Ok this may be a bit noddy for some of you but for those who have an intermittent heater and struggle getting the thing to work this may sort out your problem.
If you can remove the heater control panel from the dash itself the small wheel which controls fan speed can be removed. From behind the panel unplug the 4 pin connector on the wheel assembly and pry the retaining clip to allow the wheel to be pushed through the back of the dash.

The wheel assembly itself just splits in half, pry the retaining tabs on each side and it comes apart easy, it should be pretty obvious.
Once in half you can see the contact points and oxidation/burn marks or whatever the technical term is. Just give all the contact faces a clean with some emery/sand paper or something you deem appropriate and voilą your heater 'should' now work.

Just for reference the yellow wire going to 4 pin plug is the supply for the fan so if it is not live then your fault is elsewhere.
