fitting ignition barrel / steering lock

ive just been told i need to fit a steering lock on my 5 as it has switches fitted (befor i got it) and ignition barrel removed ,

so i need to fit steering lock and ignition barrel,

ive bought this off ebay,

is the steering lock connected to the barrel ?

doaes anyone know if i need much else , nuts / bolts etc
an exploded view would help alot with part numbers etc if anyone has one.
i should be ok with the wires.

i guess ill need a Ignition Barrel Snap Bolt ?

Nice one that does help plus i need to replace a couple of ball joints on that pic :agree:.

just have to wait now till it arrives see what i need to do ,
ive no idea how the steering lock works so if any one has fitted one before tips welcome :)

You need to turn the key to roughly position 3 untill you can push the locating pins in. Slide it into the barrell and it will click into place. The wires are plug and play. Will need to add a small grub screw as shown in the diagram. Really simple job. You may need to lower the colum so undo the 13mm nuts top and bottom and it will drop down.

there are no plugs on mine as they have been cut off by previous owner to fit switch start , so may have to cut new plugs off and join the wires up myself :crap: ,
unless someone has the plug off the dash loom ?

Would it not be better to get some decent electrical connectors from a wholesaler to ensure a decent joint?

best option would be to solder the joints and seal them with heat shrink tubing ;)

if you look on the barrel facing there is a postion marked 'A' thats were you position the barrel to release the locking pins;)

remove the shroud around the steering colum and you will see how it all goes together.
here you can see the hole that the lock slots into.

Most pugs and citroens use the same barrels with the same connectors, easy to pop down your local scrappy and cut some out of a car to repair your loom

so i just fitted ignition barrell starts up and everything as it should but the steering lock still not engaging :mad: ,
is the lock just the bit on the barrel or is there more to it ,,

I had the same problem buddy, in the end i had to tap the column out slightly (ie make the gap between the steering wheel and dash a little larger), it can go either way ive found, too tighter gap and it wont work, too bigger gap and it wont work, try to find the happy medium, hope this helps...

ah ok so undo bolt at the bottom of the column and pull slightly, and see if that works . thanks ill try this tomorrow.

The hammer nearly came out today.

i just cant get my head round this f,ing lock.
is the metal bit sticking out of the ignition barrel the only part ?? i really cant see how that locks it.

says its needed here but my barrel just slotted in ( kind of ) i didnt use the snap bolt.

No need to undo anything mate, just remove the bottom plastic coweling and tap the steering wheel boss outwards, the steering shaft sits on bearings you see and can move either in or out with the aid of a hammer, make sure you use a rubber hammer or a piece of wood to soften the blow of the hammer or you will damage the boss/steering wheel, if the steering wheel is too far out then just hit it from where the steering wheel rubber renault bung sits, again use rubber or wood to reduce the chance of damage.

NOT a good way to adjust it because the strearing shaft is designed to colaps in a crash. you could be affecting an important saftey device.

The adjustment is a matter of mm's and if I were to crash the 5 hard enough to colapse the steering column it would be the least of my worries,the way I have explained it is the way many members have done it and told me to do in the past.

tried undoing bolt today and pullingg and and out to see if it engages at any point butg no luck , i will try giving it a lil hammer love in the near future if that wont get it working then i guess ill have to replace the whole column :(

No mate its still not engaging :mad:. just bought a new column, so im gonna try the barrel in this , hope it works.

when you take the key out of the barrel a metel peice comes out, and when the key is turned it goes in , not sure how it actually locks the wheel / column though ??

Had the afternoon off today so i got stuck into this efing steering lock,
and ive done it :).

A bit fidly and not sure i can explain how but ill try.

You need to remove the barrel casing from the column ( fig 1 above )
this is done by removing the brass snap off bolt ( i used a dremmel with a cutting disc and put i line in it so i could unscrew with a flathead screwdriver ).

Inside there is a bolt (like a rectangle door lock bolt) .
On one side of the lock bolt there is a groove ( make sure the bolt goes back in the same way as it came out ) .

On the ignition barrel is a metal peice that moves in and out when the key is put in and out , the end of this needs to slot into the groove on the lock bolt.

it took me alot os pi55ing about but i got it in the end.

Also when i withdrew the lock bolt a small ballbearing and a spring fell out ,looks like it was to help the bolt slide, i did not refit it as it would be impossible i think.

You may wish to buy a new snap bolt ( mike sells them ) or you could reuse the one you turned into a screw however this may help a thief, i had a new one already so i used it.

Basically im not a mechanic im a truck driver, but i managed it.
Just get it apart and im sure you will work it out. :cool:

thinking about it ,without the barrel fitted there is nothing stopping the lock from engaging at any time as it is free to slide about ,sharp bend maybe could slide it into the shaft ,presuming the holes are lined up . :crap:
