Steering!

My 5 failed the MOT on excessive play on the steering rack there's a clonking when turning the MOT tester said it's the ball joint under the boot I tried changing this ball joint with no success but the clonking isnt coming from this part it's coming from inside the rack itself any ideas guys

you can shim the rack but for the price a new/recon one costs i wouldnt bother as it has to come out anyway so you aren't saving any work, sure the last one i had was about £40

I looked on cgb and racks are £70 where did you find one for £40 ...thanks for the replies lads

It was either an eBay seller or my local motorfactors, pretty sure it was eBay.
Have you searched on there

I was lucky when buying my steering rack as I had the last one in stock from renault main dealers did cost £400 odd I think this is some time ago don't no if they are available sill or dis now or as to what cost they are now days :eek:

Google and eBay, 40 squid new. Make sure you get the right one though as they have a habit of posting campus ones (Gt are quicker racks)...
