dont know many cars that require the engine out to change the clutch mate

guess you can just take turbo off and access it from the top?

Mike GTT
06-11-2008, 15:11
possible: yes....easy: no

i've done two and the quickest way is to have the engine out for sure... som'e people drop the engine out the bottom whilst on the subframe, i've only ever done it through the top... it hasn't taken me longer than a saturday morning + afternoon doing it! :agree:

I had to change my box about 5 weeks ago and it was a nightmare keeping the engine in, wish i had taken it out. After i had dismantled most of it would of proberly been quicker

so how would i do it with the engine in??

Marcus
06-11-2008, 16:15
I would say engine out is the quickest way to do it as well, doesn't take long to get the engine out, only thing is keeping the engine steady whilst you're undoing the stuff on the gearbox etc.

06-11-2008, 16:26
Aye, taking the engine out isn't that hard at all really. But then I would say that, because my Dad helps me, and without his help, I'd probably still be asking whether I should get an electronic supercharger or not :scared:

matt, as i said :D engine out is the best way. and while your at it get a ctm 9slot lightened flywheel :agree:

It aint too hard to do it with the engine in either. I usually whip the engine out, but I got caught with a shafted clutch in the wrong place with just my socket set and trolley jack, so had to do it all in situ earlier this year.

Just whipped off the passenger strut, took the driveshaft out of the hub (just the nut off I think..?) got the turbo and crap out of the way and managed to get enough of a gap between the gearbox and block to get in with the wrench to fetch off the clutch plate.

I had to turn the engine over to get to each bolt, but hey.. not the end of the world that! Getting it all lined up was a little harder, but take your time and its not too bad.

Engine out next time for me, but it can be done if needs be. One man job too.

i did a campus in 4 hrs that way(on my own)the turbo would only take a bit longer and i'll be giving it a go next time!

Ashy
06-11-2008, 22:46
you could drop the subframe and drop the box out the bottom...

done taht on a 182 but not sure its any quicker?

On a GT Turbo it is by far the easiest way to take the engine out i have found & leave the box in the car :)

This is how i do it

Seriously dude, don't bother trying to do it with the engine in, last I did it took me 2 days to do it, where's as when i took the engine out to change it took 6 hours, its alot easyer and u won't damage the paint in ya bay as much

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

defo take the engine out but leave the gearbox in situ...took me about 7hours on my own ...with tools and engine crane...nvr taken engine out on my own before then....just grit ya teeth and get in to doing it...dnt forget to mark up pipes/hose's etc if your in doubt about putting all of it bk in the right place so bottle of tip ex...good luck just take your time. ;)

To be honest once you have changed the clutch with the engine in the car once it isn't too bad to do, last time i done it it was all changed in about 3hrs.

Take the turbo off and all bits around that area out, pull bothg shafts off, remove the engine mounts and brackets for the box and then pull the box off and remove it out the top of the engine bay. Its abit more involved then that obviously but thats the basic principle of the job. I will be honest it isn't that bad.

To be honest Matt J there's no wrong way of doing it, everyone has there own way of doing it it just comes down to which way you find easiest.

matt, i can help you sort it if you want.? providing you supply the kopparberg pear cider, a glass and ice :D oh and a lift back home when im wasted :p

if you want a hand give me a shout.

you can start off by removing all the engine bay hoses. i say all as it'll give you a chance to clean them up while there off.
remove the turbo.
remove the starter motor.
remove radiator,i take it out incase of accidental damage.
loosen alt belt and pull alt towards the block.
lodge a straight edge ;) on the flywheel to lock it in place and then undo the crank pulley retaining bolt and remove it and the pulley.
just do all that and then ill help you get it out.
dont worry about the bits youve removed as i know where everything goes when you come to refit it all.
:)

15-11-2008, 17:29
when taking engine out, do you have to take the turbo off? cant you just take off the down pipe/elbow instead

Kris M
15-11-2008, 18:12
If your lifting the engine out the top you only have to remove the exhaust from the downpipe, leave the downpipe attached to the turbo

2 hrs is quick :) where do you live :)

It was fast as i know the car well and built the engine and whole thing up for the lad a while back and i do away with alot of hoses also theres two of us on the job :ashamed: :). I prob would help peeps out on cars i havnt seen before depending, but it would take longer to a new car as alot of things a bodged together with home made looms and snapped bolts etc. (im not saying anyones cars are like this, just some i see). I have a selected few local members i help out with tune ups etc only because i know the cars well and there owners.. :)

Started mine today, thought id just take the lot out as saves the hassle of splitting the box/engine in the bay.

Disconect everything attached to eninge and box and straight out the top.

Good luck guys :) . quite cold out :).

Just been fitting a new clutch on mine today and its brass monkeys. Done it with the engine in and has taken me about a full day so far.

All those standard brackets make it a lengthy job :).

You'll probably be glad like me to get back up and running. :agree:

Howd you chaps get on?.

Another cold day for me and i'm nearly finished. Took it for a role around the block and its nearly ready.

Got a slight blow on the exhaust from the spacer/gasket part. Need to tighten the subframe bolt as it was just spinning :(.

Clutch is now on the floor but that will probably come up comfortably a little once its had a spin.
