View Full Version : Hub Removal - simple advice required

Hi,
I am just in the process of removing my front hubs to have new bearings fitted.
I have undone and removed all bolts required, however I cannot see how the hub comes away from the bottom wishbone ball joint? I have removed the bolt which clamps it but it looks like there is a stud which goes from the top (just below drive shaft) to the ball joint?
Any tips?

you would need a balljoint splitter to seperate the balljoint from the hub or you could undo the 2 bolts on the wishbone that hold the balljoint in place
just got one of mine off tanite actually....track rod end i used a joint seperator.
and for the lower ball joint once that bolt is removed it will come off with a little
effort, spray some fluid on there if you wish,an just smash it off...

I'm not trying to split the ball joint, just want to remove the hub from the low wishbone (with the ball joint in place).
as rob says then just undo the two lower bolts bud.

Sure I got the track rod end off with a joint separator, but how did you get the lower ball joint to separate from the hub? Mine looks as though it has a stud top so will not go through the gap to allow me to lift the hub up and away from the wishbone.
I want my hubs to part company with the wishbone & ball joint, as per pic below:

Ok sounds like the easier option, not sure why haynes recommends undoing the clamp bolt and simply lifting hub away...may 20 years ago huh!
Will this upset the tracking if I undo to two bolts holding the lower ball joint to wishbone?
Many thanks.

if you have un done the lower ball joint and it still sits in tight give it a little tap it "should" free its self if not you can use the joint seprator i think, that should get it off.if you do use that spray sum wd40 on the rubber it can reduce it from splitting.need to change my bearing soon again as well:sad2:

Cool, thanks for all of the advice. I will unbolt it now and separate the ball joint from the hub when off. Can give it some persuasion safely away from the car!

sum times it will just be rusted in abit and with the weight or the whole car
the ball joint sits in realey tight,so the ball joint should do the job:)

You can also knock a small chissel in to the opening to open it up a little, releases the ball joint a bit.

With the hubs off the car, the ball joints came out easily...feel like a pleb now!
New bearings will be pressed in tomorrow, no more humming noises for me.
