as above, bought it last year off of a fellow member on here, anyways, wanted to restore and
tune it up and just make it a nice, fairly standard exterior, will be adding pics of whats what and how its going.

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:33
so its started, lol pulled it apart and found some horrors along the way; some poorly fitted alarm. so outed that, sills on the outside were knackered along with a touch of inner and p/j/point, had these donr all pukka now, and started on the inside tidying it up

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:36
out with the screen to find if anything was rotten again and to my surprise it werent bad, starting pitting so got to it in time, and the inside was ready for primer, looks a bit better:)

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:40
then made a start with the outside, bodywork was pretty much much a1, just had a light crease like mark on passenger side above wheel arch. odd but then my mate had one which did the same but on the other side:scratch:

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:42
so got it all prepped ready for a bit of primer, all good so far:)

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:44
in primer, so now left it a couple of weeks, nothing worse than having it creep bk in places flatted thru,

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:47
got a set of these along with centres and key, a bit ropey tho:dearme: so sending those off to be refurbed propperly

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:50
next. pulling the engine out, never done mechanics really b4, so monkey see monkey do as they say:laugh:

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:53
missing a few pics of the engine bay etc, so straight up to the paint side of things again, werent missing much anyway, lol so i borrowed the booth from me gaffer for the weekend and set about it,

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:55
smoothed the rear bumper as its running side exit, and just tidyed up minor cracks ,chips, etc

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 19:59
more and more bits......... so many to do,lol

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 20:00
oh yeah, bought brand spanking new wings and bonnet as the others were just agg with rot. aqquireda tailgate as that was rotten also and deleted the wiper and washer jet holes

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 20:05
and more, i was wondering weather to change the colour a while bk back and asked to peeps views, i did the right thing and kept it 449, but as my sister and her partner run a paint company i fort id add my own twist with the pearl side of it, im not easily pleased with so mamy a trip on weekends making new formulations to get it right, and its in my opinion just right the way it flipps,;)

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 20:08
engine bay done and smoothed out some holes which wont be needed anymore, all good so far:) next the shell and doors

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 20:10
went well, im happy with it, just a nice flat and pollish to really get smooth finish, bearly any peal on it but its just me:coffee:lol

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 20:13
and more, the doors were already de locked but in certain light u could the shink marks around where the locks were!! annoys me, if u cant do bodywork, leave to people who know what there doing please, it wont bite u in the arse in 2 months time:disagree:

TOMTOM
29-01-2012, 20:16

Gttnutter
01-02-2012, 01:09
Yeah my best 5 i've owned...and the quickest too...that engine loved full chat @ 23 psi... I remember when i had marks afr linked up for a few weeks to scope the engine. the day we put it on i ran up a duel carrige way with mark screaming at me saying "dont change upto 5th keep going..keep going" Theres me in 4th at 6500rpm...that went to around 7000rpm that did...ok the cam engine carb handled it perfectly but as mark will vouch here...i drove it like a granny 80% of the time !

g10far
01-02-2012, 09:45
Great work there! This looks awesome, its so cool to see all these 5's being resto'd back up. Keep it up! :agree:

23-04-2012, 19:02
Little update, got pretty much all parts for the engine build now, pistons, liners, water pump, oil pump refurb kit, all gaskets, mains, high output starter and alternator, head skimmed and oil gallery now done, wideband kit, full sfs kit in blue:) carb service kit, clutch kit, crank pollished, block etc painted up all nice, all service bits and bobs, cost a pretty penny so far:cry: lol, anyways it's off next week to mr Metz to work his magic and I can't wait now as it's nearly there:D I'll update on progress on how things go. Still debating on weather to put a cage in it, bolt in pref as I've painted the inside. Don't want to be welding.lol it's being done for say fast road and prob the odd track event at a show. What u reakon fellas? if not I'll source new door cards etc for factory-ish look.lol:)

Trevhib
23-04-2012, 19:35
Forget a cage, factory ftw. And if you can't get mint door cards, have Phoenix flock some duff ones :agree:

Don't forget new headlights, grille badge, tow eye cover, Raider rear window sticker and door badges for the outside!

Brigsy
23-04-2012, 19:38
Looks mint :agree:

TOMTOM
23-04-2012, 21:07
Headlights are good, tow eye I've got, raider badge already in window and as for the raider badges on the doors, I'll have a pair when people stop dreaming stupid prices for them, it's a joke that people will cash in on these things. I ain't paying £40+ no way, rather it go in me tank, lol

Gttnutter
23-04-2012, 22:22
You've done her well tom. did i not give you the tow eye cover i had?

sounds like the engine took a punch...pistons\liners etc. the rad i replaced with a new valeo one so i'd of thought that would of been ok to still use??

I replaced the waterpump pistons+rings+shells with the rebuild.

Gotto keep it more oe... might dsound weird but if i were to have a cage i'd prefer it the colour of the car i reckon.

TOMTOM
24-04-2012, 17:52
That rad was tested and the flow rate was down 20%, and I thought, oh.lol anyways, got oil cooler,so will be replacing with an alloy item now, everything is new, anything let's go or dosnt perform how it should will be going bk, ( over there heads):D bet u fort when it went, I wonder what's really gona happen to it,lol na u didn't thrown in the tow eye also!! Still got it?:)

Bigfoot
24-04-2012, 17:58
I keep putting my Raider badges on eBay, a lot closer to original compared to what Bob is trying to sell. Speak to Mike on here as he got a couple of sets off me, only problem is that I have 1 set left and a spare, so wont be putting them back on eBay as nobody wants them for a few months even though I keep getting watchers. I will get another batch made up if I get the demand but I see no need to do so really.

Nothing quite like putting lots of brand new items on a car :)

Be good to see it out on the road round this way :agree:

Ricardo
24-04-2012, 19:25
SO much WANT for this car, i need a Raider in my life and the ONLY 5 'd have... ish :D  :agree:

looks epic, well done fella.

TOMTOM
24-06-2012, 11:25
Hey matt, I got them thru a motor store round the corner from me, I could get them cheaper from them than sfs direct, there pretty much the same as samco hoses, ie the bleed nipples are the same, I paid 650 for a complete kit. Still mega for some pipes but sfs wanted 688 with the discount.lol wont be using them again I know that.:crap: hope it helps.:)

TOMTOM
29-06-2012, 17:56

I picked up a raider at the weekend - engine bay looks very similar and bodywork much the same - got some dodgy wheels on it though but did come with the original wheels, Ive got 285mm discs on it though so think ill have to just sell them on

Yours does look very well finished - youve got a few things I need! A grill being one of them. Mine came with a new Campus grill though so Ive dropped that off today to be painted.

I think Ill have to do a progress thread too - bodywork is A1 but engine needs lots of TLC - sounds like a bag of spanners at the moment!

Who sorted your engine? A friend or a Garage?

TOMTOM
27-03-2013, 19:40
Hello, my mate Jon Metz at torsion tuning, no longer going but the man is truely awesome at what he does, was at the forefront of 5s 10 years ago, he knows his stuff, start a thread up dude, will be great to see another 5 getting love :) and thanks for the comments guys!!

TOMTOM
24-04-2013, 21:00
Little update on mine as I've not bothered lately.lol had the front screen out as a useless window man didn't fit it well at all, so had a new seal put it, from a ford transit, not original bit looks nice and dosnt mist up now!! New discs with wheel bearings standard rear and brembo grooved front, bf good ridge brake lines, wideband to be fitted also, head unit and speakers finally.lol next up, to see Jon to setup the turbo and fuelling, then rolling road to see what it's doing, power wise and a 4gas printout to be certain. And Will be for sale soon.
