What paint have you guys used for your gearbox's ?

In the past i used a halford engine enamel on my 205 box.. 1 year later , of the car not moving its all bubbled up and come off.

Need something thats tested and proven really.

Arnt the casings ali you would need a alloy primer before your top coat

Silver Hammerite worked well. But make sure you degrease the hell out of the box first

A chap at work is restoring an RS Turbo escort, he used Halfords VHT silver on all his alloy parts, after cleaning everything with a small rotary brush, it came out really well.

hmm hmm.. I think what ever i do ill definatly lay an acid etch, ive done quite a bit of reserach and it appears so long as theres a real good etch primer or an epoxy primer then all should be fine.. hmm hmm...

Maybe ill fork out for the por 15 engine enamel.

I used high temp silver paint last time i painted one. Box only lasted a couple of thousand miles so won't be doing it again

Would power coating work?

I just used Hammerite Smooth-Rite rattle can on the Raider after giving the whole gearbox a good degreasing with a Jetwash & a load of GUNK sprayed on and agitated round to clean the gearbox up in the first place.

Yeah It worked out well, if you wanted to put a bit of time in to it you could use a high build in between for a proper nice finish. 2k straight black I think the colour code was RAL9005, as black as you can get without using just straight black tinter.
