Right!
I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid but I think the coils in my cylinder head are coil bound with my new cam. Did you fit uprated springs I hear you say , I pretty sure the head already had them as it was used in another car with a fairy wild can.

Does coil bound mean the whole spring is touching or can it be that say a spring that has 6coils has the bottom two and top two touching but a gap in the middle mean its ok?

I can't see your pictures, not sure if anyone else can?

Do the springs have any red marks on them, if they do they will most likely be standard ones.

What you need to do is measure the gaps when the spring is fully compressed I think you are looking for a total of at least 0.80mm gaps, (can't remember the figure exactly), as far as I know the coils should not be touching at all. Use a feeler gauge. There is some good info if you search "coilbound" in the boards search function.

if there's a gap between any of the coils then ur ok......if not then the tappet clearances are too small!

Thanks for the input. The Springs only have 6 coils I thinks and standard have 7 (no red paint).
All the springs are not touching when fully compressed so thanks to Michael I shall sleep well tonight:):agree:

Someone with a 285 cam might look at the piccies and think they look ok?

wha have you set the valve clearances to G?

Those adjusters look like they are on full stretch?!

I hear ya! I thought the same, assumed it was something to do with high lift? I think the gauge was at. 20 for both inlet & ex. Will check later.

Do people with piper 285 cams find that the adjusters are near the max on the tappets?

Yes! I have had to move the securing nut from the top of the rocker arm to the bottom. It gives me a bit more room when setting clearances

I have lower d where the spring sit on the cylinder head as on the the piper box it says fiting length 33 MM and they where 32mm

I used to leave the steel spring seats out to get the installed length up a bit. Probably not the best thing long term but it didn't ever look to have worn the casting when it came apart.

Yes common to have the adjusters at full stretch with a heavilly reground cam.

if you have a cam which has been reground from a standard item as many performance ones are then the adjusters will be wound quite a bit further out, most cam companies can produce a cam from a billet blank but will charge you a serious premium for doing so

I have just searched myself and you are correct, not much comes up, maybe I searched a different phrase, I did managed to find a fair bit of info.

Glad everythings ok in the end, you have a fair bit more clearance when those springs are fully compressed than i did. ;-)

I will have to try the ajuster idea as mine are also pretty much at the top of ajustment.
