with gasless just make sure everything is covered as it generally spits a lot..

dash, windows etc..

I would recommend using 0.6mm wire on gas to weld car body work. I'm a service engineer for machine mart. Gas producers alot cleaner weld

8mm wire, you could weld titanic with that :D but OK you ment 0.8mm.

As ron says thats a bit heavy really for panel steel but if you're not too fussed what the welds look like then you can get away with it welding 1/4" at a time. It'll be fine in heavier stuff like inner sills etc.

gasless is the devil, it's horrible so if your welder will accept gas then get some normal wire in there (0.6mm as said) and get a bottle screwed up to it. If not, just take your time and don't expect pretty welds

them stupid little bottles.. sold by the likes of MACHINE MART (yes ron ;)). are also the devil... somtimes they last a good while, other times they seem to be half empty.

Well, the problem with them is that the valve doesn't always seal shut when you fetch the regulator off! If you stick a damp thumb over the top of the brass thread once you've taken the reg off, you can check to see that it's sealing shut. If it's bubbling past your thumb (or bubbling in a bucket of water) then give the center of the valve a tap to release some gas then test again. They'll shut properly eventually. I have to do this with the argon bottles, which I use like twice a year at the most for welding allu. There's nothing more annoying than having to go buy another bottle because the 90% one you had has drained away

as were on the subject, what do you folks in the know suggest regarding a welding equipment?
also im assuming there an art to tig welding? as it looks soo much better than mig! is this why alot just go for mig instead?
i know migs can do a neat job but the tig seems to be superior? or is it?

for some reason, dont ask me why as i dont know myself:cartman: but i really dont like spot welds, id prefer to seam weld everything if i could.

advice please:)

Mig is a few hundred for a setup. Tig can be a few thousand.

Tig is only expensive if you want to weld Alluminum and stainless materials, you can get an inverter to tig steel quite cheaply.

I've always used 'pub gas' a steel liner and a 0.8 tip when welding

Them inverters range from 200 upwards but what people don't realise you can't use them on a 13 amp plug.

A good starter welder we do is a Mig135te can be used on a 13amp plug is a gas welder and can use 0.6 and 0.8 welding wire

There are a couple of TiG kitted inverters on ebay at the moment using a housholdd 3 pin 240v plug......
