Ok so managed to get hold of some 'new old stock' MXVs recently and after fitting them last week we took the 5 out for a spin. Although the previous Uniroyal tyres were pretty authentic from BITD, I always felt that the motor needed MXVs for total OEness. The old man used to bang on about them 20+ years ago and I must admit after a few white-knuckle twists an' turns on some Essex B-roads on Saturday, I have to say they're pretty decent [you also feel every stone on the road so comfortable the ride ain't :crap:]

Took a few nice piccies in the sunshine for the OE connoisseur

looking really nice,
oe is the way to keep these cars going and to be around in years to come,i know not everyone will agree with that statement,i also have a set of mxv's but i keep them on a spare set of alloys as i dont want to run them down, sad i know but there wont be any left before long.
I also feel their more grippy than my uniroyals:agree:

Wow, that really is period from top to bottom!

Is there anything on the car that isn't OE? I certainly can't see anything from the outside :)

It's completely standard throughout... I even snagged a period 1990 AA map book on eBay to keep in the cockpit

Cheers for the compliments guys :)

I was seriously considering putting the MXVs deep into the depths of the garage and keeping them for the distant future.... but then I thought funk it and shhhlapped them on some refurbed Speedlines I had knocking around. I figured they're going to last at least 10,000 miles which should be quite a while at the rate I'm adding mileage.

Matt is it four Phase I alloys you have? Mate they would blinding with a new old stock set of MXVs!! I'd be tempted to fit just one and have it on display somewhere in the house!! I had one of those Phase II alloys chillin' in the living room until I fitted it to the car the other day. My missus just didn't get it but I thought it looked pretty rad

Lovely motor mate.

I've always preferred MXV's over Uniroyals. MXV's are very progressive on the limit so make the car far more enjoyable on the twisty stuff (wet or dry). The Uniroyals seemed to offer less feedback through the wheel and were a bit on/off in the wet.

Isn't it somehow possible to make a group order fot the MXVs?
I think Unirolay and Semperit is not for the GTT.

Car is amazing!!!

I think Michelin stopped making the MXV in the early/mid nineties; they were replaced by the Michelin Pilot [and Michelin did not make the Pilot in the correct size to fit the standard alloy]. Uniroyal then took over as the standard tyre for the GTT with the 340 which was a decent substitute but not quite as gripE as the MXV. Woznaldo summed it up perfectly with the MXV/Uniroyal comparison :)

yeh i agree mxv are much better but as its now 2011 and even trying get a uniroyal can be pretty tricky :(the chance of getting mxvs now will be pretty hard so the next best thing will be uniroyale.i just had a puncher on the mxv and the trye was shot and could not get repaired.so uniroyal it was.
as for the driving in the wet id not take the chance at all and even in the corners i did find out for myself:eek:

lets not forget they might not be the best but least it keeps the 5 on the road :agree:
