Well done glenn, a lot of hard work paying off. 10's arn't far away :)
The best of it is, that is with half the amount of nitrous it ran last year ! The new engine is performing better than we could have hoped for.

Well done fella, that's f'ing quick!
Today would have been an eye opening day for the C1J lovers out there. Glenn put in a fantastic launch in qualifying with a little more power than yesterday making a 1.6 60' and 103mph at the 1/8 only to drop a valve flat shifting from 3rd to 4th :crap: That would almost certainly have been a 10 second pass. What were the chances of that. It's never dropped a valve before and to do it on such a potentially great pass is a kick in the arse. But, if I know glenn, a buggered valve won't get in his way.
Check out the video. It's only qualifying so pay no attention to the reaction time. He's racing James hodson, ex UK FWD champion, mid 10sec 20v turbo + nitrous car. Watch glenn real him in mid track!! James ran a 10.9 on that run and glenn was making ground on him, so maybe a 10.8 might have been on the cards.

:( What a pisser! Pesky valve collets:crap:
Matt@CodeRedMotorsports
15-05-2011, 22:23
**** luck!!:crap:
Scoff, where did the valve fail at the collet end or the head end?
Dunno matt, he's not pulled it in bits yet. As rob says, should be worth measuring incase it's trying to pull the heads off the other valves too.
Markey Mark (BD)
15-05-2011, 22:23
Thats real shame, did watch that vid and realise he wasn't only staying with James but actually powering past him, can spot when valve drop happened too which is real downer as did look like the magic run. ;)
Good going anyway lads, looks like the new spec is certainly working in the right direction. :)
Any ideas as to why it dropped?
Adey aka Ewok
15-05-2011, 22:23
**** times, is it an easy fix as in stock valves and head or is all that lot custom?
is this with your old cam scoff? thats frustratingly close. incredible!!!:agree:
Yes, the old cam from my last C1J. That and a couple of other engine changes have really made it breath.
**** times, is it an easy fix as in stock valves and head or is all that lot custom?
Nah, fancy valves but they're available singular so it's not the end of the world. Hoping his head is OK, that won't be easy to replace. Piston probably fubar also.
Any ideas as to why it dropped?
Dunno mark. rev limit is something like 8400rpm so it'll have been on that during the shift. It might want stronger springs but I'd be worried what they'd do to the cam lobes. Glenn says it feels to go pretty well without the flat shift so maybe just avoid those in the future.

When you say flat shift you mean no clutch?
When you say flat shift you mean no clutch?
Flat on gas pedal or not lifting off it when changing gear...?
Wow he was really shifting. poor show on the valve.
Not to sure about the golf rear spoiler. :wasntme:
Hope you guys get it back together soon and rock the pod with a 10SQM C1J :smokin:

Does Glen run single valve springs? Wonder if its worth looking into double ones if he does, know there meant to be abit more gentle on the cam lobs.

Ahh i seeee...Why not use a sequential gearbox?? I know there like 3K:eek: But gotta be the way forward:confused:
Glenn will get it back together in no time. I think he was more pleased that his new gearbox setup and clutch worked well. :)
Thats mint, 11.4 seconds with a dropped valve!
Rotten luck - shows its going to be possible to do on that setup tho!
Rob@Backyardracing
15-05-2011, 23:02
its quite common place in the honda world to drop a valve, they say heavy springs stretch the valves, and if you get them hot enough they fail. may be worth pulling a few valves out and measuring see if they any longer...
good job anyway guys, 103mph 1/8th is spot on for a high 10 :)
For comparison my 144mph runs had 110mph at the 1/8th, so the C1J isn't a million miles off.
Rob, good advice :)
i thought when they made valves, they welded the tulip onto the stalk. with the stronger springs they have more stress on them - more likely to break?

Correct, they are fused together, there is also different materials of stems out there.

they carn't take the power so no good :D

Nope, the valve manufacturing plant I've been into forged the complete valve from 1 piece of material!

smell a 10 no problem son car is nearlly done warning to people using metro turbo valves in there head dont there **** :D:D:D:D:D:Dcarnt take a little power :crap:
Did you use standard metro turbo valves or some aftermarket ones? The standards are two piece and have been known to break!
I know the mini will never hit a 10 but interesting to know. Awesome times as well good to see your car get faster every year.

If you are running one now Glen I'd love t know how well it works off NOZ. :)
The turbo specification remains the same, but bits of dead valve had smashed some blades off the turbine wheel so it needed changing. 6262, yeah right ;)

I just bought a set of ID850's and think they came in at just over £310
Did you use that gearbox that I gave Specky for you? What was it like inside when you opened it up?
Rob@Backyardracing
29-05-2011, 12:19
yeah thats about the going rate, and ideally you need to match them up with the bosch 044 pump which can sustain a high pressure supply, (with a suitable high pressure regulator).
