We have a 3.0ltr v6 CDTI (turbo diesel) signum in at the moment, his headgasket has been slightly pressurising his coolant system for awhile and we promised him we'd do it when we were quiet over christmas.......
This really is the most well engineered/over engineered engine ive ever worked on.

Pic of the bay and a close up of the turbo. sry for the poor quality.

Pic of inside the rocker cover, valves are all shimmed( i personally dont like hydraulic tappets, but i also dont like reshimming valves )
Also if you look closely the exhaust cam has a split gear with one gear being sprung loaded to reduce any backlash noise/timing effects.

We had a toyota soarer in once with a bit of a spaghetti pipework on there twin ceramic turbos, work of art but a pain in the ar*e ive never heard a smoother engine tho.

not exactly complicated, but hassle wise.... a mk1 r5.

need the engine and box out? - need to remove rad, steering rack, driveshaft and hubs
change the timing chain? - engine and box out.....
cam change? engine and box out.
clutch change -need to remove rad, steering rack, driveshaft , hubs and gearbox....

you get the picture :(

the engine seems to of been an afterthought then???

chris

thats why i prefer working on trucks instead of cars that pic of engine is unbelievable our engines are just massive upto 16 litres or 12litre twin turbo v8s

people have been known to cut a section out of the bulkhead, from inside the car to access the timing cover.... then weld the section back in.

Tony Walker

lol i cant say id blame them..... wish i could do that to customers cars sometimes.

My old man had an XJS and is wasn't running right. I said "pop the bonnet and I'll take a look". As soon as I looked inside and saw all the pipes and cables everywhere, filling every inch of the massive engine bay, I decided that it was a job for his mechanic!

These are a little larger and tad more expensive than most engines, but they kept me busy for 2 years trying to get them to work properly, excellent now though!

The Rolls-Royce Merlin wasn't fitted to all the Spitfires. Some of them used Rolls-Royce Griffon lumps.

You can't beat the sound of a Merlin (or 4, on a Lanc') though
