Quick question, whats the dangers of having a higher than standard compression ratio? And what side effects would you see from it?

Sorry being a bit backwards, what Im trying to find out is it is normal for the exhaust manifold to be glowing red hot after a easy 20 mile motorway drive at 65mph?
