Just to clarify - I think dave is saying connect one clamp on the negative post on the battery and then connect it to the engine block at some point where there is good exposed metal. you will need the ignition on and possibly be cranking to see if there is load going through the jump lead and not the earth straps on the car, not sure if it will pop with just the ignition on. Can anyone clarify?

so the new battery went on, the car started fine and then the batterys dead again after a few miles? days not used?

to check the battery you need the car running, volt meter on the battery terminals and you should get 14 volts, or 14.6, less and the alternators poop..

is your alternator belt nice and tight?

im in the area again this weekend and the following week so could pop over but you'll need to msg me as i will forget..:crap:

ah !

Have you a multimeter ? Only reason I asked is my alarm had water ingress and for some reason it flattens the battery in around 2 days.

I went through the same process as you.

If your new battery is flat - charge it back up. Put it back on the car and have a run around.

Check the voltage. It should be around 12v when engine off and around 13- 13.5v when started. Load up the car with electrics - turn on the heated rear window , fans on full wack , lights on main beam.

Remeasure the voltage.

If its dropping like a stone then it looks like you have a goosed alternator - or at least something wrong with the charging system.

If it stays constant then you have another drain - possibly alarm.
