Right guys, bought some 2nd hand (new) GAZ coilovers.

Just looking at how to assemble them as they dont come with all the bits I need.

Heres a pic of the bits I have, some are spares off an old set of AVO's but they don't use the std top cap bearing....

http://www.rtoc.org/files/Technical%20Files/Ashy%20172%20turbo/The%20Rebuild%202010%20-%202011/Body%20Work/IMAG0169.jpg

Does anyone have any advice or better still photo's of how they built theirs up?

Cheers Ashy.

Ashy,

I have had a number of issues with top mounts over the years, ill upload some pics of my current set up, using helper springs and showing the new conical shaped top hats i got direct from avo, this way all the shocks load is transmitted through the spherical bearings.

I found that the coilovers never felt right with the standard top hats, and i get lots more feedback from the tyres with this setup. The springs (275lb) are very harsh for the road though, going to go a bit softer for the more broken tarmac at the next few events.

these springs are marked up 220lbs so don't know what they'll be like as i'm a bit heavier up front.

The std GAZ spring retainer looks different to th AVO one (I guess thats the one ur using, more conical in shape)

There is a picture in the Haynes manual of the shock in exploded view with all the parts in the right order I struggled to put mine together but the pic helped

this is how mine are made up ive the black spring seat which has that round spacer on top, that got a bearing built into it which then sits on top of my lower rubber dounut seat

Russel,

unless i'm looking at the pics upside down, your shocks look to be wrong? Not that i'm an expert, but all the load is central and not over the spring if that makes sense?

The black 'cup' needs seating into something, perhaps the doughnut?

I could be wrong but i wouldn't be happy with them on my car.

If your using the original top mount setup Ashy, id imagine it will go bearing straight on top of the collar that fits on top of the spring > top hat > rubber donut > top mount then the cup in from the top. Helper springs might be needed to keep the lot together.

If your wondering about the gaps in the spring and the black cup I've pulled the shocker up to see it all separated but yes I wasn't sure if that's correct but I honestly couldn't built them up any other way, there off the car so now is the time to change it but from what was supplied all I could see is that you replace your standard bearing with the gaz one that's built in to the black cup which is attached to the spacer then the top hat for the donut sits on the spacer? some one ring GAZ lol

Looks similar to my spax setup with a black collar sat on top of the spring. I fitted standard assembly on top minus the original coil spring retainer/cap.

Like this..

or when I tried fitting adjustable top mounts I bought some small top spring cap things, on the left

Right just to confirm guys are phase 2 hubs different to phase 1's? As my phase 1 coilovers are on and the tyres are now rubbing on the springs and adjusters.

Are you suspension holes that go to the hubs above each other or angled?

Ph2 offset, ph1 in-line.....have a search on here to double check, are your lower arms defo gt items and also ph 1 top mounts will fit either way unlike the offset ph2 top mounts, my problem was I had valver hubs and shafts so had ph1 top mounts on ph2 coil overs on clio hubs and lower arms

Got it all sorted, was fairly simple once I took a std shocker appart and had a look. Loads better than the old AVO's I have.

All the bits laid out.
