Hi guys, though I'd post some pics up of my R5 gtt.
Had it for nearly a year now and its been through a minor transformation compared to some on here, but proud to say I have carried out all the work myself (with some direction from a few local members) and I'm starting to be happy with it.
Started off buying it for £700 down in Kent, rear was all in primer and had been left in the rain for weeks, few shiny bits under the bonnet and a tatty interior. Odd wheels with shockingly bad tyres, near to destroyed T2 turbo running high boost but it still drove okish, for £700 i didnt expect much more and was on a budget. Took it back to Essex and thats where its been living for the last year. Since then I've changed nearly everything that was on the car, as the pics will show.
Drove it for a few months in the summer but took it off the road in autumn to continue the project onto the next level.
Will upload more pics but here is a before - reasonably current couple of pics.

The Pics with the white Turbine wheels were taken in December I think, since then Its been through 3 sets of suspension and I finally settled on some Gaz coilovers, so its sitting lower now :)
Will post some more pics when i transfer them from my old computer. Will also update this thread over next few weeks when I finally get round to getting the engine out for a 285 cam, new uprated clutch and gearbox to go in.

Yeh I agree, its better than the old aftermarket grille I got it with but it needs to go. Contacted Mike at gtspares other week so might have to get a gtt one off him, been searching for a while and its starting to annoy me looking at it everyday.

Fast road/Trackday project

Yeh think it was on its way to the scrapyard before I saved it :)

Old ruined T2, new T25

Relocated pipercross induction kit with ali pipe and red joiners, low temp thermostat (as it was completely missing), low temp fan switch, oil catch tank

Phil r turbo
29-01-2012, 16:42
Grommets put in so the header pipes dont split, picked up some spax adjustables from a breaker, but took old apex kit of and swapped for local members Gaz coilovers in the end. The anti perc fan connector met the turbo so cut it off

Phil r turbo
29-01-2012, 16:46
White turbines on, made up some new plates at work just for while its on the drive, current engine bay pic.
Using old T2 turbo as a door stop atm

Phil r turbo
29-01-2012, 16:54
Picked up a Pink Louvered badboy bonnet few weeks ago, been sanding/fillering the crap outta it and finally got it in primer this week. Thought id trial fit it incase i didnt like it.
(puncture on offside front tyre is why its sitting on the lop)

Let me know what you think guys, your opinions are always useful :)

Phil r turbo
29-01-2012, 17:00
Thanks dale, those wipers must have given it an extra 5bhp :D haha
I recognize some of the parts in the bay that Ive removed, but i dont know what happened to it bodywork between me and you owning it, definitely went downhill abit :crap:
But at least its still alive!

Bigfoot
29-01-2012, 17:29
At least 5bhp :wasntme: there was a dent in the OS rear quarter which you can just make out, that was thanx to a bloke hitting it on a night out, and the rear arch done same night by one of their friends kicking it  was not happy to say the least. I think somebody must have removed the turbo which was on there as no way was that the turbo which I did have. Just noticed the fiesta in the background, sold the 5 to drive that to and from work, worse mistake ever but couldn't let the 5 drive 1.5miles to work every day, was not doing it any good.

Andyturbo!
29-01-2012, 17:37
It's looking awesome and purposeful mate, where did you get your intercooler and rad? Of you don't mind me asking. Also see your using ash hoses, was thinking of using them myself, how's the quality?

Phil r turbo
29-01-2012, 18:38
Yeh I couldnt put it through driving to work straight onto 8miles of dual carriageway everyday, so been using my 205gti as my daily.

Thanks mate, got the rad from a local member, thinks its john - ex torsion tuning mechanic? got the newest intercooler from ebay just a universal £60 job, can find the size if need be.
Theyre not bad actually, I was trying to stick to all sfs hoses like my coolant set but the budget stepped in, they have quite a good wall which doesnt split/tear easily and bend a little if you need abit more of an angle. The reducer hose on the top corner of the pic isnt an ash hose, it has some kind of nasty plack rubbery lining inside that grips to boost pipes, very unforgiving and dont like it at all :crap: attaches to the turbo

Andyturbo!

That's great pal thanks for the info :agree:

Quick update, ordered a piper 285 cam kit last weekend and a few other gasket goodies. Started it up in the snow yesterday and it loved it, last time I'll start it till the engines back in probably, will make a start on that this weekend :)
Plans for feb/march
Engine out for new gearbox, uprated clutch, 285cam, new chain/tensioner, uprated headgasket with tensile bolts, new carb gasket set, helicoil no.1 cylinder spark plug.
Should keep me busy for a while.

Phil r turbo
08-02-2012, 19:35

Piper 285 Cam, vernier pulley, uprated springs, lube, timing disc, and a load of stickers, think Ill get started this weekend.

Decided to start on removing the engine today, first time on a 5. Few hours of cold fingers and a macdonalds later and its hanging in by the mounts ready to take out tomorrow - Depending how hungover I am :crap:
Had a garage clearout only to have my mate leave an rs turbo bonnet in it for abit of prep work tomorrow. Engines gona be living in there for a couple of weeks, headgasket, cam, cluctch and gearbox ready to play with.
Few pic updates
Cat was helping by being in the way as usual

Got the engine out today, even after going out last night and crawling into bed at 4am after steaming through a minefield of drinks (including 6 bottles of champagne ) after finding out I was probably still pissed I decided to get on with the 5.
Was waiting around for my mate till he got up at 4pm so I could borrow his engine crane and still got it out before it got dark. No problems at all :D

Pic updates

12-02-2012, 22:29
Thanks for the support guys!:agree:
I know working outside in minus temperatures isn't ideal but I love it, everyones moaning about walking around town in the cold - look what i did today!:D
the 7inches of snow has almost gone now so thought i'd crack on

Phil r turbo
16-02-2012, 20:33
Another little update, been doing an couple hours work this week after work on the engine.
Cam cover off, gearbox off, clutch off, turbo off, carb off, head off.
New clutch is on and lined up, just need to paint new gearbox and thatll go on.
Cam will probably be out tomorrow:coffee:
Carb has had a fresh new gasket set
Enlarged Turbo elbow fitted
Head needs No.4 spark plug Helicoiling as some previous no-brain "mechanic" has mashed it up so thatll be a quick trip to the local machinist's for a discount service ;) always helps to be in the industry
Uprated headgasket and headbolts arrived the other day, new chain and tensioner also ready to go on with a few other goodies.

Phil r turbo
16-02-2012, 20:36
few more pics of progress this week

good progress

Phil r turbo
17-02-2012, 22:19
Wasn't gonna spend any time on the engine tonight but got bored :p
Got the head sorted out, fresh plugs in, looks like there was already and uprated head gasket on.
Sprayed G'box with primer.
Got the cam out.
Will take it into work tomorrow and use the de-greaser and put new valve springs in if Ive got time.

Need abit of advice now guys, took a pic of the cam/crank timing marks and they didn't line up. Is it just me or is that quite out? They're supposed to point at each other in a line with the crank and cam center aren't they???
Looks like someones had a fiddle with it before or timings abit off? It ran fine when it was in the car.
Also whats the best way to set a piper 285cam up with a vernier pulley in relation to cam&crank timing and retarding ignition???

Phil r turbo
19-02-2012, 19:41
Took advantage of the good weather today and got on with some spraying.
Gearbox fully primered
Head, water pump and manifolds covered with heat temp paint
Inlet plates and hose holders sprayed

Phil r turbo
19-02-2012, 19:43
More progress today
Engine Bay Primered :D

Phil r turbo
19-02-2012, 19:44
Have Primered the rest of the front panel and cross member, pic was taken halfway through.

Phil r turbo
24-02-2012, 20:18
Pulled the valves out at work this week and needed new valve stem oils seals. They turned up today with a new dti gauge. Cam should be in this weekend and head back together...Finally

24-02-2012, 22:39
Thanks for the support mate. Got plenty more planned for it next month ;)

Phil r turbo
25-02-2012, 19:55
Popped into work with my head today, fitted new valve stem oil seals and uprated piper valve springs. Picked up a courtesy car for a course I'm going on next week so wont be making any progress on the 5, but got a nice Golf TSi for a week
Got the new cam and vernier pulley in aswell, roughly timed up but will be adjusting the pulley when the heads back on. New chain and tensioner on aswell.
Head should be going back on tomorrow :D

Phil r turbo
08-03-2012, 18:54
Quick update
Heads back on, torqued up nicely :)
Valve clearances done,
Dizzy back on,
Timing sorted out,
Heatwrapped manifold and downpipe, evil stuff.

Just gotta finish painting the engine bay (Colour suggestions would be nice, cars going to be sprayed black in the summer) and lacquer the gearbox and its ready to go back in, probably next weekend!

Phil r turbo
13-03-2012, 13:29
Bit more progress on the 5 last weekend.
Engine bay is now gloss black and engine is ready to go back in after I swap the old gearbox mount over. Might be going back in this weekend depending on weather. Got some new 1/2 leather seats for the 205gti and went out for a blast in the sun but can't wait to get the R5 out this summer!
Drivers side has had the jacking point removed and a plate welded into the footwell as it was rotten, new sills are on the cards soon :crap:
Will get some pics up soon.

Phil r turbo
13-03-2012, 18:03
Few Pics

Phil r turbo
13-03-2012, 18:06
Few Pics of welding, on top and from underneath.
Ditched the jacking point, might leave them for now and get some when ive got the spare cash, never jacked on them anyways!
Also got new 205gti seats in

Phil r turbo
13-03-2012, 18:23
Few more pics of bay and jacking point cut out.
Someones been naughty and tried to weld up the rust before, lots of old welding wire needles left rusted to some of the metal. Who tries to weld over rust?!

New GTT grille turned up today, can finally ditch the campus one!

Phil r turbo
17-03-2012, 18:53
As today was a washout thought I'd stop being lazy and get the engine ready.
Painted box bolted on, slotted on a treat.
Turbo quickly wire brushed and back on.
Carb back on with new gaskets.

Thought about putting it back in tomorrow but then noticed when swapping the old gearbox mount over it was hanging off, rubber is knackered so need a new one, maybe next weekend:coffee:

will be welding plates into the footwells over next couple of weeks and doing sills next month, dont fancy "Flintstoning" around when its back on the road.

Phil r turbo
21-03-2012, 19:16
Engine nearly ready to go back in, new mounts arrived today so should be dropping it back in this weekend.

Phil r turbo
24-03-2012, 18:28
Got final coats of lacquer on the engine bay today, nice enough day for it.
New engine mounts fitted, rocker and chain cover back on with new gaskets.
All ready to drop back in tomorrow, if I'm not too hungover :D

chris
24-03-2012, 19:46
Wats it turned out like mate you hot any pictures

Phil r turbo
25-03-2012, 17:32
Will get some pics up later mate.
Dropped the engine back in today, few things plumbed in, rad in, intercooler on, oil cooler on, alternator on, etc

Phil r turbo
18-04-2012, 21:18
Been abit distracted from the 5 for a few weeks now since I bought a redtop nova :smokin:
Solid white shell thats been strengthened for the redtop and a sound engine, decided not to keep it but it will be living with a close friend so will still see lots of it as it progresses from sleeper to track weapon, already been challenged to a race when the 5s back on the road.

Decided to pull my finger out this weekend and get it running, only got to fit hoses, replace fluids and cross my fingers when i turn the key.
Few pic updates.

Phil r turbo
25-04-2012, 21:01
Didnt get it running because Ive lost the square adapter for the sump plug
So ive ordered a new one, in the meantime got all the hoses back on, gearbox oil in, driveshafts on, all ready to go after the oil change.
Think the red and chrome go really well with the black bay.

tubbyG
25-04-2012, 21:23
looking very nice bud :agree:

I had the same issue with the sump plug, so I modded an old socket extension with an angle grinder - worked a treat:laugh:

Phil r turbo
02-05-2012, 13:29
Haha I was thinking the same thing, but ended up buying a bit for it, hopefully won't loose this one!
Got it running and got a few teething problems,
1. Vernier pulley was knocking on chain cover, even with a thick cork gasket. Easily fixed with a hammer!
2. Dodgy no4 spark plug hole is blowing, low compression in cylinder 4, needs heli coiling ideally.
3. Abit of sh*t coming outa the exhaust, (hopefully cause by no4 cylinder) will double check new valve stem oil seals are ok just incase.

Pics up soon

Bigfoot
02-05-2012, 13:45
2. Dodgy no4 spark plug hole is blowing, low compression in cylinder 4, needs heli coiling ideally.

Wonder if it still has the same head as I had with it, had to have that heli coiled

Phil r turbo
04-05-2012, 13:49
Might well be, I know heli coils aren't invincible, don't understand why so many people have a problem fitting that plug at no.4, I've fitted plugs to worse places thanthat and not done the thread in.:crap:
Ah well gotta push on with it, cracking out the timing gun this weekend, hopefully the rain will stop!

Phil r turbo
25-05-2012, 12:53
Quick update, ordered 2 new sills that should be going on this next month. £40 per side, can't wait to get them on so it's solid.
