I have always liked the Green Cotton powerflow filters epsecially the oversized jobbies :agree: the ones that would fit a cossie

itg maxogen conical filter:cool:

when last at rolling road ,did power run with the filter in place
then a power run without filter in place made just less than half a hp difference mid range showed was identical and full chat was half a horsepower down, might not mean much but i was surprised how un restrictive it was:laugh:

Those cossie filter trumpets might INCREASE it a tiny bit?? That's what trumpets do isn't it?

Anyway, I and a couple of pals tried one once, a green filter but I presume the same trumpet, compared with a big Piper cross. Was on a standard 1.4 turbo in maybe a R11.

We just drove around the block a couple of times and swapped the filter a few times. the car seemed to go a bit better with the cossie trumpet green thing.

The cossie thing also sounded different, louder. That's also what trumpets do I guess.

That slight pre-compression of the air being sucked into the turbo, maybe that did have an effect.

I did another experiment at another time. Had the standard cannister fitted. Tried it with the canister filter lid off, no paper filter, added the k&n replacement. Result was that a harshness at about 5000rpm was less or gone with no filter, next was the k&n introducing a slight harshness. Adding the lid didn't seem to have much effect, IIRC.

A pals car with the cossie filter (and a bit of head work and maybe at the time a different cam) was quite a bit smoother than mine as the rpm sailed around to 7500.

These things might be more of a perceptual pleasure than a real speed change. I just well cleaned the cone filter on the Fiat, no turbo, 60bhp. Also took the bit of gaffer tape off that someone put there. I did seem to feel a slight improvement in some areas. Not going to drop the 0 to 60 time or anything, but did feel a tiny bit better.

My feeling is that if you can discern those things and they matter to you then there can be something worthwhile to be had from choosing a better air filter.

I also felt I got a slight improvement when moving off from stationary and moving onto roundabouts at slow speed when I dropped a Broquet fuel catalyst into the fuel tanks baffled area around the uptake. Again this will be a thing that a lot of people who cannot tell small differences will swear there is not one to tell. I think the fault is with them rather than those who can tell are imagining it. Is it worth the £60 though. That depends how well heeled you are. With the Fiat I see people in this naturally aspirated world spending more for less.
