Right now lads, the company i work for (cabcare security) produce security covers/guards for plant machinery and ive had a word with the deisgner who writes the programs for the automated router/cutter and he said if i can get a template for the r5 scuttle he'll be able to produce copies made out of polypropolene, which in laymans terms is unbreakable 5mm textured plastic which is also very light, now if i get enough interest in this ill start the ball rolling in getting a stack made up in the new year, im in the process of trying to get hold of a original stainless scuttle just for the template but if anyone else can help out with dimensions it would be appreciated, im also going to try and get them made up so they just push fit on so NO nuts and bolts/brackets, so please if you would be interested add your name below and ill get a price worked out.

Damn great idea, by any chance does this material bend like polycarbonate with use of a heat gun as I may have another use.

anyone else spot a problem here?
OE scuttle covers are thin plastic, maybe 0.5mm max - cos it bends over the metal edge at the bottom of the window, and then the rubber seal pushes over it. - 5mm will be too thick for the rubber seal to go over it....

Unless they are made like the stainless ones Sparkie, flat with clips screwed to them & hooked over the lips like the GT Tuning ones....

ive made alu scuttle covers that are push fit and sit on the little lips of metal in the corners of the wings and by the bonnet catch........the rubbers stop them lifting out

i made a cardboard template by hammering it as if i was cutting a gasket out on gasket paper and then put it nto aluminium :agree:

Thats exactly what I was thinking ste to fit them with minimal messing around there is the option to use those hang clips but with the smallest of countersunk screws in the cover to keep it looking neat or of course to use russells method which I was originally planning, its totally personal preference so opinions please? ill have a look to see if I can source the clips now,if anyone has any ideas where I could source these it would be appreciated, theres also the option of having a choice of letters routed into it but ill have to have a word with the designer to see exactly what can be achieved.

This may sound creud but just use an old scuttle trim and chop one inch length strips out of it from where it goes under rubber. Bond four per panel on the underside and hey presto. Lots of old scuttle trims out there.

i think if the grade of plastic/lexan or whatever it is,if its that good an flexy then why so think at 5mm? also it would be ideal if your going to that much effort that it goes over the scuttle and the top drainage channel in a way that you can still get the OE rubber strips on over the top....or your going to get water in there.

The 5mm plastic is the only type we use at work and i can source that no problem, our stock is from abroad and we only have big deliveries every few months so to order thinner sheet would mean a lengthy wait, what i plan to do now is wait until i go back, obviously. then get one made up, fit to my own gt and perfect the design, then ill take pics to upload so others can decide, basically im gauging interest atm and by the looks of it i think this has got the go ahead on here,

i plan to design so that original seals are retained as water leaks are a problem without them.

russell mate, the only setback i have now is the template and yeh it would be a good idea but tbh i need a stainless one to get a exact match, i will have a look at it boxing day and see if i could fabricate a template to take to work,

ATM im going to try and design one the way russell has described by fitting it using the metal edges just inside the wings and the bonnet catch area to keep it suspended whilst the seals keep it in place, if anyone who is interested but hasnt got seals a simple solution is to go to your local scrappy and take any seal off a car door/boot and cut to size needed for the GT scuttle.

I will keep you updated lads.....

Ive made the first one up today and fitted it to my GT, Ive taken plenty of pics for you all to see, All the o.e seals fit how they should as in pics, the only fixings on the cover is in the middle by the latch, if you look in the pics i have drawn four small wax dots in the centre, as i left my countersinker at work i have drawn the dots to show where the small countersunk holes will be (which i will drill ready) which will take four little selftapping screws (which i will supply with cover) and with the screws in place the cover is very secure. If you would like to buy one please pm me, price is going to have to be £25 posted due to taking longer to make than originally thought but please pay your own paypal fee.:)

Thank you

How hard is it to get to the battery? can it just be bent up if you remove the seal?

REGGY5GT
12-01-2012, 20:29
Ron no problem mate

adscan and schwartz its easy enough to fit yes and also removal is easy, its sort of flexible but remember its 5mm thick, you wouldnt be able to move it enough to get your hand to the battery, remove it by taking out the four screws in middle and slide covers towards the center to release them or just the one for the battery, not exactly a pitstop quickrelease i know.

REGGY5GT
12-01-2012, 21:48
The washer bottle would be up to you im affraid dude either by removal of cover or drilling with a hole cutter, if i were to drill a hole in them then other peeps might not be happy with that so im leaving them undrilled/fresh so they look flush and uncluttered,by all means i will drill a 2" hole above the filler neck so you can get your fingers in to remove washer bottle cap but you would have to specify that in a pm/order, if you want to drill your own hole for the washer then you can do it exactly where you would like it.:agree:

i will have a few sets made up over the weekend ready to ship out at the beginning of next week:)

This might sound like a silly question, but, how good is the heater fan when theses are fitted? It won't burn out the heater resistor with less airflow?

Nope, If you think about it the poly covers wont make any difference to the airflow because when the bonnet is closed the scuttle area is sealed off anyway due to the o.e seals. Even so, the cover isnt that tight to the edges to allow restriction.

Matt@CodeRedMotorsports
14-01-2012, 14:41
OE rubbers don't seal the scuttle, the rubbers seal the bonnet away from the scuttle, otherwise you would be sucking the engine fumes and heat from the under bonnet area into the car with the heater blower.
Also, if the scuttle were sealed completely by oe rubber, where would the air come from to feed the heater blower....
Not peeing on your fire one bit, as what you have done looks quite good!!

REGGY5GT
14-01-2012, 15:04
I cant see an issue with the heaters, the cover is not that tight up to the seals to cause an issue and more than enough air will be able to pass freely, also air will be able to get in via bonett catch and drain holes ect, the gt heater fan doesnt draw a massive amount of air anyways, if its a problem which i cant see it being then the owner could always drill a few strategically placed holes in that area.

Matt@CodeRedMotorsports

Ok.

If you get plenty of off cuts of this stuff in size just bigger than an A4 sheet, you could sell it to the rally boys for mudguards too.

Obviously if you make £million from this idea I deserve a cut.... ?;)

Thats definately an idea matty, this stuff is impossible to break, but id say it was slightly too thick (5mm) for m/guards, im toying with ideas of doorcards atm, what thickness would they usually use in rally and would it need to be bent at any angles or just flat sheets screwed on?? i can do bending ect but id need dimensions.

Yes of course it's for real.. over 50 scuttle panel kits sold and I've had just one not delivered through no reasons of my own, I waited and gave enough time to make sure the panel wasn't lost or going to turn up late, over the years of being on this club I've sold numerous items wIthaca minimal hiccups and if I were out to rip people off it wouldn't be for the pennies involved as in the unfortunate case you had, by all means yes it was still your money but like I say.. plenty sold and received with many happy people. Anyhow that aside yes I'm still doing them so fellow members please disregard this "issue"
