View Full Version : no oil pressure when warm
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
hi folks!!! more problems with my 5!! when its cold and started i have around 20-25psi on my guage (i fitted one in the glove box mechanical type) then when you drive the car i would be lucky to get it up to 30psi no matter what the revs are!! then when the oil is warm the guage drops to the bottom and only lifts when you rev it but it only goes to max off 10psi i would say?? now i have a spare oil pump so is it the oil pump or is the pressure valve in the pump messing about i dont no. any help would be great! oh and the oil is only new and was doing this before i changed the oil and filter. cheers
What oil brand type did you use and viscoity? what oil filter did you use and was it a GTT one? Is the oil @ the correct level?
Could be a clogged oil pump pickup, if these are all fine I would check the clearances on the main bearing closest to the pump (this has the greatest effect on pressure) and clearances on the furthest rod bearing (this will show the greatest wear).
Has the engine got any oil leak's in the oil supply system this can cause low oil pressure, excessive clearances can also cause low oil pressure
Any knocking noise's or nasty noises from the engine yet?

it is a gtt filter and the oil is 10w40 its quantim. no oil leaks it does have a little rattle at about 2500 rpm and its only done 100 mile since rebuild hope this helps

Reading your 1st post on this again even 20-25psi on guage when cold is low, I have always seen around 45-50psi when engine cold @ idle and once warm it settles around 15psi and increases through the rev range over 3500rpm's on my C1J I used to see about 50psi

I would say it''s proably the wrong oil pump or the relief valve is stuck open.. If it's rattling it doesn't sound good tbh :(

Do not run the engine any more you are just causing more damage.I would get the sump off and find out whats going on.What sort of oil pump are you running?

its just the standard pump i have not moved the car since i fitted the guage and noticed this! i wil get the sump off and see what is going on! is it worth wile putting a washer on the oil pump relief just to see if that helps or not bother? thank again lol

Not worth messing with the oil pump. When engine was rebuilt did you have the cranck reground or did you just fit new main bearings:)
I had oil pressure problems with a dodgy oil filter once. Once changed it was OK ,I guess that if it's brand new it is unlikely. Mine might have got knocked, I don't know.
Did you bleed the turbo before starting the engine? If so did you get a good gush of oil from the return pipe? If not you can kill the turbo pretty quickly...trust me I noticed my turbo started quacking like a duck by that time it was too late.:crap:

just to let you all no that i got the oil pressure fault sorted i swaped the pump with one i had lying around the garage and it seems to have worked a treat. 45psi started cold then after a drive it sits around 20psi does that sound right??? thanks again

Readings are good :agree:, was it the relief valve is stuck open

Should be around 45 psi at 3k rpm when the engine is hot, if its 20psi at 3k rpm then something is a miss matey.
