Engine Removal [Archive]

I have taken all the ancillaries off my engine, disconnected driveshafts, drained fluids etc etc etc and the engine is ready to come out. All i need to do is disconnect the engine mounts.

So the question I have is, whats the best method of lifting the engine out in relation to where I should lift from??

Anyones personal experience would be grand :)

there should be a lifting eye on the front right of the cylinder head and another is located just under the water pump and sticks out towards the rear.

Old seatbelts underneath help if you havent got lifting eyes. You can undo all the top bolts in the mounts and it wont drop anywhere, then lift it off the mounts. The gearbox end always drops a tad as you lift it so get that side tight. Then go slow - you always miss somthing :laugh:

Im sure these are getting a rare item now with the amount which get bent due to forgetting about unbolting it.

Speedo cable on a mini, many moons ago - lifted the car off the floor with the speedo cable :laugh:

Or forgetting to move it when dropping back in :cry: :laugh:

Another pair or two of hands would be good for you an all,,my bulkheads got some snail trails on it due to a breezy afternoon and lone impatience :cry::laugh:

if you havent got the lifting eye, you can wrap around the waterpump - lower rad feed and the exhaust manifold - turbo end.....

Ill have a look if i have the lifting points on mine. If not ill be going for the method mentioned by Sparkie :)

I do recall not disconnecting a gear selector rod many moons ago and bending it!!oops...

Lucky you mentioned it as I havent disconnected it again..doh!!!!

Whats the best end to disconnect it from???

Underneath the gearbox you'll see a rubber boot on the end of the gear selector.

Underneath this boot will be a 13mm bolt securing the end of the gear selector rod to the gearbox. Undo this bolt and slip it off.

DO NOT undo the smaller sleeved join just behind the rubber boot! This is the adjustable part, if you move or adjust this, you'll lose all your gears.

whats peoples thoughts on removing by hand?

Im unsure if I will be able to get hold of a hoist as my mate is away till after xmas :cry:

it will be completley stripped so will just be the block with pistons/crank/sump

I've done it before a fair few times with 2 people, out in one lift. Thats only engine though, always left gearbox in doing this

2 People with the gearbox removed is do-able, but for one person (Apart from Robbo & Brigsy) you'll risk putting your back out!!

I lifted the complete bottom half of an engine (Block, Crank, Pistons, Liners, Flywheel, Clutch) into the back of my car at the weekend & thought it through carefully before I made the lift! Ask anyone with a bad back if it's worth taking a chance!! :dearme:

Your local HSS (Or Alternative) will Hire you an Engine Crane for the day for a few quid?

mark - thats the plan.... no need for gearbox to come out at the min.

when refitting - is it a PITA to get it lined up properly on the mounts?

I don't have too much of a problem doing it as i've done it far few times and know how to lift it out in one go, its easy to line up on the mounts once its slotted onto the gearbox as it sort of lines itself up.

As Steve says though, if unsure or you feel its hurting don't do it. I have suffered from bad backs in past and honestkly its last thing you want to be doing ;)

Removed the engine last night from the Silver scrap 5 which we picked up, rather than getting the engine hoist out decided to drop the subframe with all attached still (driveshafts / hubs / gearbox) drained all fluids first though. Then took two of us to move the subframe with engine in place to move into into the garage. As Steve says its very heavy to move and for the cost of buying / renting a hoist it will be much easier in the long run.

I will have a look into the cost of hire (never thought of that:agree:).

My mate has a hoist I could use but not for a few weeks - im just being impatient and was thinking of ways to get the engine out and stripped to asses the damage :D

I'd always advise using an engine crane to lift the lump out, saves wrecking the surrounding bodywork. I've took an engine and box out of an 11turbo on my own with a scaffold pole and rope, didnt matter about damaging the shell as it was going for scrap.

Short block on its own weighs nowt steve :D

just had a quick search of the local plant hire sites and it looks like I can get a manual chain hoist for only £17.50 for the first day.....or £35.50 for a week - WINNER:agree:

tbh im planing on repainting the bay when its out as its full of scars from previous work and definetley needs a tidy up

I have improvised.

I have attached two mounts to the walls with heavy duty bolts, ran a scaffold bar across them. And then attached a block and tackle to the scaffold bar to lift the engine out with.

I hope it works!!!:scared:

If you have space to store one an engine hoist isn't dear to buy.
I have a 2 ton one I bought off ebay for £119 brand new a few years ago now.
Used it hundreds of times and it even fitted in the back of the SLaguna when I still had her.

as he says matey.. mine has paid itself off 3 times over.. everyone wants to rent it, and i dont charge much to them :)
