silly reply i know but have you checked the tappets gaps and iirc i think you have to check the gaps whilst the engines warm.

C1J needs to be cold to set tappets

They do sound a little bit tappety anyway just the nature of a pushrod.

oh :ashamed:, other than that i wouldnt know what to advise really, havent touched a c1j in over two years now.
the 285 cam tends to make the c1j engine a little more tappy, unless it's really bad i wouldn't worry about it;) (although i have in the past:wasntme:)
just make sure they are set with the engine stone cold I.E overnight to whatever it says in the haynes manual
Que the blue and green manual debate:laugh:
Yeah set them when it was cold.. To. I think 0.20mm isit? Sure i got it off a article on here.. Il post of vid on youtube see what you think?

I'm an idiot and had been setting my 285 for years from cold and they where still really noisy, plenty of people told me not to worry the 285 is noisy. Wasn't until I was really getting jarred off with it to find out I had been using the wrong sized gauges to set the tappets. The numbers where worn and hard to read and I'd been setting at .22mm instead of something like 0.022 inches or something like that.
Just a thought.
Good point that mate il check see what iv been using sure iv used the right one though

Vid link.. What you think? Need adjusting or?
Are you sure it's the tappets and not the manifold gasket? Just a thought they can be really noisy when not right.
Manifold gasket does make a tappy kind of sound, but I don't think that's your noise.
I always seem to remember when ever I have taken vids on my phone the tappets always sounded louder than they actually were. I admit it does sound tappy l, but not overly bad, difficult to tell from the vid alone.
They do tend to quieten down a little bit with use after a new cam also.
Only real thing to do is make sure everthing else is as it should be (oil pressure/coolant temps) then drive it and see how you get on.

It;s a load of old bollocks regarding the 285 cams being more noisy! Yes there is a slighly nore aggressive peak, but the valve train should not sound like a load of loose nuts and bolts rattling around in an empty tin!
It's more likekely worn tappets assemble, ie concave followers, worn rocker shafts and worn /dished rocker tips. Even the adjuster nut tip becomes worn.
I would try and ascertain which rockers / tappets are noisy and inspect for wear. If your lucky, your 285 cam will only be margianally damaged.
I found 2 causes of noisy tappers with my cammed c1j
1. The rocker shaft on a engine I bought had been foisted wrong, namely it had been turned so the oil channels weren't lining up.
2. Old worn tappets, if it's really loud it's time to change em
Cheers for the info guys, il re check that i have set them right which im
Sure i have then if not il go about replacing the tappets etc
Nice one:agree:

sounds like a diesel!...i had a hot cam in one of these engines before and instead of 8 and 10 thou cold it was suppose to be 10 and 16thou!!i always use a tapered feeler guage as the top of the valve wears a slot into the tappet!!

How do you assess worn tappets etc? Mine is tappetty as fook, and I would love it a bit quieter. That said, it is funny as when you set off from parked up after sounding like an old bag of spanners to a glorious super tuned monster:D
Sorted it now guys! Me being a fool was looking t 0.20 inches instead of 0.20 mm sounds sweet now :D
