you just need to swing the housings around.

BUT...
those ebay specials aren't what you think they are, they aren't garrett, and the wheels are all sorts of sizes. So, although it says GT28 on the tin, that isn't what's in the tin.

i'll have another look tommorrow but sure mine had garrett written on it, is that possible or me hoping if its a garrett one is it better?

what are these things worth and when you say swing housings around is that easy? i mean a diy job for a donut

T2, T25, T3, T4, GT28, GT30, GT42, T67 etc are all Garrett turbos or should be, there are dodgy copies all over the internet that use the same names, but not the same parts, these are invariably junk. There are other excellent manufacturers of turbos Holset, Mitsubishi, etc, they all put their names on their products. I can't speak for all Ebay turbos, just the one's I've seen. They didn't measure up to be anything like the specification they claimed to be, they were unreliable junk. What are they worth? I wouldn't give you anything for one.

Rotating the housings is just a case of slackening the bolts around the perimeter of the housings and rotating them to where you want them. Just remember that the oil goes in the top and comes out the bottom...

I converted my GT2554R to a GT28r on Friday then had a job and a half trying to make up a decent actuator bracket. I had to splice two T3 brackets together and weld them up, it looked o.e once i'd finished though.

If it's a Garrett unit it'll have Garrett stamped in big letters on the compressor housing along with a tag on the core stating the part number.

If you haven't got an oil drain, you'll need to get hold of one, as the GT cores run a smaller type.

if it's garrett you might want to see which version it is, or whether it's got a non-standard exhaust housing.

Garrett is the only brand you want.

Ross, what's worrying is you say 'it's this exact one'.

What I also notice is that the intake is not the right type to fit the GTT either. You'd need to mess with that as well.

Garrett built those Rollerbearings to replace Nissan's stock units, so they're desgined on the flanges and pipework positioning. It's a little more work than fiddling with the housing position. Plus only two of the stud holes in the exhaust housing match up to the Renault elbow.

all true, it's so long since I fitted one to my GTT engine I'd forgotten about the fiddling about needed to make it fit. But then it fades into insignificance after all the fiddling-to-make-stuff-fit that I've done since.

Was this the one with the 60 trim wheel? What's it like?

Was this the one with the 60 trim wheel? What's it like?

cripes, it was a while ago. Compared to the 50 trim with a .49 rear end, I also tried a 50 trim with a .64 rear end. This was the 60 trim with a .64 rear end, but not the normal one, it has the S15 style wall between the turbine and wastegate exit (supposed to help spool). It also has the S15 T4 type compressor housing rather than the GTiR T3 size one. I really struggled to get a lot of boost out of it, I managed eventually with a huge spring on the wastegate and a bleed.

After I'd run the two I kept the GT on, it spooled later, but the throttle control once above the spool point was better. The reality is that I find the T28s too unresponsive for hillclimb use. I used it for the 11 sec runs, but was pretty much maxed out, at the time I almost went out and bought something bigger just to go back for a 10 :D With the Gordi full boost was 4300, for the hills I wanted that at 3500, but at the strip could live with 5500, and maybe a bit more.

oh no, its not a garrett its a copy and trev it came as a spare in the car but was never fitted its totally wrong for the car, so no joy there.

i'm quite happy that the t2/t25 i have now works which is just nice to know so will stop messing about and simply make do.

So, what was the maximum boost you were able to get out of it before you ran into problems? I vaguely remember Ant@backyard had the same problem a few years ago, he was having trouble getting over 22psi, or there abouts...

it got hard work at about 18psi, but I managed to get it to 25psi.

Oky doky. I don't quite need 25psi, but I may have to change a few bits if I can't get more than 18psi.

Im on the GT2560R .64 aka GT28r or whatever it says. Max boost i can make is 24psi, i get surge at 25psi. This is with no actuator pipe. Also fitting was a bit of a faf with having to strighten the actuator rod after lining up the housings to what suited my boost run then i made the rod adjustable with a sleave, tap and die as it wasnt long enough to reach after i moved it to fit to the front of the comp (think i tapped a thread for this to for the mount). Ive now got this tight as it will go with no more boost, more VE needed :coffee: next thing on list is to shift cam timing and more revs.

Ant did only make 22 with standard cam sure his was the older version of compressor housing thats if theres one? i may be getting confused? also looking throw old timing slips he lost .1 second on 60fts with these larger .64 housings with NOS (so no lag).

Eeeeeeeee T25, gas, 23"MH, 1.6 60fts....

Oh also 3 bolts fit the backend. 2 fit ok the 3rd i had to elongate the 4th is just a bolt with big washer. Or am i wrong ill have go check...:crap:

Adam L

You're right on the studs, as i've only got 2 through the stock elbow at the moment and the 3rd is held on with a washer. I've got a v band that needs welding up with the downpipe sitting around.

Are you using the actuator supplied? The one I have has an 8psi spring but I was going to chane it for a -31. I also had to run a die down the actoatur rod and put an adjustable arm on it. I haven't actually tested it yet, so i'll have to see what happens, it's not on a stock cam either.

The spec i've got is basically an RS but the comp wheel is .7mm smaller on the inducer.

There also seems to be a variation in GT rear housings, i've noticed the wastegate arms are different with the U.S supplied ones compared to the European. I wonder if the stud patterns alter... I'll have a look tommorrow at work.

or Australia..

I used the standard actuator for a bit, I know I swapped it for a Forge one (whole new can of worms, spring testing, phone calls etc :() I can't remember when, or why I swapped, but then this was 4/5 years ago.

I have got a brand new one of these turbos (garrett) to fit with a 0.49 a/r rear housing .... probaly be next year in all honesty before i get a chance to whack it on .... got most of the fittings for it ready ...... just need a lower 90 degree bend water pipe (will existing one fit ???) and a actuator for it ....... was gonna buy the ktec T3 one as it should bolt in place .... anyone used one of these ???

Also was told to use the oil fitting with a restrictor in the top of the turbo , is this is correct for the R5 too.....?

Will i need more than 18psi (manifold) with this turbo on a road car ??? Im guessing it should be making over 190Bhp at this kinda boost level if fuelled correctly.

Mart
11-11-2008, 14:52
BB blowers don't require as much oil as the old skool journal type, so in most cases a restrictor inline, or a smaller diameter oil feed pipe, is required.

I seem to recall circa 60psi oil pressure is the threshold point, so if your gtt's oil pressure @ the turbo inlet isn't anywhere near that, you should be ok as is.

Even though you've got the smaller .49a/r housing, you might still find the turbo is a touch too laggy - This being because you're still running the same 53.x mm turbine wheel that comes with all the gt2860 series blowers.

its just that when you buy one from ATP they supply a restrictor as part of the oil adaptor, I binned mine off too.

Hardest part is fitting the pre-rad/fan behind the stock bumper, without too much grinding. Quality units from Dave though (any freebies just send them to the po box ;) )

Hope you had fun with the Pulsar though :)

I did have fun with it, I just spent so much money on it I actually regret it now. I just got too involved with power and it took the second engine letting go for me to realise that:rolleyes:. If it was as cheap as the 5 to tune/run/maintain, i'd keep it.

The gearbox never let go though, so that's a first:laugh:
