I have T-Cutted a bit, and past that where it is cloudy (almost looks dirty, but this was done post wash, so it was clean!). Comes up alright, and I will eventually get the whole car done.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m31/BriC175/23052009475.jpg
Picked it up today from member 'B4NK51E' in Birmingham. We then took a de-tour to Redditch to pick up the carb I bought, so all in all, the GTT survived a 2.5 hour journey with no problems.
Plan is - it won't be on the road for another couple of months, and when it is on the road, it will be my daily driver to replace the campus. I will be keeping it standard ish, as it is, but repairing little bits and bobs, i.e. having the grille re-sprayed :D
yeah please mate what colour did u go for is it black ?? whens the car goin to be finished then ???:)

looks a nice straight clean car man. With regards to t-cut , throw it in the bin, theres much better products out there now days, t-cut is just all about the branding, jump on detailing world forum and find a reccomended cutting compound polish, and if the cars got swirls give it a going over with somthing like Auto Glym Super Resin after, as its got a filler in the polish that will remove swirls.

Haha, a lot of my money goes on insurance mate.. just a lot of saving / borrowing off the parents! Everything I've bought for this GTT I'm restoring I haven't borrowed, but I think I might have to borrow some to insure this GTT I've just bought.

Yeh mate, will do when I get it insured.. not sure when that'll be though. How's yours coming along?
getting there slowly just money mate and time as i work all week , so its only weekends that i get on it :)
Insured on the Red GTT now - good to have boost back in my life :D
Looking excellent  ...I still wonder powder painting price (even it includes sandblasting).
I took my wheels to sand blasting (cost 10€), then powder coating 40€ (all wheels) and that includes black coating plus shiny powder lack. Reason why I wonder is simple...in Finland usually everything is very expensive.
If you have pics when you instal wires, please send pics for me.

Most of the big jobs are done now, just got to tie up all the loose ends and she should be done :D
So.. My role at the company I work at is being made redundant, however I have found a job working for the same company in the Leeds office, so I needed a comfier, more economical, and safer car for the 100 mile a day journey
So I went out and bought this:

More pics to follow. Fecking awesome car to 'cruise' around in. It's not the fastest thing, but it's not too bad, and it's ridiculously comfy and quiet.

Just looked through your pics mate got to say you've done an amazing job the car is looking really good. Ive just spent ages doing my engine and was going to do the body at some point. how long has your project took you in all and do you know roughly how much its all cost? Got to say you had a right bargain with your powder coated parts.
Keep up the good work and looking forward to looking at more pics soon :)

Winter weather, new cars, work on new cars, general laziness put a hold on it for all this time :crap:

I know what you mean, i've been doing some work on, was going to put up a project thread but decided I didn't want everybody to know how slowly it's been going
hopefully now the weather is getting better  things will start moving again
Looks fantastic mate!
Keep up the good work =]
Thought I'd add some pictures of her in her current state. Hopefully gonna get the interior in this weekend :)

Mouldy steering wheel :D It had a leak, which is sorted now.

Some rust around the drivers side rear arch. Luckily it is where the plastic arch sits, so repair work will be covered. That will obviously be done soon! Just waiting on my dad to buy a new mig welder.

looking good gayboy! thought you'd forgotten about it and left it to rot :cooter:
Did a few things today.. mostly sorting out the electrics so I can put the interior in.
Wired up my gauges as well, but used a taillight connector block to make it neater / easily removable:

Should have the interior back in by the end of the weekend, then it will pretty much be ready for an MOT.
By the way - does anyone know what these two wires are for?

Could be wrong but I they look to me like the wires that connect to the instrument display brightness control just to the right below the steering wheel

No there blue and a grey wire with spade connectors for the dim controller, I would say these apart of an old alarm just ignore them
I thought it could be that James..
I guess it's nothing you've seen before then?
Cheers :)

I was doing jrp's dash the other night and he had the same grey wire with the round female connector and it has no connections to connect with I therefore just ignored it, i have seen it in the past on a few of my old 5s and have had no problems with ignoring it.
Project looks fantastic Bric love it, you planning on having her ready for mallory this year?
getting there mate , i am just lazy also mines just sat in a garage under a sheet sleeping ,money is my big problem:)
Just read through all of this, looks quality bric :agree:
James - yeh mate.. Planning on getting it MOT'd ASAP. Just doing the bare minimum really to get it through the mot. Gonna leave the skirts and arches off, and I don't think I'll put much of the interior in yet. I'll do all that once it's road legal.. Should give me more motivation.
Matt - tell me about it. Money is my issue at the mo as well. Things are begining to look brighter money wise though :)
Sphinx - cheers mate :D
Exhaust - fitted
Leaky coolant hoses - fixed
Should be in for an MOT soon :D Just needs seats / seatbelts and a bit of welding.
OK - did some welding with my Dad today.

i dont no wot these wires are for but i can confirm they are oe but not used by the gtt, the dash wiring loom is probably a generic part for all r5s and these wires are prob used by another version ov the r5, prob campus with power steering or automatic transmission etc.. ;)

Got any more pictures? This looks like an awesome build! are you planning on keeping it for a long time when its done? or will you end up selling it for something silly like an M5?

The marks on the side skirts that you can see are just from the paper they were stored in. They had been left outside, and the paper had stuck and dried to the skirts - it'll wash off :)
Looks like a car again :D
It's sitting very high at the moment, but uprated suspension to come, when funds allow!
That looks quality mate!! :agree: I want those rims
Ready for an MOT now! Not 100% finished, as can be seen, but just a few finishing touches and she's done.
Going to book it in for an MOT this Saturday. Insured on it already, so if it passes, I'll get some tax, and I'll be out in this GT Turbo for the first time in 2 years!

She needs lowering - Konis are next on the list... but a holiday, and insurance coming up means it will probably be a few months. Might just get some springs in the meantime

Your suggesting that I joined up just for this purpose? hardly helped me either... more hindered me! and when its finished ill probably post some pics up and mention that a mate helped me fit them. I'm nice like that!
anyway quit your jibber jabbin and get it booked in for its MOT!
Passed it's MOT with no advisories
Really happy. Been out driving it all day :D She handles great - really sharp. I imagine the polybushed subframe helped.

Yeh it's OE ridehight. Will be lowered at some point :)
Still got the spoiler and badges to fit
Congratulations dude:agree:
All that hard work paying off - good for you...................yet another 5 that'd be good to see in the flesh.............
It looks grea buddy, I love the colour and how you've kept it simple, as James5 said needs lowering:agree:
Only one thing, that colour kind of makes the sides look abit plain, have you thought about a factory set of side decals?

It does indeed need lowering!
I have actually.. I thought some black style graphics, like I had on my old ph.1 would look good. Pic:

I'm not sure I'd like them as solid as that - maybe more so it fades out.
Did you get my PM btw Oli?
what about a set of ph1 side graphics with the red strip removed?
Yeah just got it
Hm... I like the idea of that...
How much would they cost I wonder? I'll have to call in to Renault at some point :)

They aint cheap, was 200quid when I bought mine but they have gone up since, your best bet would be to find someone who can copy them
Probably. I'll give it a think anyway... next thing on my list is a new alarm (and these springs I'm buying off you) :)
looks really nice that does mate, and the paint looks cool in the sun.. definatly wants lowering , also what offset are the wheels as they appera they may not slip straight under the aches to easilly.
Bit of an update.
Won some seats on eBay for £60. Took a bit of a risk, as I hadn't seen them, and the description was a bit brief, but they turned out to be pretty good! They are standard GT Turbo seats, but retrimmed in blue leather. Main problem was, they were in pembrokeshire, which is a 4.5 hour drive each way , so I went and got them in the BMW last weekend.
Basically changed them as I've gone off the buckets that were in it. Back when I started this project, the plan was to have it stripped and caged, but my ideas have changed, and I want it a more OE+ look.
Anyway - took a few pics. Not very good ones.. just took them on my iphone.

Yeh I much prefer them tbh
Had a go at lowering it today.
Drivers side torsion bar came out nice and easily, but the passenger side, not so much
Got it out eventually though, and lowered it ~40mm. Think I went too low though. It's catching the arch cover on the drivers side (it's lower on the drivers side), and the passenger side will probably catch with people in the rear.
So next weekends job is to take them out again, raise it probably ~10mm, and get it level as well. Not bothered about raising it, as it's probably a bit too low at the rear for my liking anyway.
Pictures (sorry they're crap - iphone quality and poor light):

Yes I know my numberplate is wonkey, and knackered... I have a new pair waiting to be fitted!
I don't think it needs decals. Looks well as is. OE spoiler, clear fogs and for me raider seats and OE steering wheel would be how I'd go.
Those wheels are absolutely top too. :agree:
