well as you know i sold the peugeot which was an amazing daily and have no replaced it with a very impractical 2 seater convertible.. Purely because i felt id gone as far as i could with the peugeot and wanted to experiance somthing new.. After the mrs bought a mx5 i became very hooked, purely due to there cheap costs, amazing handling and fun factor, and i honestly cant think of other rwd car that fits in the same bracket.. soo... my search went for a mx5.

I came back with a Eunos ,S ltd (1-1000).
I was looking for a good canvas with solid enough bodywork but at a price which would leave plenty of cash for paint etc... what i got was an mx5 with the interior i wanted (brothel spec), and very rare ltd edition, very solid bodywork, and amazingly what is actually very good paint aswell... best of still.. i was left with plenty of change from the peugeot after buying it. Car has afresh 12 month mot and 3 months tax..

to say im happy is an understatment, there plenty of bits to keep me busy(, snapped aerial, dirty, snapped wingmirror , bashed centre console.. but nothing that cant be fixed pretty easilly.

Anyway pics begin.

Which Pug did you get rid of DJ? The 205 or the 306?

djinuk
08-08-2011, 13:44
the 306 matey :), 205's my first car so ill be keeping that a long while.. should be going in the bodyshop straight away my renault 5 so that little monster should be out.

As for the mx5 its really just going to be a bit of fun as my first rwd, probably just freshen it up lower it on some nice wheels and ducktail spoiler :D

Your first RWD? You'll love it! :D Other than my GTT's (and maybe my CRX), my two favourite cars over the years have been my 200sx and my current 323ise (which is MUCH safer, lol). RWD is ace. :agree:

I didn't realise you were getting rid of the 306. Did I miss a thread/post on here? I really quite liked it and was keeping an eye out in case you decided to sell. How much did you get for it in the end? :)

The pittings very bad on my rms , so i started with 80 grit.. although ill be honest im thinking maybe an 80 flap disk on a drill will be the answer.

managed to get hold of a pair of lotus elise mk1 buckets.. virtually no padding, but they give a great seating position , and hug you far far more than it looks like in the pic, only issue is that i managed to weld the passenger mount up on the piss twice.. after the second time i decided theres a reason im not a fabricator by trade and id let somebody better do it!.

I would have prefered them in black but i managed a straight swap for mine, which meant no cash required, which given current circumstances is a big bonus, may change them in the future though, or even redye them.

after fitting the prima alloys, i found when 'slidin' one side began to catch and pull.. therefor i though now would be a suitable time to give it a slight arch roll..

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/misc/IMG_2053.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/misc/IMG_2054.jpg

I also sprayed any cut edges with a good helping of stone chip, aswell as tin snipped the tabs off to remove any severe lips for crap to build up on.

Thing i will say is ive rolled quite a few arches and had no issues, but these things are horrible.. i think its because the outer arch is actually rounded rather than a flat so a dolly dosent really help other than flatten the arch.. Either way the paint was also pretty terrible and flaked at the first ounce of pressure..

I plan to paint the car , so im just going to fit the wheels, after rolling, then prep and repaint the whole car.

Speakin of wheels, i thought it appropiate

did one of the monthly maintence chores on the mazda today, the unblocking of the drain holes , to do so i had to remove the hardtop..

Somehow i then decided to tackle the tatty hardtop , although i planned to learn it till summer for some reason i felt the need to start it.. For those that dont know around the edge it had been badly chipped away and looked a mess, i used a dremel to carefully key up the areas , and began to build them back up, still quite a bit more work, but this is what i got done in just under2 hours today. The whole hardtop has terrible paint so ill wet flat it back to 800 , and give it all a fresh coat of paint.

stunning, we've got a bench polishing machine with two wheels like a grinder, im tempted to buy a set and refurb some, ive tried polishing things in the past but it took soooooooo long to get imperfections out, most would polish amazing but any scratch or corroded spot just took literally hours and still wouldnt go? how do you get larger imperfections out?

djinuk
31-12-2011, 23:52
I quite litrally do it all by hand pretty much..

My process is as follows.

Very carefull use of a grinder with flap wheel < 240 grit, im very carefull to keep it moving otherwise the alloy can melt causing more issues, I use this until all the pitting has gone, by the end my arms aching and im wishing i never started.

Then the next stage 80 or 120 grit sanding, this is mainly get to get the damage done by the flap disc out, as the lip will no longer be round but instead a serious of gouges etc (hopefully not to many, this stage takes a long longe time , and you need to go until theres no deep marks seft by the flap wheel.

From then on the work gets easier and faster, but i just repeat using wet and dry.

240 > 320 > 400 > 600 >800, it gets easier the further you go, also i setup a matt and bucket and water and do it in front of the tv, its a labour of love and each night my hands and arms are black.

http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/acatalog/Standard_Polishing_Kits.html#a30

Then i use the top polishing kit in the above link ( the £10 one) on a drill, a bench mounted one would be far easier but unfortunatly i have no where to mount it, i then give them a run over with hd metal polish but i may invest in some 'mothers polish' which is meant to be great and generally what all the guys in the states use.

Basically its a long process, but somthing that can be done in front of the tv, i just give it about 45 mins a night, and that way its not to much of a chore.

check back to post number 13 onwards and you will see the stages a bit beter , other than the flap disc as i didn work that out until the second rim.

ill play with the height, camber and stance, smoke the front side lights, and then ill just repaint the whole thing black so its super fresh, that can wait till summer though, plan to blast it out in a week or so, cant let the good weather go to waste :(.

Nice work.

DJ, what would you use to take over-spray off paintwork, trim/plastics and glass?

We took my Mrs' Focus to a place for some body repairs a few months ago. The repairs they did were cheap but the result was pretty good for the price tbh. However, after I got home I realised they'd been sloppy with the paint and there's over-spray on the back end of the car.

I don't want to risk using anything too abrasive to get it off. Any thoughts?

djinuk
02-01-2012, 15:10
try a clay bar and some detailer matey, so long as its not bonded to the paint to well that should shift it off the plastics and paintwork.

http://www.rollupandshine.com/roll-up--shine-heavy-grade-soft-clay-bar-192-p.asp

that product looks ideal, quick detailers about £6 from halfords, meguairs stuff, good stuff to have around aswell, ideal for inbetween washers.

Bily Hamber clay is my personal favourite. It's a lot cheaper per gram, and is designed to only need water for lube. You can mix a bit of shampoo in to make it more slippery if you want to.

It's the only clay I'll ever use now :agree:

not the best day today, the mrs helped me out in painting the hardtop.

Masked up,

Applied high build primer, then a couple of areas blisteered up, i sanded these back and it all the way back through the original silver the hardtop once was. I filled these with top stop, reapplied high build , and flatted this all back to 800

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/misc/IMG_2639.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/misc/IMG_2640.jpg

I then applied basecoat black in a 2:1 ratio as per morleys, however no matter what i did this was going on with a terrible orange peel, air pressure was fine etc, to top it off, when i applied the basecoat , once again 2 areas of the roof had a blister, once again this is all the way back to the very original silver coat.

All i can think is that the original paint was cellulose and the thinners are reactivating it, although this is just a guess.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/misc/IMG_2642.jpghttp://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/misc/IMG_2645.jpghttp://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/misc/IMG_2646.jpg

Plan is to flat all the orange peel back, dig out the blisters and filler the whole, and then go again with a 1:1 ratio on the basecoat. (although i did confirm with my friend who said morelys basecoats are 2:1 so im really not sure.

Enough orange peel there to make a whole lot of marmalade

djinuk
09-01-2012, 14:45
tell me about it, although the photo does make it look a bit worse than it really is.

Ive confirmed im using the correct mixing ratio for the paint with morelys.

Plan is to use barcoat on the whole roof to avoid any more blisters/reactions, high build the whole roof, flat the whole roof, and then try repainting with a diffrent air regulator.. if its still terrible im going to mix the basecoat to a 1:1 ratio and see how it goes..

the only thing i knew about painting was from this experience, too much pressure caused my orange peel.

djinuk
18-01-2012, 07:56
worked out the reaction is cellulose, and the orange peel is wrong mixing of basecoat, should of been 1:1 :(.. ah well.

If you paint something like that again with shady areas such as burn throughs to other colours, primer edges etc make sure you dust these areas really carefully first and then blowing air inbetween dust coats to dry the solven quicker, it less likly to cause you trouble as there is less solvent on the panel which is what causes problems.

djinuk
18-01-2012, 22:20
cheers man, i do always attack the dodgy areas first, however with the paint being mixed 2:1 is just wasnt right, and really i should of just stopped there and questioned it before hammering more on, ah well, we learn from mistakes dont we :coffee:.. (never take paint advice/mixing ratios from the suppliers as i dont think they know there arse from elbow)

Too true mate, sometimes you end up just going with what feels right, get the base and thinners in a paint cup and just play with it with a paint stick, in the end you can feel what is right, with solid stuff like clears etc it's best to check it with a din cup to have the viscosity bang on, this way you are taking the ambient temp in to consideration.

forked out for the rear lip that i love on my gfs mx5.. omg it was expensive.. worst still its only a snotty bit of fibreglass.. however ive recieved it.. if im honest im not really that pleased..

Its been painting like like a matt black paint.. they havnt even got the edges these are still white.. i mean on a splitter thats £120, you would expect to have at least the crappy edges painting.. with that point in mind im not entirely happy with it being matt black as it will just stain and look crap very quick... :( really not sure what to do, not happy with the quality in all honesty, but maybe im just picky.. problem is there isnt much choice as i cant find anybody else selling these.

guess ill just have to live with it :(

just an update , gv lip fitted, 527's fitted, also got rsandy to come up as i was getting pissed off with the hardtop , wanted to check i wasnt doing anything silly as ive never had so much issue painting, , surely enough he also found it was lifting.

We put it down to a porous gelcoat over the fibreglass which didnt like heat very much and as such avoided heat as much as possible.

still need to give it a flat and polish as quite a lot of dust dropped in it but still.

Badass on the black wheels dude, re the din cup just dip it in to the paint you are mixing and then record the time it takes for all of the liquid to run through it, more thinners less time= flatter finish and possibly more hangers. Most paints have the info on the side of the can at how many seconds it should be mixed up at, I used to paint clear at around 13-14 seconds like pi$$
