View Full Version : Clutch choice
Renault 5 GT Turbo

Hi,
This is a simple one...getting a new clutch fitted but don't know which route to take.
My car is completely standard and I have no intention of modifying it.
- Sachs
or
- Veleo green box with Volvo soft pedal
I want a light clutch pedal as my left knee has seen better days...road running to blame there.
What do you think?

I'd go with the valeo green box personally as that'll suit your standard gtt
There is no real need to go valeo green box (uprated) as you wont be needing anything like that to cope as standard, if you go for a sachs version, for normal gt turbo, this will be fine for your car and will be cheaper as well.

Ok so a divide in opinion.
Is the Sachs clutch light under foot?

I would only choose valeo for perhaps more longer lasting and wearing with a standard gtt it would be unlikely to wear or ever need replacing again.
I also believe they are of a better quality than sachs.

Your right there mate but think Dave doesn't want the 'snappy' feeling you get with the Valeo one (sometimes) so think Sach's will do him well enough. ;)

Mark do you think the soft pedal conversion would mask the snappy feel of the Valeo?
Mike was keen I go for the Valeo with volvo soft pedal. Having experienced neither, I am unsure.

Yes it would mate but for me keeping the car original i'd be tempted to leave the arm standard.
Either way you go it'll loose the snappy feel, for me both clutchs will work fine just depends on which way you prefer to go.

I think it would hide It to a degree, isn't this why people have this soft peddle malarky ?

Yeah thats right mate, to hide the 'snappy' feel the longer arm is fitted. As you know its hit and miss weather a Valeo will have that snappy feeling as some do and some don't.

i had a mega snappy clutch in my old white 5, it was a traffic light staller thats for sure.. you'd be bringing the pedal up nice and smooth then bang it would ram your knee into your chin..
that engine, that clutch were then fitted to another 5 and the snappy spring loaded pedal went away.. somewhere something wasn't right, but i think it was more, pedal, clutch cable or how the cable was being held round the engine bay..
go sachs anyway, no point risking it:)

Yep we've fitted a fair few now to realise it's hit or miss, I know it's either on or off with mine but I personally don't mind it,
Dave you more than welcome to have a run in mine to feel the valeo I have :agree:
Mine's a 'snappy' one but you soon get used to it. Driving my Navara is weird after though!

Yep I'm with you on that one! After a drive in the 5 the vr6 I had felt well different! Even the trafic van I have now does too!
