View Full Version : Smoke!
After changing the turbo on my 5, i am having some strange issues with smoke :crap:
Only happens some times, and only when sat still, for example in traffic, and only happens after idling for 30~60 seconds an i get oil smoke.
I also seem to have higher oil pressure after the turbo change, could this be anything to do with it?

i had a similar problem with my 5 i cleaned all the breather pipes and its been fine that may be worth a go :agree:
If you have changed the turbo and it's started smoking id imagine the turbo is the cause of it. Sounds like the classic turbo seals on the way out.
I was trying to avoid the idea that it is due to the new turbo, but that was my thought! I will check the other ideas though!

Did you prime the turbo after fitting?
oil return pipe kinked/blocked?
Oil return is ok, i have had come loose since so have had it off.
Prime it? It wasnt a brand new turbo, just one that had done literally a couple of thousand miles at most, has been sat in my shed for a few years though - do the seals go hard over time?
I did turn the engine over for a while with the king lead removed before i started it after fitting.

Ideally you should put in a bit of oil , but by turning the car over with the HT lead disco'd it will pump the oil around ..
Has the car been off the road a while? I had an issue with the NRV on the oil pump being stuck shut so it was making too much oil pressure and forcing oil past the seals even on known good turbos!
It was off the road for about 6 weeks, where is the non return valve? That sounds promising!

I would say it's the 2nd hand turbo you have just fitted!!!
That's what I'm thinking
Bit of a pain in the arse seeing that I have modified my downpipe to fit!
