View Full Version : 172 turbo project
I bought my phase 2 renault 5 gt turbo around a year ago now, not long after i bought it the turbo blew, then piston rings and liners went so i decided not to fix it and go for the 172 lump  the car will be used for track and road use haha if the insurance will touch me, the progress has been rather slow as i have only got a part time job, will keep this thread updated as i go along.
will defo need some advice and tips if any1 has done this conversion b4 as this is me first conversion, i have had a load ov advice of James5 thanks alot :D
here are a few pics of how it looked when i bought the car.
then i started taking the engine and all the interior just so it was a rolling shell :)
i sanded down the engine bay and subframe and sent them of to get sprayed.
just a few bits of sprayin while i waited for a few parts and saved up for me new engine :)
then me gaz coilovers, front and rear disks were fitted and intercooler bolted on ;)
finally bought me 172 engine with 55 thousand miles, with uprated clutch and gearbox with full rebuild ;)
sum pics ov me new engine, clutch and paint job
so i got me engine crane, plastic windows and 2 cobra buckets and got to work first i put the windows and buckets in place while i waited for the crane to arrive.
also the petrol lines and brake lines were all removed as they were rusty and also go trid ov the petrol tank :)
engine finally in, just waiting for me turbo manifold, heat plate and oil cooler.
also savin for me forged pistons, liners, conrods and rings ( Were is the best place to get a complete set and can you get different Compression ratio s ? ) also were could i get them all fitted ?

What front engine mount did you use?
i just used the r5 turbo 1 redrilled for the minute but i am still on the search for a gtx one i have been looking for nearly 2 months now and renault dealers dont stock them any more :crap:

Try here for the rods and pistons. Block needs boring if you don't use std size as no liners and I think PEC do MLS head gaskets as well for the 172 engine.

Thats a shame as I bought a GTX one for my F7R conversion about 3 years ago. Was only £18 new from Renault.

Renault have sold out of those mounts a little while ago, more than likely down to how many people are doing this type of conversion now
ok mate thanks alot i will need to do alot ov saving haha o well i new it was gona take along time, just hope it will be worth it :D
im gona leave all the engine work to a specialist coz i dnt have a clue :ashamed:
o yeh do you just use the clio 172 throttle cable and clutch cable ?
Bruce - BHPerformance
29-06-2011, 15:49
I used a std 5GTT cable for both if memory serves me correctly.
Engine Dynamics do fully built turbo engines for the 172.

Nice work Wozzer! :niceone:
thanks alot cables orderd :agree:
o yeh wot silcone hose do i use or wud i have 2 get them made ?

I used a clio 16v radiator and oil cooler so used std pipework from 19 16v, GTT and Megane 16v that I had lying around the garage.
thanks alot cables orderd :agree:

What radiator are you going to be using? you can use the 172 rad if you have it if not go down the clio 16v / williams radiator route and a large slimline fan as they will fit in place ok you will need to make a couple of support bracket's for the rad itself, you will need to extend the 172 hoses to the heater matrix but some simple joiners and straight pipe will do the job nicely. I used a mixture of my R5 GTT pipes and 172 pipework for my setup.
will be using the 172 rad and slimline fan :) looks like i will have 2 buy a set of 172 hoses and r5 hoses and just have a play ;)
turbo manifold shud be here 2moz or tuesday so will get sum pics with the turbo in place, just hope there is enought space for the exhaust and hoses that come of the turbo :crap:
here are some pics with me manifold and turbo on, the only problem is that the turbo is in the wrong place
wot do u reckon i can do ???
mite just leave it like this then connect everything else up then take it 2 a specialist to do the internals and sort the turbo out lol

Do you mean the front of the turbo outlet is pointing the wrong way? You know you can rotate the front of the turbo by undoing the bolts that sit on th back of that near where the oil feed goes.
When you say in wrong place do you mean the turbo housing's? if so you will have to do what we did with the F7p turbo's and rotate the exhaust and compressor housing's so it would fit properly keeping the core with the feed at the top. You may need to drill and tap the rear of your compressor housing to fit the actuator in a new location on it:agree:
Looking good though, I wonder if you could get away with using the Clio phase 1 turbo downpipe like me and Steve use on our F7p turbo conversion
http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2726&appid=1
Just stole the downpipe pic from Steve's project thread on www.renault5gtturbo.com (http://www.renault5gtturbo.com)
I know that myself and Steve are doing the F7p conversion's but your turbo must sit in a very similar location to our's, I would have thought this would be ok fo you to use. You can pick them up 2nd hand on the clio 16v valver forum for around £150.00
The pictures are from Steve aka 5teveL's project and he is using the K-Tec downpipe as seen in this pic I am using the BBPT version of the downpipe basically same thing although i had to modify one of my holes to fit my T28 properly.

hya james no the housin is in the corect place :) its just the turbo if u look at the pics above the pipe that comes of the turbo to the intercooler is gona hit the bulk head :crap:
thanks for them pics that downpipe looks mint,

I think the downpipe will work for you aswell:agree:
Yeah you just need to rotate the compressor housing so it sits nicely, as said you will also need to remove actuator to do this then drill and tap the rear of the comp housing to enable bolts to secure actuator bracket in place once you have got the housing location done. you will prob have to have the outlet facing upwards:agree:
Mine is the same you can see my top outlet pipe just in this pic of my bay
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.php?albumid=1381&pictureid=16498
ok mate how hard is it 2 rotate the compresser unit ?
ur engine is lookin mint now wot bhp are u looking at ? :wasntme:
ok mate how hard is it 2 rotate the compresser unit ?
ur engine is lookin mint now wot bhp are u looking at ? :wasntme:
To rotate the compressor housing you will need to first take of the actuator, then undo the bolts at the rear of the front compressor housing just slightly lossen them all and you should be able to rotate the housing quite easily and then just nip the bolts back up again once the position is found, as said the actuator bracket will now need to be located in a different place, i would mark were it needs to go on the compressor housing and then fully remove the front housing and drill out to the correct size thread prob be an M6 or something along those lines to secure it, also leave the old actuator bolts in there holes as they may go straight through the housing and then leak boost otherwise.
My engine is ok present bhp is 0, but when running would be nice to see around 250ish out of it.
thanks for the advice i have managed 2 rotate it and fits ok ;)
got a few pics and 1 pic ov the space for the down pipe :)
Looking good matey I take it your going to have a 90 deg silicone bend straight of it :agree:
no need to thank for advice matey if I can help I will, shame your not down south would have given you hand with the conversion:agree:
yeh i wish u cud help me but im in no rush lol so just gona do bits when i get the chance haha o yeh u no u sed use the yellow cozzy injectors http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-COSWORTH-COSSY-2WD-RECON-INJECTORS-YELLOW-IW-025-/180690072150?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a11f7b256
are they the right 1ns and wot difference wud it make if i wanted to uprate them to the 803 s ??
i was just wondering if this is the volvo fuel rail wich is used, so can put bigger injectors in ??
Yeah that looks Like the one Volvo t5 jobbie. Check out ashys profile he has photos that shows his mods. You need to move the rail more to the left as your covering thermostat inlet connection. You need to block / get someone to alloy weld the 5th hole :)
rad and fan have turned up, so fitted these this mornin and also found a new place for the brake pot :)
Looking good matey, coming on nicely you thought about air filter location yet?? I have mine placed in the passenger side scuttle area, I drilled a 63mm hole through the scuttle area and just ran some pipe up. Battery then re-located to the drivers side scuttle area:agree:
Give's you something else to do aswell now:agree::D
haha yeh i have been thinking to put it over the front passengers side arch,
and the battery in the boot with the petrol tank ?
just waiting for the injectors ( 803s )
o yeh i went down to me local welder this mornin and he said he could block the hole of on the fuel rail but is there any other way coz he said it mite be risky ? e.g he could put a plug init then weld around the top ?

Best of speaking with Nial aka Ashy as he had to modify his the same.
Will a clio PH1 fuel rail not fit the injectors? as it'll save a right fcuk on and the mounting bolts etc will line straight up?
Will a clio PH1 fuel rail not fit the injectors? as it'll save a right fcuk on and the mounting bolts etc will line straight up?
Feck your right the clio phase 1 rail will why didn't i think of that as I use it on mine with the Bosch injectors.
iv tryed to upload more photos ov wot i have bin up 2 but they wont load for sum reason :crap:
anyway iv plumbd all the engine in e.g rad and coolent pipes, welded me volvo fuel rail, located me airfilter were the battery would ov bin, bought me phase 1 carb and fitted, fitted clutch cable and throttle cable also fitted me heat wrappd exhaust.
just orderd some 803s and pistons of ASHY :agree:
also how hard is it 2 weld a plate for the top engine mount ??
Warren, Ashy cut the top engine mount bracket out of a Mk1 clio shell I think it was and welded it into his 5:agree: You will need to relocate the brake fluid resevoir. I know Ashy has loads of pic's on profile take a peak:agree:
Sounds like progress is coming on quick shame about upload of pic's:cry:
sorry for no updates iv not been able to upload anything for ages :sad2:

Nice :)
How much you payed for the conrods and the pistons ?
Great engine project should make some nice power once built
pistons of ashy i think for £80 and conrods were £235 posted of a man on ebay than had them in his clio turbo for 80miles  but look all good to me basicly brand new ;)
Yeah the pistons were Ashy's old ones I put you on to him about them need him to let you know how much he skimmed them down by so can work out the compression you engine will be. Project seems to be coming on nicely keep the pic's flowing Warren i love a good pic:D
quick update i have just started stripping down my engine so i can do all the engine work needed for the 172 turbo conversion, this is my first ever build so will put pics up so u guys can help me when i get stuck
also if i really do get fed up with the messing about or get confused does anyone no anywere i could get the car trailered so a pofesional can finish ?

:)
Lovely stuff.
Only one thing, I wouldn't have an un-covered lead acid battery in the cabin with me....just in case of an accident, it could be a bit "burn-y", I'm guessing with your attention to detail on the other bits, which is making me jealous (why does everyone have a more tidy work area than me!!) it's going inside a box.

big thanks to HAZ for doing alot ov work on my car its looking mint now not long to fire it up and run the engine in ;)
car looks awsome:cool:

Looking great mate! Where you on skimmed jobbies or fully forged?
Eager to see results!
hya mate just skimmed at the minute untill i can afford some forged ones also the turbo and manifold arnt the best so im not gona get massive power but around 230bhp but we will see after i come of me holidays in 3 weeks cant wait :D
hahahaha yeah she doesnt find me car all exciting at the minute but when i get her strapped in and bootin it around oulton park she might get to like it :wasntme:
Tony Walker
24-08-2012, 14:16
There's cheap oulton park days Nov Dec I'm going to try get to one let me know if your planning on going, Alex may be joining me too.
okay mate yeah sure as long as i can get insured and get it mot d and taxed will defo do some me mate got an evo 9 so he will be joining us aswel :agree:
well been told today me car is finally ready to start up and on the dyno on thursday for the base map so getting it picked up from scoffs this sunday defo gona stay around and watch all the other rtoc members cars on the RR day ;)
then needs MOT , TAX and insurance so i can run the new engine in need to do 500 miles and its gone be very hard not to go over the 3000 revs :crap: but will be defo worth it, then back to scoffs for full map and see how much power its running :wasntme:
back home and running :wasntme:
Warren well done matey, is she road legal now?

looks :smokin:
That looks fantastic mate nice one :smokin:
thanks alot just needs some little touches up like :
clutch cable snapped getting me car on the truck :crap:
front headlights - when using sidelights only the right hand one works but when u turn on to main beam the right one goes onto full beem and the left one goes onto main beam :crap:
need some window wipers for the front and cut me bumper propperly this time hahaha
really happy with the work that haz and scoff put into this car for me just cant wait get me mot and tax then its finding insurance
Are you missing a side repeater as I have one in the top of my box. Can drop it off sat eve if so. I also have a spare clutch cable which you can have too if your not going to buy new.
Regards the lights, I'm thinking its the light stalk as I think it was a campus one do start with that.
Does the bumper not fit on as I assumed where you mounted the cooler it would be ok? If so its worth keeping the bumper as it is.
Also remember the front brake flexi's ;)
okay mate yeah got a few side repeaters here so thats all good and iv ordered the clutch cable which is coming tomorrow morning :) the bumper just needs the bottom under lip cutting back about an inch or so just so the intercooler will fit propperly not alot of cutting is need to be fair :)
im just gona clean it up abit then will start with the lights and the flexis just waiting for a decent day ov weather haha

Love this car! I seen it at EFI rr day, really cool! Not sure about the green tho! But each to there own!
cheers mate cant wait get it on the road now :) i like the green makes the cage stand out i was gona do it white or black but thats just boaring so thought id be different :agree:
i like the green, but as mines grey and orange i dont think my opinion counts!
bit different to the norm and as its for track use why not. suprised you haven't gone for green graphics too. mine started out like this
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f339/nocturnaldevelopments/renault%205%20campus/524647ae.jpg
then changed it to this before painting it grey/orange
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f339/nocturnaldevelopments/renault%205%20campus/campusgraphics.jpg
each to their own i guess :)
I liked it the way it was to start with Haz! :D
I like all 3 versions but when I saw the campus pics again it makes me want another sleeper, I'd have to find another with no side plastics but with a different set of wheels though!
well happy with the final project just need to go threw the loom behind the dash as the front headlights arnt working ;)

What size wheels and tyres are them matey?
ph1 r19 16v wheels, 15`s :)
:agree: 195/50/r15s the tyres are leatherin the arch at the min just trying to find someone that can extend me arches but an inch or so
Wouldn't it be cheaper, quicker and less hassle to fit 195/45's?
I nearly said previously that the tyres looked to be 50 profile and that the wheels seem to be further out into the arches than normal (as they are only 6.5j and don't usually cause issues). I had wondered if you had spacers or a Williams wide-track conversion??
hya mate yeah i surpose it would be alot cheeper to fit 45s and iv got 406 brembo 4pots so had to use 25mm spacers thats why the wheels are further out :crap: haz is looking threw me loom soon so once thats done im asking him to make me wider arches like the ones on glenns 5 think it makes them look better aswell as clearing me tyres ;)
before i bought new wider arches i thought id have a crack at it myself ;)
also cut away the thin lip on the arches
Warren project is looking good, is that pipe feeding the tank ok for usage with fuel?? love the idea though :agree:
I have been thinking about some perspex rear quarters with Naca duct's for air flow into the rear engine making some special holes into the rear side cover's:D
looks like it, i would be a little worried!!! although i cant talk myself having slapped a fuel cell in the front end:ashamed:, anyway is there a non return type valve/flap built into that neck of the cell, i wouldnt like to have a roll in it if not or a hard shunt, that fuel will be going everywhere:scared: that tubing is'nt rated for fuel either:(, dont want to be negative or picky, but it looks a little unsafe, tnt ross did something along these lines, but used alloy pipe instead:),
just my 5 pence worth on whats so far been a great build:cool:
Yeah when I was putting it all together I was thinking the exact same thing tbh i was just messing about with a few pipes n stuff to see how I could do it :/ iv not looked into it properly and wanted to find the proper way ov doing it :/
Phew, I'm glad someone brought that up!
i no glad i put the pictures up really :) so whats the best way to do what i am trying to do ? i carnt find any pictures or parts :crap: thanks alot guys great help

merlin motorsports do fuel proof bends
http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/FUEL-CAPS-Filler-Hose-&-Bends/c22_153/index.html
and a length of alloy pipe to do the run between fuel cell and window, with swagged ends;) if you want something close to what youve got already:)
you will also need a breather pipe of your cell, if you havent already got one;)
does your cell have a built in swirl pot /bowl at the bottom where it draws the fuel from?
if not you may need to fit an idependant swirl pot to the system, if you are intending to do any cornering or heavy breaking etc ie track time;)
Arrr thanks alot mate great help :) I could just buy a length ov fuel proof tubing and slide it down that red one for looks ;) I'm still not sure about the valve tho because the fuel tank is open so will splash :/ iv got a swirl pot but is not a built in one

What's wrong with the original tank?
The tank that I have got there is nothing wrong with but because iv put the fuel pipe up to the window I need a fuel one way valve to stop the petrol cumming out ov the tank and also need a new tube because the one iv got isnt for petrol
finally passed MOT :D so propper happy about that the only problems that i am having now is when im driving in the day with no lights on everything is fine until i press me brake then me indercaters dont work and me rear left brake works but me right rear indercater lights up :crap:
then when im driving at night all me lights work but me right indercater doesnt and just makes a buzzing sound from the relay :crap: also when i press me brake me dash lights all go off until i let me foot of the brake then they all come back on
as well as them problems a soon as i turn me lights on or press me brake me rev need just sitts at the bottom
anyone no what could be the matter ? maybe a new relay or new clocks or bad earth ?
thanks alot

Cheers phil loved the drive home shame about the weather now looking for insurance that's gona be a pain :/
Nice result.
What's happening between 3400rpm and 4600rpm, looks a little choppy to the uninitiated (i.e. like me)?
great result mate! will go like crazy in such a light car :D
Yeah it does fly really pleased in the results we had trouble with the boost it was over boosting at first then messed around for a little then the boost started dropping of :/ I'm not to sure about the graph don't quite understand it lmao always learning ;)
Nice result.

I didn't bother to filter the result, it's quite normal. Unfortunately that operation isn't automatic in my dyno like it is in a dyno dynamics or some other RR. It picks up every little fluctuation and amplifies it - the smallest bit of wheel slip or movement under load. Its very annoying but actually very usefull while tuning - it's so sensitive that I can see the beginnings of a misfire, etc. I do wish I could do away with that sensitivity though. It would stop just about everyone asking the same question :)
Lol. Apologies Chris.
I have seen graphs of yours that don't have those sensitivities so I assume the others have had the filter applied. :) :agree:

Had a problem with me coolant the other day it just kept disappearing with no leeks wot so ever and the oil had no coolant in it :/ so I decided to drop the coolant today and the coolant has oil in it does this mean head gasket or cracked head ? Iv flushed the coolant system out now and gona try again to see if oil is in the coolant once again any ideas ? Thanks a lot
Tony Walker
13-06-2013, 11:47
theres a housing on the passenger side of the head that has a gasket keeping oil/water seperate, ive seen these leak before now.
Arrrr right I shall give that the once over tonight after work glad iv booked a week of work now I can properly sort it out ready for blyton :) cheers
Is it the tuner gasket under the inlet ?

the coolant housing on the passenger side of the head, the thermostat bolts to it too I think.
Alright tony iv bleed the coolant properly now because when I last did the coolant I just empted it then poored coolant in the tank I didn't realise there was the bleed screw on the housing your on about would an air bubble ov coursed loss of coolant ? Iv flushed it loads of times today and there is no oil in it bit iv still not started the car
Tony Walker
13-06-2013, 20:07
yeah the coolant could of dropped as the system bled a bit.
I'm hoping this has sorted it I'm gona leave it for tonyt and check tomorrow to see if the level is the same then if it is I will fire it up and leave it to run for a little
Epic build mate,
as for the leak if there is oil in the coolant the gasket of the heatexchanger could be worn out
this is a labyrinth where the coolant and oil are seperated with a simpel gasket, if this wears out
the highest pressure system will leak trough to the lowest so oil to coolant
it is mounted at the gearboxside on the head the block with the thermostat etc,..
If you remove it please drain the coolant first else you will have coolant flowing in the oil systen as soon as you take the exchanger off
Okay mate thanks a lot :) I drained the coolant and blead it with water a few times then started it up the water didnt drop and also had no signs of oil in it :) so I blead it again and put some coolant in it now it seems to be fine (touch wood) do you think it's because last time I renewed the coolant I didn't realise there was a bleed screw and could of had a massive air lock in the system. ?
then it could be just some air in the system, thats way better to solve
my advise is to fill the car wit coolant de-air let it run till the fan kicks in no cap on the coolant pot
cool down reset level, cap on ready
I'm hoping this has solved the problem gona go for a drive today
Thinking of selling my 172 turbo as I need a bigger car with all seats thinking Clio trophy :/ gona be gutted to see it go but im stuck on how much i should I put it up for ? Can anyone help cheers

Always difficult to price a modified 5 as they only appeal to certain peeps as you have the OE peeps and then the modified peeps clearly I am a modified man but do love the look of OE. You may find removing all the stickers and having an OE look would help to sell it but then someone may love it with all the decals on. Price wise £4k+ if bodywork is pretty good and rust free.
Worst case you may find breaking the car get's you the money you are after :agree: not that you want to break the car but to get the cash it maybe the only option unfortunatly.
Okay mate may aswell keep it and enjoy it I don't even wanna sell it just need something with 5 seats might even buy a standard renault 5 and use this one for track days :) cheers for the info James

Finally found my coolant problem today :) pulled up at my girlfriends house and checked the coolant level it was fine but I could here a little hissing noise so looked around and i found a small crack in the coolant pipe leading into the turbo but wasn't making a pool of coolant on the floor because it was dropping on the down pipe So it was been burnt away :) good job I noticed before I set of to blyton :)
wozzer
