Any tips on cleaning up the outside of an intercooler chaps? Would 'wonder wheels' be a bit harsh/acidic?

i would suggest this.....for a standard I/C id just degrease then maybe wet an dry any corrosion...let dry..tape up an flash over some rattle can silver....or black any color you like dont have to be silver....

for a double cap degrease..an polish it up with what ever airy fairy stuff you can get..
brillo pads are good for a start..

Wicked, so any old degreaser from halfords is fine?
Cheers!

yep,i have found jizer good cos its cheap for 5 litre's....or just some gunk..
these are both fine for removing greasy sludge but can still leave a film/residue,
so id finish off maybe using a good citrus degreaser or some muc-off...
