gearbox locked up help

Ok , rares c1j powered clio has gone wrong.

It was fine driving up to a friends local garage, but when coming to restart the starter just clicked.

He removed teh starter which now spins free on the turn of the key, refitted and again it wont turn the car over.. removed it again and tried to bump the car in gear.. but it just locks the wheels.

putting the car in neutral and it will roll.

Ive not actually been up to look but any immediate thoughts.

In short the engine turns so not siezed, the gearbox turns but not in any gears with or without starter fitted, at least thats my understanding. Tried to bump the car but to no avail..

I can see it being somthing really simple but without having been up yet im not sure.:confused::confused:

ignore this thread a little as i was a bit wrong.

Basically starter motors missing the dowel and not spinning the starter, although we made a feeble attempt at trying to bump it but the wheels locking and the whole engine seems to lurch fowards as if somthings amiss.
