Had this "unknown milage" gearbox kicking around a while and i only used it to rob 5th gear off of to put on my known good gearbox.
Well i was bored this evening so stripped it down for a laugh thinking maybe rebuild it as a good spare.

Needs a few syncro hubs, detent spring, few bearings, 2nd gear and 5th gear will be a laugh asking renault how much that will cost in parts

First of all adam, great thread, very useful for many peeps for future reference, id just like to ask where is 5th gear in the second pic and do you think it would be possible to just replace 5th out of the gt box with the 5th out of a say clio/kangoo diesel for a better mpg while cruising whilst retaining a good 1st-4th ratio??

thanks

Nice thread, interesting seeing the box split down and that.

I've never done a gearbox rebuild before and hopefully will never have to and while I know what bearings are and that the parts you mentioned "Needs a few syncro hubs, detent spring, few bearings" were those parts obviously worn upon inspection then? come to mention it what purpose to the first two serve?

When you re-assemble is their a requirement to check clearances and endfloat with feeler blades?

5th gear is on the right in the 2nd picture
i'd hazard a guess you will need both parts of 5th gear left n right gears in the 2nd pic to make it work thats as long as the centre bores n everything else is the same as the old one...
If someone has the bits your looking to fit on and if you cover postage i'd happily try them on this gearbox to see if they fit and work out on the bench

tiff_lee,
Basically because i dont know this box as ive never drove it i'd put new bearings top n bottom of the shafts purely as a just in case.

Also the syncro hub teeth which engage with the teeth on the gears are worn mostly on the 2nd gear side ie. forced into 2nd hard alot possibly due to bad syncro rings not bringing 2nd gear up to speed quick enough or just abuise) and so because i'm going to be running a t25 and doing track work it i want it to last and not fail me.

Also if you in the 11th picture you'll see 3 metal spring clips these push out the 3 rollers to lock the synco hub in place and as you can see 1 clip has broken off... common issue i've told there is 2 types of clips for these gearboxes

If someone had say a gearbox which was just a little crunchy into gear yet held fine and didnt whine then these pictures will help alot,
You need very minimal tools and a couple of circlip tools, to just change the syncro rings. If it was repaired as soon as the problem showed up you wouldn't have much else if anything other to change apart from the selector seal kit, diff seal and a few circlips for good measure

When i come round to rebuilding it properly i'll take some more pictures :)

can you confirm if the syncro rings are all the same?,can good ones be used elsewhere if there worn out?
:)

yup all the syncro rings are the same

i might get in contact with a local bearing supplier and see if he can match up a set of bearings using the makers numbers on the bearing races as it would make a refurb job much more cheaper

First of all, top work Fordy! I have two spare gearboxes that I would like to rebuild and this thread will no doubt be invaluable.

As for the fifth gear, as Fordy has already alluded to, in theory, it should be possible and fairly simple to do. I would try to pick up a complete Kangoo gearbox for reference the first time you do it as there will probably be subtle differences.

The two spare gearboxes I have, have little deferences, like the selector shafts being different diameters? I'll chuck a few pics up with corresponding JB3 XXX part numbers.

The fiddly part is getting the casings back together with the selectors and detents back in correctly. top work :agree: we just scrapped 3-4 gearboxs worth of stripped bits :( a few weeks ago.

Renault actually use special 'Gearbox Tables' that you can put on an engine stand type arrangement. I think they can be locally made?

yeah i seen that adapter plate but my engine stand has a turbo a series engine on it being built atm so the stand is out of action

Will do james, i get sick and tired of the revs sitting so high at 60, its not so bad now im running on 15's instead of 13's and engine wear aswel would be an issue imo so its all winwinwin not to mention the peace and quiet from a lower db coming from the exhaust, really i only use 1,2,3 and 4th for prooving a point:cooter: ,fifth is my chilling gear, i will retain the old gt fifth and refit for 1/4 mile days/track days so i dont get a big drop in revs changing from fouth to fifth thus keeping a good close ratio, i will keep the lads updated with the fifth gear dont worry:agree:

Yer would be nice with it not revving so high in 5th, and make longer journeys much nicer.

I work at a volvo dealership and remember some older volvo used the same box as the r5, dont know about ratios etc but it looks bang on and only difference is it uses the mechanical speedo cable as opossed to the gt electric one, but every wondered what that bung is next to it? its for a different speedo. I found the book used for repairing them so thought it could come in usefull for a few things? so let me know if you need any pages scanned, sorry for crap picture was a quick pic on the phone

The 400 range of Volvo used the jb/JC type gearboxes, as well as the 1.8 and 2.0 litre 8 valve Renault F block engines.
