View Full Version : Problems getting the old cup started.

Ive had my gt stored away in my garage for about 2 years with no use.
I now actually have the time, a bit of cash, but more importantly the inclination to start driving and racing it again.

Couple of small issues tho. I've gotten rid of the old fuel and give it a couple of gallons of fresh stuff, changed the sparks and now the battery... But it'd having a bit of trouble turning over. Ie, it turns over slowly and noisy.

Starter motor is the first thing on the list to do, I've changed 2 on previous 5's and have forgotten most of the detail but I recall it being a bitch (cramped). Before I change the motor I want to replace the wiring as I feel it could do with a renew. I'll clean the grounding points and put a couple of new cables in but I'm not familiar with the wiring that the starter motor takes.

Anyone got links for new cables for the starter motor and the ground leads? Halfords can't be e cheapest. Failing links, advice on cable spec would be appreciated.

Also, what was the old "uprated starter motor" ;) I'll price that up as a possible replacement.

Any other advice welcome... Also, if your in the area and want to help..... ;)

, so y'all can hear it turning over.

with oe brackets etc it can be a little bit of a pain, but if they were left off its not so bad.. you can reach all the bolts from the top with some feeling about, it just needs to go up in the air so you can get to the wiring. im sure someone could do it from the top but i dont..

was the uprated the laguna one? they make a nasty noise so most people bin them for standard again. im gonna run a normal one on my new engine, the uprated made my ears bleed..

if you have a new battery pumping out its full power then an earth might be poop, jump lead as a cheeky test perhaps:D

holy cow that sounds ruff, that could be the uprated..

when its got good cranking from the battery, a good starter it should turn silky smooth.. thats far from what mine does........well did, its in bits:crap:

i have the alternative starter motor on my 5,not sure what its off originally, but find it quieter, less prone to sticking an more reliable than the oe one, been on a good year+ now an happy with its performance an cranking power...
:):agree:

Isn't the uprated one from a laguna?

That sounds like duff battery or wiring imo, try a different battery first.

If the starter is duff, avoid the so called 'uprated' they fail quite often, a good o.e valeo is what u want;)

to me the engine sounds quite tight, can it be turned easy by hand

Haven't tried... You'll have to remind me.
It actually seemed to turn a little easier, but turning the car over now does feel a little tight and grindy.

Brigsy..... It's just had a brand new Bosch s5 063 battery.

Got a 19mm spanner on it, and didnt require a lot of torque to turn it...

I'd whip the plugs out, then try cranking it on the starter to see if it turns over easily with no compression.

If it is still reluctant to turn over, then I would ask for help on here!

Hard to tell, as the starter was cranking faster than i could with a spanner.

I'll pull the plugs out and give see how it sounds.
My money's on the wiring.

The car didn't have any previous engine problems. I would assume i'm not able to do much damage without any combustion happening... i mean, there's presumably a spark and fuel going in, but i haven't been able to start the engine. Anyone else think damage to the engine could have been caused whilst trying to start it???

Surely if i pull the plugs and it still turns over slowly, then this would indicate a starter motor problem, without jumping straight to a engine problem.... ???

the fact its not starting isn't all that bad as it might have needed priming again.. cranking it over a few times can build up the pressure, but i think someone said pouring some oil down the oil filters middle mounting bolt helps.. i cant remember so someone else please correct me now:D

If its a new battery its either the wiring or the starter, probably the starter if its getting a decent 12v+ when cranking.

well; it had a lot of cranking (which sounded a lot better than it does now) when it was priming... (done enough oil changes over the years to know to disconnect the king lead and let the oil work its way round first).
I also dumped a bit of oil into the rocker.... (Once the bitch has started, it's getting an oil change).

Is your cup road registered? Do these run about 150bhp with their various tweaks?

I recognise your cup car. Do you know much about the history? Was it raced by Steve Alderton by any chance? My dads engines has yellow rocker covers, has it got the sticker on too? :)

I did look up the history, but can't find my document on it. Steve Alderton rings a bell, i think he raced it (and won) in the Super Coupe Cup. I do have a picture of him racing it that I got from the national racing archive... But it's not easily accessible.
It's definitely a Mark Fish car, yellow rocker and 2 stickers on the front.
If he wants to see it again for a discounted tune up, let me know :)

Yep, road registered. Convinced the dvla to give me a v5 then made the appropriate changes to get it through an mot.

Think it was 157bhp when I had it tested.

They all had to run with Mark Fish stickers on the front, as he sponsored the championship :)
I remember going round handing them out when I was a small boy. The drivers hated them because they where always a 'loud' colour.

This is the car I was thinking of:

I think it's the same car, as the sticker which covers the indicator hole on the side is for a specific motor club (south east somthing)... and that's in an identical place.
Also, the dunlop and champion decals are still there.. But the Hellas, mintex and Mark Fish decals down the side aren't there (anymore).

Do you know what date the picture was taken?
Also, do you know anymore about the car.... As much as i can gather is that the shell was from a road car (reg number etched on the windows), and all of the components were transferred from one of the original cup cars, it was then raced in the super coupe cup.

Starter motor being replaced tomorrow, 3 new earth leads going on too. Only thing that's worrying me is putting it on axel stands cleanly (it's parked quite close to one side of the garage :ashamed: )

Car had a new starter motor and it fired back to life :)
Sounded a little whiney, so will stick a new fan belt on it and give it a proper service before taking it back on the roads :)
