View Full Version : My 5 Restoration
Just a few pics of my project so far, which is slow in progress at the moment. I bought this car from Ebay a few months ago without viewing in first, and to be honest it needed a little more work than I first thought. That said, it was in the main a solid shell with a great original interior and rebuilt engine and 5 previous owners, so i bought it. Structurally car is in need of two new inner and outer sills, rear bumper mounts and a new jacking point. Plus I am replacing a door and the bonnet (Thanks Adam005, Ashy and Mike 16V ;) )
http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i404/MrCanonfire/P8290018.jpg
I stripped the interior out and the floor pan and seal/edges are spot on, as are the rear quarters, front wings. The car has gone to the welders to be sorted out and then off to the bodyshop for the rest of the work and repray, as i'm not a welder/panel beater/sprayer I thought that was all best left to the professionals:wasntme:
My intention is to keep the exterior and interior as original as possible, with lowering/ Williams alloys. I've got some parts with the car that are waiting to go on, but the basics are going to be changed before I start modifying the engine:
New Battery Tray
New Front/Rear Screen Rubber
New Front/Rear Bumper Inserts
New Wishbones (have already)
New Polybush kit (have already)
New Brakes All Round (have all new discs already)
New Suspension All Round (coilovers or standard uprated?)
New Lighting (Headlights/Fogs/Repeaters)
And whatever else breaks or looks like needs replacing before I can move on to the luxuries such as engine modifications etc. Luckily the car came with it's original rear screen and door badges too which is nice :)
I will keep updating as i go and asking questions i'm sure, but check back if you're interested!!

That doesn't look half bad mate :)
Enjoy seeing a Raider getting worked on now, interior looks top nick too! :agree:
Thanks for the comments :agree:
I feel it's going to be a long road ahead, but thats half the fun!
I have been down to the bodyshop a few times in the last month or so to drop off some parts. They are taking photos of the restoration for me, but thought i'd take a few cheeky pics for my thread. Since last pics, the car has now been over to a welder who specialises in VW restorations. He has done a great job at completely replacing the inner and outer sills, new jacking points, new rear bumper mount sections. I've also had a new section welded in on the rear arch, below the fuel cap area. Looks like things are starting to come together now which is nice to see... really pleased with the work done thus far :)
After new inner and outer sills.......
http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i404/MrCanonfire/R51.jpg
The section below the fuel cap was cut out and was replaced with a good section...

Only one patch of corrosion found on the front screen, and minimal elsewhere just surface here and there. Under the carpets the floor is looking good too :)
Big thanks to Adam005 for the help, and Ashy, Mike(GT Spares) for all the parts so far :)

LMFAO:sad:
Bodyshop have got really stuck in the past two weeks!! Need to get some window fixings and rubbers all round, and front and rear bumper inserts, new window regulator and some little metal 'u' shaped brackets to hold the door lock barrels in place as they had seen better days.
The bodykit is just being prepped for paint before it's all bolted back together again :)
http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i404/MrCanonfire/FC7B5DFE.jpg
Really pleased with the result on the windscreen surround, only one patch of rust found, cut out and new welded in

Cheers Liam, Believe me mate your base car is a lot better than what I started with and you know that car inside out, so I can imagine yours will be awesome when done. Great to see your enthusiasm returned! ;)
Week til i get her back now, all spraying complete, just needs spoiler, fuel cap, glass putting in, interior, lighting and a replacement window regulator. Then a final machine polish! few pics......................:)

So after a LOT of new parts and panels and painting, it's home after a 5 1/2 month holiday at the bodyshop.... Gave it a good polish and wax before taking some pics today. On the downside I somehow managed to put an impressive 1" scratch on my sideskirt whilst I was hoovering the inside. I can say I almost burst into tears:cry:
So it'll need to go back at some point as i'm a picky ****er :crap:

I replaced all of the window seals and a new inner OE windscreen seal, new front and rear bumper inserts (rear one was a rip off!!)
Still have yet to put the new raider door badges on too.
Next steps are to buy a new set of GAZ coilies from R5_scotty and get my Williams wheels refurbished. Thats it for the exterior though, want to keep the rest standard inc the interior before I get to work on the engine mods. :)

Yes I am keeping it. I got annoyed with it over something and decided to sell. Glad I kept it now. It has been in the garage the last few months staying away from the wintry weather.
Getting it ready for the mot now. Can't wait to get it out now the weather is getting better.
Gave her a proper buffing today, never thought i'd enjoying cleaning so much, and this time I cleaned the tyres and put the door badges on (sadly not OE) :(
Nevertheless I stood back and admired, and took some pics. Can't wait to get her on the road :D

I haven't really done much to the 5 lately due to time constraints, but thought i'd update my thread with a few bits....
Spent an age getting the battery tray out to replace with a nice new one from CGB, decided to strip the interior and carpet out to get the to last bolts on the tray and waxoyl the crap outta the inner floor seams etc.....

Bit of an update on the thread, coilovers are fitted... Not too sure if I've gone too low though!

Lots of copper grease on the threads and cleaned and undersealed the arches while I was down there....

Coilover sits very close to the tyre, so have fitted some 5mm spacers.....

http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i404/MrCanonfire/Snapbucket/E30D9CAF.jpg
Then onto the torsion bars, was not looking forward to this at all, but used plenty of penetrant spray for few days before hand. Once I took the end caps off, one was really rusty:scratch:
But all was good, one shifted out easy and the other one I gave a good whack from the other side and it budged whilst I had the pressure on with the bolt and socket. Job done :agree:

Cheers for all the positive comments! I'll get a side on, at the moment it sits about 10mm lower on the front but still looks a little high compared to the rear as I guess the illusion of the rear arch being lower doesn't help

Top motor :niceone:
Well 7 long months later, I've dragged my backside back to the garage to start tidying up the engine bay and add some parts that i'd been collecting up over the past few months.
Have absolutely no idea what i'm doing engine wise really, so I am making use of the search facility on here and the Haynes manual is my new best friend. The motor was rebuilt shortly before I bought it and is not run in yet so hopefully I don't need to do much here (Although I want to put a 285 in)
Plan is to clean up the engine bay following the car being at the bodyshop, it was absolutely thick in grime and crud from the 6 months it was being worked on.
I'm removing as much as I can right back to the block and I am fitting:
Uprated starter motor
New water pump and housing (just for aesthetics admittedly)
Magnecor Leads
Blue silicone hose set
Mocal oil cooler w/braided lines
Alloy radiator
Front mount (still yet to purchase, need something to fit behind standard bumper/grill)
New air filter and housing
AEM AFR and downpipe
Boost gauge etc
GTT strut brace
and other stuff that's lurking in the garage that I can't think of........
Also planning to remove and rebuild the carb so I can change the jets for higher boost. I want to uprate the turbo sometime in the near future.
Just getting started:

Photos photos and more photos to remind u where things go. That's the mistake I made when I took my engine to bits and couldn't recall where it all went lol.

Bit of an update with the Raider.....
Slowly but surely working through it now my wedding and honeymoon is out of the way. Getting to point where I'm in need of technical assistance though as my limited knowledge has got me this far but I'm now getting stuck! SOS!
Fitted mocal, alloy rad, 90 degree cap and new arm, front mount etc
Was a seriously tight fit to get it all in, needed to move the alternator as far back as it would go so need to try and find a shorter belt somewhere.....
I've bought a carb off the bay to rebuild (I thought it made sense to have a spare In case I mess anything up) and need to buy a rebuild kit from the club shop and rejet the carb for 18psi ish, I've got an AFR to fit as well so hopefully soon it'll be on the road!
Got all parts to finish but still to do:
Rebuild and re jet carb
Replace starter motor
Fit new tie rods and wishbones/poly bushes
Fit AFR and boost gauge
Work out how to route breather system
Shorter alternator belt
Fit catch tank
Fit downpipe with bung
Find a bolt for turbo elbow
Strut brace and alloy carb elbow
Finish undersealing

All dusted off after the winter hibernation - I'm hoping it won't fail on too much considering most of it is new!

That looks lovely. Good luck with the MOT. Don't let them drive it onto the ramps.

Just read this thread from start to finish. Very impressed with it.
The right wheels and height transform it further.
Great looking car:agree:

Good luck, I hope she passes :)
Thanks for all of the comments!:agree:
Took the car for an MOT on Saturday, and it failed! :badone:
BUT it only failed on the battery clamp missing (I forgot to put it on), the horn not being loud enough, and he rear brake compensator seized. So I went home, bit of WD40 and tinkering, back down to MOT station.
Then it was a pass, not too bad considering it had been almost 4 years since the last one. Not to mention all of the work i had put into the car. :niceone:
Was so nice to drive the 5 even for just a short journey after all this time. I tickled it a little coming home though and piiiiles of blue smoke came out the back as it came on boost - and after that the car was trying to cut out and kangooring all the way home. So first port of call is a carb rebuild. Me ole mate Gary (Smithyr5GT) is going to help me out with this shortly. So hopefully will be out boosting in no time. Can't wait.
