I bought my first Renault 5 gt turbo years ago when I was a nipper!lol I drove it for quite a few years and then bought a second one and kept them both.

I went travelling from 2005-2006 and my 5 has never been used since. It has been put on the backburner as I have bought a house etc etc. It lived in the garage and slowly rotted away :sad2::sad2:

Recently I have started buying a few bits for it. I went to another members, Tinker Dell, and bought some standard alloys and whilst there he showed me his 5.

It was pretty much OE and I loved it. He was kind enough to take me out for a drive in it and my enthusiasm returned.

So the work began this weekend...........

Last night I started stripping the engine down. I have been losing all my coolant and cant work out where???

And some of the water pump bolts sheared off as I tried to remove the pump:(

But at least I have started on it :agree::agree:

Top work fella - loving the BB Tuning stickers - If only they had treated customers well........

LiamR
30-10-2011, 18:17
Cheers lads :)

Its not in to bad condition. Bit of rust around the windscreen though. But its a long term project so no rush.

Ill keep pics appearing when I do anything to it.

The BB Tuning stickers are ace.lol. I never had any real dealings with them to be honest. But i am thinking of getting rid of the bonnet and going back to a standard one.

Really not sure that i will recall where all the hoses go that I removed last night though!!!

Never mind your these updates... well done mate for keeping this yours for all these years :smokin:

LiamR
06-11-2011, 14:46
Yeah thats def good advice- i have started taking pics and labelling things.

The old haynes manual and the info on here is invaluable too.

I do have all the parts I need to put it back to standard-most of them are in piles in the garage!!lol. But thanks anyway for pointing me in the right direction. I am sure i will need some spare bits and bobs soon.

My steering wheel is just a large lump of mould and fungus at the moment!!!

Had a productive few days on the 5 lately :)

Got both driveshafts and calipers and discs off

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_0359.jpg

The roll pin on the passenger side one came out quite easily which I was surprised at :agree:

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_0361.jpg

Quite a few bits out of the engine bay now and its pretty much ready for the engine to come out. I cant believe how dirty it all is!!

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_0362.jpg

And the pile of parts I have removed

Am off to Vietnam for 3 weeks tomorrow so it will all be on hold for a bit. But once I get back i will be back on it again.

Mate.. you really meant it when you told me you wanted to your 5 up and running ASAP.. at this rate it'll be done before you leave for 'Nam!!

From what you told me tho' I expected a lot worse.. seems you still have a good foundation to start with and the fact that you've owned it for yrs and yrs just makes it all the more worth while ;)

Keeping my eye on this one.. when it's done a trip down to Kenty is due

LiamR
10-11-2011, 23:29
hiya,

Yep your spot on, I want my 5 done asap - it will be funds that hold me back but ill def get there :)

My 5 isnt in too bad condition, but it does need a bit of loving here and there, which I will hopefully achieve!!

As for popping down, your more than welcome mate :agree::agree: maybe try and get a few members with our 5s to meet up??

LiamR
12-12-2011, 17:53
Rite- I am back from holiday now, have ordered a complete set of black hoses :)

All I have to do is disconnect the gear selector rod and the exhaust downpipe and hopefully I can take the engine out tomorrow.

I will add some pics of my progress tomorrow- wish me luck :agree:

LiamR
13-12-2011, 18:54
Slightly productive today............

I have disconnected the gearbox selector rod, disconnected the exhaust downpipe and took all the bolts out of the three engine mounts.

So the engine is ready to come out tomorrow...I hope :)

Just hope you dont get bored of all my questions!!!

LiamR
15-12-2011, 17:18
Thanks lads. It did feel quite good to get the engine out. Now the fun begins.....

Today I took off various hoses etc and removed the inlet and exhaust manifold, which was held on by about 4 nuts between them. Good eh???:agree:

I also took the turbo off and am glad to say that there was no play in the shaft.

I even still have the started motor heashield which I was surprised at :)

And to top it all of, 15 of these turned up today :agree::agree::agree:

I went for standard black.....the right decision????

I have removed the head...at last

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2113.jpg

Apart from being pretty damn messy, it all looks ok. I have bought new engine mounts and about to order a few bits from Mike.

Is it worth changing the liner seals?

Tony Walker
30-12-2011, 20:47
Looking good, and the engine crane/beam held up well :D

LiamR

Its all going to plan at the moment.

And yep-the engine crane worked a treat....thank god:)

LiamR
15-01-2012, 18:21
A small update.......

I have split the head, block and gearbox. Taken the old clutch out, which looked fine!!!

Today I sprayed the whole lot in gunk to try and get rid of the years of grease and grime that looked about an inch thick! The gearbox and block havent come up to bad. Am in two minds as to whether bother spraying them or not.

I am concerned that it may all start to flake off and look awful.

Last week I also popped down to see mike and I spent a couple of quid and bought all of the following plus a bonnet and a front bumper :)

Ooo we like pics of bits! Lol you going oe with it then pal?

LiamR
15-01-2012, 18:42
Lol. :) Yes I think oe is the way.

Although the more I keep digging about in the loft and garage the more bits I keep finding ie a stainless boost pipe from intercooler to carb, lobster elbow. Both of which I quite like but they slightly go against what I am aiming for.........

DILEMMA!!!!!!:confused::confused::confused:

Andyturbo!
15-01-2012, 18:49
I'm in the same dilemma with mine mate, I've decided to go totally oe on the outside but have a few Cheecky mods under the bonnet, I think that's a good way to go imo

Tony Walker
15-01-2012, 19:49
I agree too i think. but keep your oe bits if u ever plan selling.

Where did you get your hoses from mate? If you don't mind me asking

Tony Walker
16-01-2012, 22:49
standard silicone hoses do look smart in a nice clean tidy OE way :D mines a bit silly blue for coolant hoses and red for boost :D

Andyturbo!
16-01-2012, 22:55
Yeah I like the oe look but I also like the shiney silly highly modded look under the bonnet, oh the dilemma!

LiamR
18-01-2012, 20:20
I think I am going to go for a totally standard look on the outside and predominantly standard under the bonnet...........

but I am after a few more horses if possible ;)

Steevo...i feel like I have achieved next to nothing, and when I look at the car I do think jeezzz what have I done and will it all go back together!!!!!!

But I am def keeping all my oe parts :agree:

LiamR
18-01-2012, 20:35
And a slight update.......

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2131.jpg

I have degreased the block and gearbox. Painted the block with hammerite.Fitted the valeo clutch.

I have also attached the block to the gearbox and fitted my new starter motor. Didnt take any pics of this as my hands were far too grubby!!lol Ill add some later.

I do feel like I am getting somewhere now though.

In the engine bay tomorrow giving it a good clean out before replacing all the engine mounts......and then the engine will be going back in!!:D

I have decided to put the head back on once the engine is in situ.

LiamR
29-01-2012, 18:03
Progress has been a bit slow of late

But I have put in a few hours in over the last week.

I have connected the block to the gearbox, attached the starter motor, got the heatshield ready too.

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2135.jpg

I have also put in new engine mounts all round including the little metal mount that the engine stabiliser sits in :agree:

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2136.jpg

I also spent a good few hours cleaning the engine bay up and getting the piles of grease and general crap off the subframe. It looks loads better I think.

Have taken the head apart and am going to take it into work tomorrow and get out the studs that have snapped when I took the water pump off....:crap::sad2:

Will I get this finished for ND????

Mr Raider
29-01-2012, 20:18
Its 6 months to go until ND, and you're already cooking on gas bud! ;) Reckon you'll get it done no worries, good work mate coming along nicely :) :agree:

LiamR
01-02-2012, 15:56
I hope it will be ready for ND but I am not confident

Having a bit of trouble getting the broken water pump bolts out of the head :-)

But new manifold studs and locking nuts turned up yesterday (cheers mike)

TOMTOM
01-02-2012, 17:43
Get stuck into it fella, persevere with it, it's hard I know when u get to a certain point but it clears and then u think rite, let's be avin ya mentality kick in to get it done, lol:laugh: goin well tho dude:)

LiamR
18-02-2012, 13:06
I hope your right TOMTOM :)

Had a tiny bit of progress at last....finally managed to find a bit of time at work to do some work on my head.

I drilled the snapped bolts out of the head (ones which held the water pump on) and tapped new threads in. So I am happpy now as i can hold the new water pump on with all 7 bolts.

Hopefully today I can find my valve spring compressor and grinding paste and get the valves sealing perfectly.

Then give the head a clean up and put in the new manifold studs that I have got.

IS it ok to pop a bit of loctite on these before they go in does anyone know??????????

Ill add a few pics later :agree:

Mr Raider
19-02-2012, 20:39
You can do mate, although really wouldnt have thought you would need to unless threads are bit shady plus could possibly make it more diffcult should you need to remove manifolds at a later date.

Coming along well :)

LiamR
23-02-2012, 00:38
I opted out of using loctite in the end. Two of the studs wont go in, so am going to retap the threads tomorrow.

All the valve grinding is completed now :)

As for the hoses- have a dig around on ebay mate :agree:

LiamR
26-02-2012, 18:21
HAPPY DAYS!!!!!!!:):):):)

I have had a productive few days.......

The block is back in the engine bay - had a bit of hassle lining the mounts up, dropping the engine and getting the bolts done up, but I got there in the end.

I have put the headgasket on, popped the cylinder headback on ( all the valves reground), put on new manifold studs, reset the tappets and torqued the head bolts up.

This afternoon I also put the new water pump on.

I am quite happy as it feels like I am actually starting to get somewhere....although everything seems to take ages as I am permanently seeming to be cleaning the years of black gunk off of everything!

A few pics below - apologies if there are too many.

Am waiting for a few parts for the engine bay to arrive so I thought I would have a go at the interior today.:)

One OE red carpet (Thanks Wallace) after a few hours with the wash vac thingy!lol

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2312.jpg

The old grey carpet that came out. Anyone need one? Will be cleaned too.

Another pic of the carpet before it went in. Am pretty happy with the condition.

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2314.jpg

Had a bit of look around the floor to check for no rust etc and it was as clean as a whistle. None even found in the footwells. To say I was happy is an understatement. Was def expecting to have to do a spot of welding here.:agree:

LiamR

Bought a few bits off Mike (:agree:) the other day to finish off the engine bay

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2340.jpg

But then I took a bit of a step backwards, not that it was my fault.

I popped some coolant in the 5, bled the system up etc and everything seemed fine, no leaks etc. Then i pressurised the system and could hear a hissing and water had appeared on the floor :(

It was coming out from near where the water pump joins the cylinder head. So I nipped the bolts up, still no joy.

By this point I was getting a spot annoyed so I removed some of the breather hoses and I could then see the actual water pump/cylinder head.

Upon closer inspection the leak was firing out from between the two parts of the water pump, not from the water pump to cylinder head joint. Not happy considering its a brand new water pump that I bought a few years back.

I took the water pump off, took it apart and found this...

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2343.jpg

As you can see, the gasket was not set correctly.

So yesterday I replaced the gasket, put the pump back on and filled the system with coolant. Pressurised it up and it seems fine :)

Just a bit of an annoying setback really.......

LiamR
08-07-2012, 21:33
A couple of days ago, I added engine oil, gearbox oil and coolant. All ok..now :)

And so I took the king lead off and went to turn the engine over to get the oil pressure up.

I turned the key in the ignition and......

CLICK CLICK CLICK..

I was not happy. The starter motor just clicked. It did sporadically do this before the rebuild but not about 20 times and nothing. So a bit of fault finding was needed.

I attached a jump lead from the head to the battery earth - still nothing. So I then took the connector of death apart and fed a live from the battery to the solenoid 12V feed. It turned over :agree:

I had read the article about getting a relay and bypassing all the connections etc to the solenoid so i popped down Maplins and did this mod. It took not too much time and now my 5 turns over on the starter each time without fail. Am very impressed.

So then the moment of truth, I attached the king lead and tried to start her up...

It fired up on about the 5th turn. I was pretty happy. Although it wont idle, will only run if I keep my foot on the accelerator slightly. Prob needs a bit of carb fettling, but I didnt have time.

So hopefully sometime this week I can get her ticking over :agree:

I havent posted for a while but the work on the 5 has been ongoing. :)

The engine is pretty much done!:agree: Dave Reed popped over for a good few hours and was a massive help. Finding an air leak on the carb which was causing havoc! So she now starts and runs great - well ticks over!lol. As thats all I can do with it at the moment.

The engine is not 100% but its pretty much there. Just the OE stickers to go on and the hot air feed to the air box. Also a few clips etc that I am waiting to be returned from being zinc passivated.

This is a pic I took today and I am pretty proud of what I have achieved

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2632.jpg

I also started stripping the bodywork today in prep for the respray. Took off bumpers, lights etc. When I removed the rear bumper, the passenger side rear bumper mount was perfect :D but when I looked at the drivers side.......

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/DSC_2628.jpg

It didnt exist!!! I have bought the repair panels a while back just incase and purchased a mig welder the other week. But I cant weld! Have to keep practising then get on with this repair. As I def cant leave it like this!

So thats where I am so far, cant believe I have been doing it for over a year now!! Time flies :coffee:

That engine bay looks brilliant mate :agree:
Its amazing how time flies when you're deep in a resto project, but at least you can look at your engine bay and see the fruits of all that years hard work.

Looking great mate, would you be changing over to original hoses for the ones which have got the silicone hoses on there?

Brackets look really nice on there, something I need to sort out with Mike as he has a set saved for me :)

Just need to put those stickers on the car ;)

I did buy the silicone hoses for the project, and I do think they look OK. But in an ideal world I would change to OE. But my old ones are not that great.

I think I will get the stickers on once its sprayed and back together. One of the last touches :)

Had other things going on recently so progress has stalled again sadly.

Thanks for the compliment Tony

A slight bit of progress lately. I am still stripping the car in prep for its respray. Trying to rust proof it for the future and making sure everything is in A1 condition.

Bumpers and bodykit is off, spoiler off, rear side glass removed. The windscreen is being taken out tomorrow and then I can get on with repairing the rusty windscreen surround.

It seems never ending.....

I have bought underseal for it today which I hope to get on with soon.

I have one friend who works in a bodyshop and he did put a new rear quarter on my old 5 but he doesn't seem to keen to help out this time :(

I am tempted to have a crack myself. What's the worst that can happen? Blow a hole through it and have to get a second hand panel to put on I guess...

get your sleeves rolled up and have a go mate. i had little or no welding experience when i got my 5 now sick of the sight of the bloody welder  theres really nothing more rewarding than being able to do it yourself. and once youve got a feel for it its pretty simple
plus once you have learned to weld the silly thin metal on the 5 everything else will seem a doddle :agree: might even earn yourself a bit of cash my welders paid for itsself twice over;)

I agree have a crack yourself. i always think if someone else can do it so can i.

good luck

Well, I decided to have a crack at it myself with a varying degree of success........

The pics below show the rotten parts that i have chopped out. I sort of wish you could still get the windscreen surround panel as I would probably buy one.

All the pics below show the rotten metal I have cut out,and some I havent yet cut out. Still not too sure how to address the rotten bottom corners I have cut out....

I'd say get a specialist in to sort the screen surround. Looks like it needs the professional touch to get right given the number of areas needing attention.

Nothing like learning these things for yourself though :agree:

I decided to have a go myself lol. I had mon/tues/weds off work this week so I got cracking with it. It has turned out not too bad. :)

When I send it to the bodyshop for spraying, if they say it's crap I'll just cut it out and let them do it. Am just trying to save a couple of quid that's all.

I am quite amazed at how easily the screen surround blew through when I was welding it though!!

Metal is really thin, as with most parts of the 5. I remember TNT Hammond welded TNT Andys windscreen surround a few years ago, lots of welding abit, then grinding to retain original shape but got there in the end. Keep going fella and it will soon be all solid with metal and not filler! lol :agree: :)

When I first started I was blowing holes all over the shop!! Lol. I got better the more I did. I didnt realise that decent, neat welding would be so tough!!

Although I must admit, I have put a thin skim of filler over the top, just to tidy it up. :(

In my spare time I had been working away on the 5.

I have put both the wings on and lined them up with the bonnet to a decent standard. I have popped on new discs and pads, although the calliper looks atrocious lol. I'll sort them out later. All of the glass is out.

I have repaired the windscreen surround to the best of my ability. I think it is fine. If not the body shop can cut it all out and start again

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/image-2.jpg

I have stripped pretty much everything off of the bodywork for the respray

I also picked up these brand new Valeo headlights the other day

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/image-1.jpg

So they should look good and neaten up the front. Need to get the Renault badge for the grille too.

And best of all- I rang the bodyshop today and booked the 5 in for its respray when I get back from holiday. So it should be going in just after Christmas. I can't wait :p

Do you know street end road in Chatham? There is a bodyshop there doing it for me.

Am quite worried about what I will do once its finished!!! Once it's done I'll take it to ND next year for sure. Or you can pop over anytime and have a look matey?

Well its been a while since I have done much to the 5 but this week I have started on it again.

First job was to repair the rear bumper mounts using the Ashy repair panels that I had. The pic below is how it looked before I started...

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/octren5_zpse7647b21.jpg (http://s1203.photobucket.com/user/liamroadnight/media/octren5_zpse7647b21.jpg.html)

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/octren51_zpsc827cd1d.jpg (http://s1203.photobucket.com/user/liamroadnight/media/octren51_zpsc827cd1d.jpg.html)

I am far from a great welder but I have had a little practice and so I decided to butt weld the repair on rather than just spot weld the whole panel over the top. I then whacked some primer on it to stop rusting until I get the car sprayed. I admit it doesnt look perfect but it is strong and will def hold the bumper.

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/octren53_zps5be2391f.jpg (http://s1203.photobucket.com/user/liamroadnight/media/octren53_zps5be2391f.jpg.html)

I then finished off the repair to my windscreen surround which I am more than happy with. It needs a slight bit of finishing by the bodyshop but its a million miles better than it initially was, as seen in the previous pics. :)

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/octren52_zps38b942b4.jpg (http://s1203.photobucket.com/user/liamroadnight/media/octren52_zps38b942b4.jpg.html)

I also cleaned all the muck from the wheel arches and undersealed them to keep the rust and rot away in future years. I also had to remove the existing original decals for the respray. I thought this was a bit of a shame as they have prob been on the car since it was made  A heat gun and burnt fingers got the job done:agree:

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/octren54_zpsf9144a54.jpg (http://s1203.photobucket.com/user/liamroadnight/media/octren54_zpsf9144a54.jpg.html)

I also removed my tailgate as it was a tiny bit rusty and I sourced a really good condition one which will be going on. For the eagle eyed, the sub and amp will be disappearing too!!!

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/liamroadnight/octren55_zpsb01608c2.jpg (http://s1203.photobucket.com/user/liamroadnight/media/octren55_zpsb01608c2.jpg.html)

Hopefully it wont be nearly a year for my next bit of progress! :D
