View Full Version : CR Spec White Clio 172
Well, after viewing a white Renault Clio 172 shell I decide to take the plunge and get involved in another project. I’ve really enjoyed driving and modifying the blue Clio 172 over the last two and a half years so buying this white shell with the Clio Cup rollcage seemed like the next logical step. The blue 172 is now a donor for the white shell, it seems a shame to do it but it makes sense as I know the car inside and out. Mechanically bar the gearbox it’s never let me down, along the way I’ve changed many components so I know that nearly everything going on the white shell isn’t over two years old.
So, this is how the white 172 evolves from a bare shell to a fully track prepped car.
Friday 4th March
Right, so we head to Suffolk in the Transit van towing a car trailer to pick up the Clio shell. Within 2 hours of being there we’ve attached all the dampers and wheels on the shell to roll it the trailer. By 3pm we’re back home and it now proudly sits on the driveway, this is where all the work will happen.

Saturday 5th March
Stickers! First job is to remove every trace of stickers off the shell, I hate them and want this car to look crisp and clean, minimal looks, understated. So with the trusty Nicky Clarke hairdryer (borrowed!) I attack the stickers all on 4 sides of the car.

http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000111.jpg
Stickers removed it’s time to give it a wash, probably the first time it’s been cleaned in months. Now that’s done we’re left with glue residue sticker outlines, so with the help of AutoGlym tar and bug remover I set to work. So far so good, by the close of play Saturday the shell is back to being white.

http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000123.jpg
Sunday 6th March
Now it’s time to use AutoGlym super resin polish and buff the entire shell to remove any trace of stick outline marks. Ideally it could do with a machine polish but with a bit of elbow grease it cleans up really well. The door shut rubbers are removed and the shuts on the doors and the boot are polished. Next the interior is hovered then polished as well. Sunday draws to end, the only thing left to clean is the front bumper and grill which has months of road kill on it.

Tuesday 8th March
Time to wash the bugs of the font bumper, mild scrubbing with hot soapy water helps, more polish afterwards and it’s looking much better. The bumper is the worst panel with a few scratches, money permitting I’d like to have it sprayed but that can wait for now.
Wednesday 9th March
Out comes the power jet wash, I give all the inner arches a good clean in preparation for painting with white smooth Hammerite. The plastic inner arches will be fitted back as well.
Thursday 10th March
Ordered parts today, Powerflex wishbone and dogbone mount polybushes along with 2 sets of rear negative camber shims.
Sunday 13th March
The shell is put on 4 axle stands and wheels removed, this give me the option on whether to leave the subframes on or swap them with the blue Clio. Matt from Code Red is coming over today to start work too. The first big job to tackle will be the electrics. There are 3 looms at the front of the shell and 2 of them have been cut about. As part of the deal with buying the white shell it also came with 3 complete and uncut looms from another Clio 172. The headlight is a straight swap, the engine loom is complete but will be changed as the battery will be located in the boot so the loom will be adjusted to suit.
The loom that will require the most work is the interior loom, as this will be a track based car I won’t be having any of the creature comforts that come in most cars as standard issue. So all the airbag wiring will go, so will all the stereo wiring, electric window wiring, and more.
Monday 14th March
Polybushes and camber shims arrive in the post, the wishbones are taken off the subframe.

Tuesday 15th March
Ordered new solid top suspension mounts
Wednesday 16th March
Pop into Renault dealership to order all the fixings that hold the bumper, front gill and plastic inner arches in place.
Thursday 17th March
Solid top mounts arrive in the post, Matt from Code Red has sourced some manual window mechanisms, tailgate strut and decoder ring from his local breakers. I head up near Clacton to pick up 4 Yokohama Parada Spec 2 tyres I’ve bought off a forum to go on the painted OZ wheels.

Saturday 19th March
Second full day on the project, this gives me the chance to do some running about sorting more bits and a chance to work on the shell. The local scrap yard have interior door handles, window rubber and an indicator stalk, bought. Next stop the local alloy wheel and tyre place to fit the tyres to my OZ wheels, not good as 1 is flat spotted. In the end I only have 2 of the tyres fitted so this gives me the chance to fit them to the Clio to see how it looks. Then pop into Renault to pick up the parts i ordered the other day
http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000172.jpg
Back at home I fit the door handles and indicator stalk. Then i mock fit the OZ wheel i painted to see how the metallic grey will look on the white shell

http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000167.jpg
Next it’s time to white Hammerite the inner arches, these will probably need 3 or 4 coats but even after the first coat it looking much better than the grubby brown.

Everything you see above has all taken place in the last 2 weeks, the idea is to fully prep the shell so it's ready to start having the parts fitted from the blue Clio. There will be more parts ordered in the next week but the next main stage is to buy a cheap runabout car to take the place of the blue Clio so i can still be mobile throughout the project. When this happens it's all systems go to start stripping the blue Clio :)
Anyway, i hope you like what you see and enjoy the updates

looking good and the wheels look :smokin:
Wednesday 23rd March
After finding out 1 of the OZ wheels is buckled i source another alloy from a breakers in Doncaster. Silly on my behalf as i should have checked BEFORE painting :crap:
Friday 25th March
Wheel delivered via courier, will give me something to do again in the wheel department :ashamed:
Sunday 27th March
Matt from Code Red is over again today
Time to cut EVERYTHING not needed from the interior loom, now is the time to be harsh and remember that it is a track/2nd car. Heater-AC-Climate control loom, airbag wires, stereo and speaker wires. NO central locking, electric windows, rear windscreen wiper, rear demister.
12V is kept, OBD is in, Hazard switch stays
By the end of the day we fill up a carrier bags worth of wires and plug connectors. The loom is put roughly in place ready to be tidied up but we have it near where we want. It still looks like a birds nest of wires but not half as much there now.
http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000222.jpg
Window winder mechanisms are fitted, also the ignition decoder and tailgate strut. We tried to get away with using just 1 strut but it's not quite enough.

Tuesday 29th March
Ordered white Aerocatch quick release bonnet catches and they turn up today. I've also ordered some replica Clio Cup race door handle spacers, as there is no doorcard fitted there is a void between the door and the handle so they moulded some spacers to fit.

Wednesday 30th March
I have some spare time so i unpack the OZ wheel from it's packaging, the worst part is the outer rim edge wheel, it's badly scuffed. Other than the spokes slightly chipped i don't think it will take long having it flatted back, filled then re sanded

Thanks Brigsy, really pleased with how it's coming along. I'm trying to cover all bases in every department i.e suspension, brakes, wheels, interior, exterior. In that everything that goes on is in decent condition if used already and new or uprated parts are fitted wherever available. Finances allowing nothing will be left to chance and will not leave the driveway until i'm 99.9% happy :D
Then it's track time to give it a shakedown to see how it all performs together

have the sleeves for the wishbone bushes been tacked into place?
have the sleeves for the wishbone bushes been tacked into place?
They will be mate, 3 tacks on each sleeve. Just need to buy the ARB polybshes then the whole set is done. Also on the lookout for solid top engine mounts as well :)
Also making a PMT tow eye too, touring car style
You decided what engine tuning route your going down yet?

Will be in a min......;)
Matt.
You decided what engine tuning route your going down yet?
I used most of the turbo budget buying the white shell. If i was to go down the turbo route still, i'd have to make that choice soon as the engine and all ancillaries would be going in. Ideally the turbo manifold, turbo and sump with oil feed and return would all be bolted to the engine before dropping into place.
Long term i could go N/A this year and maybe build up a turbo engine throughout the year. Enjoy the Clio in 2011 then maybe turbo it over the winter or new year 2012.
For now though there's enough going on :ashamed: :D

Personally i think a phase 1 in white looks just as good.
As of tomorrow the Blue Clio comes off the road after 2 and a half years of enjoyable ownership, i took it out for it's last spirited drive this afternoon. Sad in 1 way but in another looking forward to driving the white 1, in theory it should be a better drive with the upgrades taking place.
So, this week i'll be taking parts off the blue Clio and fitting them to the white shell, hopefully by the end of this week it will look more the finished article exterior wise. Headlights, plastic side trims, phase 2 rear lights, foglight ducts will all be going on.
Still haven't shifted the carbon bonnet, was hoping it would sell to fund parts i still need like solid top engine mounts, ARB polybushes. The OZ wheel i bought from Cliospares is also buckled so they're sending another down.
I should have more pics by the end of the week showing the changes :)
Monday 4th April
Blue Clio is now officially off the road, the insurance ran out the 5th April and the tax runs out the end of April so it's worked out just right. This means i can start taking parts off it and fitting them to the white shell.
Phase 2 rear lights, plastic side trims, clear side repeaters, headlight are fitted

looking good bud, you going to get it weighed once its built? i was quite suprised to see how much a mates tin top clio weighs in at. think its time i down size to get that power to weight up some more
Cheers mate, yeah i'll get it weighed when it's all done. The beauty is i bought the shell with all the tar and sound deadening already removed, obviously no interior like rear seats, plastics etc. The loom chopped right right back to only what i need like indicators, horn, lights, ecu, ancillaries.
I don't know what the kerb weight is for a std phase 1 Clio 172, to be honest it's not something i'm chasing (being the lightest 172) but fortunate to be in a situation where i literally started with the bare shell so i only add in what i need to use.
What i lack in outright power i'm trying to make up in the suspension, handling departments.
Fingers crossed it will make such a difference after upgrading all the bushes, engine mounts, negative camber and toe out front and rear, adjustable damping set up.
Once it's all done it's going to Brands Hatch for shakedown :)
Loads of things happening over the last 2-3 weeks and losing track of what and when i did it :ashamed:
Good Friday was the last major push of work on the car, mission, to get it back on all 4 wheels. Shoppers popped over, Matt too and between us we did it.
Lets go back a week or 2.
More work is done on the interior loom, all unwanted wires are traced back to their plastic connectors and pulled out. This has slimmed down the loom big time, there's no loom or anything associated heater and pollen filter wise left inside the scuttle either.
The K Tec front suspension solid top mounts are drilled and fitted to the turrets
http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000253.jpg
The K Tec coilover kit is taken off the blue clio, cleaned up and sold on. The white Speedline wheels are also cleaned up and sold on too. This is to fund the single biggest purchase yet on this project.... The FK Konigsport coilover kit. This will now allow me to have adjustable ride height, adjustable damping and also adjustable negative camber up front.
http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000268-1.jpg
In between waiting for the coilovers to arrive direct from Germany i decide to paint the wheels yet again, this is the 3rd time now and hopefully the last. I wasn't happy with the finish on the mettalic grey so i not only sand them back smooth but also go for another colour change. So that's orange, to grey.... and now to gloss black.

http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000266.jpg
I also sand down the wishbones and spray them Hammerite satin black, once they're dry i press the polybushes in place. Before fitting the wishbones back on i degrease the front subframe so it's nice and clean.

Another thing i've been wanting to do for a while is change the colour of the lettering on my bucket seats, it's been bugging me that they're orange and to me won't look right in the car with a red cage. So with the missus on hand and a spare 10 mins she works her magic on the stitching

:scared: Oh yeah, just take it very slow and easy matey don't want to split the carbon
Thanks for the comments peeps.
That's the plan Brigsy, all coolant hoses are loose in the blue Clio, all bar the engine mounts, loom, driveshaft, gearstick shift coming off (2hrs work) the engine is ready to come out. Once it's out it'll have a new cambelt, dephaser pulley and aux belt fitted. A lick of paint on the block, ported, matched inlet manifolds fitted then it should be able to drop in on the white clio
It's close..... there's still more to do on the interior loom, the battery will go in the back so the engine loom will be modified to suit too. Induction wise it'll be ram air from the foglight duct to the inlet.
Also a big thanks to Matt who makes the trip over from Kent to work on it :agree:
:scared: Oh yeah, just take it very slow and easy matey don't want to split the carbon
Well there is that to it, i was also thinking it's a crime to drill through £400 worth of bonnet when i'm not 100% sure i like it on there. The bonnet sold would pay for the new cambelt etc :ashamed: but it is lighter... and a crime to paint it white too :D

MOT is tomorrow morning... shouldnt be an issue with it... :)
OK, so the seats and subframes that were in the blue Clio aren't a direct fit in the white shell. The rails in the white shell have been ground out to make way for side mounts. This means the subframes on the seats i had modified to go in the blue shell won't work, cool in 2 ways as the shell has weight cut out of it and in changing the seat subframes i've managed to lose 7.8kgs of excess subframe material :)

All i'm left with are the squares of metal that bolt to the seat runners, cool, all i need done is L shaped stips of metal welded to the side of the seat frame runners. So off to the fabricators to have them done

Very nice mate. I'm liking that!:agree:
Thanks for the kind comments, its nice to see parts I've bought over the last 6 weeks that have been sitting in the store room finally going onto the car. I try to maintain a pace on it to keep it going, I was in the scrapyard first thing this morning buying more parts. I'd like it to be ready for National Day but won't pressure myself into overdoing it and cut corners
Saturday i popped down to the breakers for misc parts to finish off areas of the Clio.

To fit the dash i ended up cutting in half so i can scribe each end of the dash round the rollcage, as the plastic part of the dash in the centre takes up most of the dash you only see a 3" cut line at the back so i'm not too worried. The plastic centre part ofthe dash will house the 12V feed and hazard switch so the holes will be blanked off in carbon fibre. I'm also looking at using a digital dash so the clock opening will also be blanked off. I also wanted the dash to hide most of the interior loom that runs from the steering column across to the fuse and relay box.

A tad tight between the alternator, gearbox end cover and the exhaust downpipe :ashamed: :D Not too bad though, just making sure all the loom was disconnected, we did unfortunately have to snip the main red wire off the alternator as the nut was stuck fast and we didn't want to shear it off.
Carbon sheet, i'll have to measure the clock opening but at a guess i'd say a ft square but will measure and send you a txt :)
Yeah the blue Clio looks a little worse for wear, i'll start putting bits back on it this week to get it ready for rolling away. I actually think i have all the parts i need off it now
A few minor updates,
We're getting closer to to the finishing line, another 3 full working days could see it fire into life and hopefully the main parts done. It's the small details and jobs i'm working on in between my friend coming over to keep it going, i must have been to Renault 4-5 times within the last week ordering, nuts, bolts and gaskets to finish jobs off.
So, the weekend just gone. Nothing big but to me i wanted to do this. The centre section of the dash houses the digital display, as its missing and i hate having the void there i decided to head to the scrappers to buy 1 just to fill it. As the lower dash and everything is missing i had to superglue and gripfill the parts to the centre plastic section.

The void below the digital display which usually houses the centre vents will be blanked off with carbon fibre, this will house the 12V supply and the hazard switch.

So this week i'll try and sort fixing points for the lwer parts of the dash, the interior loom, relays and fuses will tuck away under the dashtop. I'll degrease the engine and gearbox too so thats ready to go back into the white Clio..... Getting there

Also realisation setting in that National Day is a matter of 3 weekends away and the engine is still sitting behind the car and not in it :D

A project to do good ol' RTOC proud :) Keep the updates coming, it's fascinating :agree:
Looking very smart fella. Fingers crossed you get everything done by national day. :)
Done a few more bits and pieces finishing the small odd jobs i've left. Also the 2 main jobs on the engine were the Clio Cup alernator setup and throttle body clean up. As i'm not using the air con system in the Clio i wanted to source the Clio 172 Cup alternator as that model also doesnt use AC. From what i've seen losing the complete AC system means losing 11kgs in weight and no sapping power.

So, now the alternator and TB is on, the engine is now ready to go into the white shell this weekend. This means next week will see the complete cooling system going back in, power steering lines plumbed in etc. There's still a couple of bits to do on the dash even though it's in like switches and clocks but the seats and harnesses are in place and done. Other than that it's the looms, getting there :)
Dude, you thought about replacing that crank pulley? See how the damping rubber has perished/cracked on yours - When the Evo one goes like that, it usually ends up splitting completely, causing the outer ring to break away from the inner, and dropping the alt' belt off in the process.

and if your really unlucky the outer ring could slip inwards and shred the cambelt :disagree:

could it be the reason why the f series engines have a habit of shredding aux belts and in turn taking out the cam belt as that happens far too often?
glad to see the cam belt has finally been changed as i was waiting for a my cam belt has snapped thread, or have you just changed it again for peace of mind?

No, but I know several Evo's that have, and it's the harmonic damping rubber that's failed.

Not always, Its usually down to the aux belt not being installed in the correct orientation, and it mostly affects the K4 engines, they run a funny belt configuration that looks offset.

No, but I know several Evo's that have, and it's the harmonic damping rubber that's failed.
The easiest way to find out if its failing is to paint a line across the two pieces, if after a few miles the line won't line up then there is a problem, alot of 2.0 Mi16 peugeot vib. dampers do this and you can't align the cambelts properly.
TNT Tricky Nicky

i see, i haven't really looked too deep into these engines as i've never had a need too. just seen alot of people on cliosport having that issue and it seemed like a viable reason.
poor fitment would also explain it as most people don't seem willing to pay the price to have it done properly, good job ricardo has you at hand to make sure it's done right :agree: :)
True, but a line of paint won't help you when X miles down the road/track the pulley splits in half :D They seem to fail (at least on the Evo's) in the blink of an eye, and no way of telling if & when they're going to.
Entirely upto Ricky, but if it were my engine & the pulley looked like that, and I was coughing up as much money as he has/is for this conversion overall, I'd be changing it, and certainly more so on a track-orientated car (ie, increased rpm variation/stress on that pulley).
Matt@CodeRedMotorsports

Blimey, if you saw what goes on in the race car world, you would never accept a hot lap off lots of racers!!
Thats why we check it after a 'few miles'......;)
This pully has been on the car more than likely before the last cambelt change, and, looks original to me.....circa 100k miles, I'm sure it will last another cambelt change, epecially as its not driving air con, extra idlers and a massively over tight tensioner with a belt a mile long....
But, quite rightly said, its up to Ricardo, as its his project, but where would it end if every piece where replaced if it looked a bit suspect?....fixed brake lines have a bit of paint missing and slight corrosion on the unions....the master cylinder has been open to air for a month....
I'm sure if Rich where to replace every single part like that, we would not see the car hit the track for a very long time!:ashamed:

Now it's in it's time to first sort out the PAS pipes, now that there's a different alternator setup 1 of the pipes has to be bent to re route onto the original pipe
http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn442/Ricardo-1974/WP_000415.jpg
After thats done it's a case of refitting the coolant hoses, header tank, engine loom. Clipping in the clutch cable, throttle cable too. Now that the injector rail cover is gone and the 2 threaded bars that hold it have been cut off, there's plenty of room to re route the induction pipe from the airbox. The old setup ran to the passenger foglight, it will now run in front of the injectors and behind the top part of the grill. The next job is to drill holes in the black part of the grill for airflow. Handbrake cables were fitted and the gear linkage sorted too.

Haven't really done much in the last 2-3 weeks, been sorting mechanical parts to try and finish it off and finally get it up and running which hopefully should be this Sunday.
Ordered a new exhaust to cat (or decat in my case) fitting kit, i have the old stuff but preferred to just fit new . It makes it easier fitting it all up, the KTR stealth will go on this Sunday too. IMO a 2 man job, i did try it at about 9pm the other night but it gave me the ump so i left it!

E Bay is cool that anything you can think of project wise there's a shop selling it, items like nuts, bolts, washers etc all delivered to the door within 48hrs

Next job was to jack up the front and get the wheels off to fit the driveshafts and the ABS brackets. As i'm using s****y new coilovers the bracket hole doesn't quite line up so i elongate them to fit the new M6 dome headed bolts i purchased as Renault parts couldn't find them on the system.

Also, had a slight problem with the whole key fob situation. Basically to get the car started you need a key fob, UCH and ECU all off the same car. I have an ECU and UCH taken from a silver phase 1 Clio 172 that was broken BUT didn't have the keyfob. Luckily i text the chap i had the ECU off nearly 4 months ago and he still has the shell with the key! So i'll be getting the key tomorrow, then fingers crossed it should start this weekend once the phase 1 fuel rail is fitted instead of the later fuel rail which doesn't have the FPR in.
A momentus day on Sunday, i bought this shell 4th March 2011. So in only just over 3 months it's gone from a complete bare shell, to a Clio that fired up for the first time, ok bar fitting the earth cable in the right place. We ended up taking the UCH and ECU off my Odyssey blue Clio and fitted it in the white Clio, i also have the key fob for the blue Clio so i swapped blades in the fobs so everything now matches! We also swapped the fuel sender and the fuel line that runs from the sender to the fuel filter as the phase 1 Clio 172 runs a different setup opposed to the later phase 2. The phase 1 fuel return is now a vent pipe from the fuel tank.
We only ran for as long as the video as we hadn't put the Type D coolant in, it also started running a bit rough so we changed back to the original ICV and it idled spot on. PAS and gearbox fluid done, Type D coolant put in and engine ran until the fan kicked in while bleeding the air out the system. Also checked the voltage output on the 2nd hand 'Cup' alternator and that was a healthy 14V.

Really pleased with how it went, fresh new cambelt kit and aux belt in place. We also fitted the complete exhaust system right from the manifold with the decat to the complete K Tec stealth system. It sounds really nice, there's still a few minor bits to attend to but the next big step (after setting up the front end geometry) is to get it on the rolling road to 1:Map it 2: See what power it is. We're thinking of taking it to a company called Tour de Force.
Matched inlets
Decat
K Tec stealth exhaust
R21 turbo airbox with 100mm diameter intake feed, they use the same airbox but the outlet pipe on the lid is different.
So Monday was spent fitting the front bumper and grill back on, first test fitting the front slam panel to get the bonnet catch working which was good as the bonnet was stuck down even after pulling the catch a few times! So for now i've left the catch off
and even considering going back to the white bonnet to use the quick release Aerocatches as i really dont want to cut holes in the carbon bonnet.
The next job to do is to sort the interior, the loom, UCH and fusebox needs tidying so i'm now thinking of buying the lower part of the dash. At least that way i'll use the passenger side of the dash to 'hide' everything :ashamed: the centre part of the dash blank will have carbon fibre to which the hazard switch, 12V feed and OBD port will sit.
Another decision is whether to go for std 172 dash clocks for now, or if i can get Mk2 low spec Clio clocks to work. Later on i'd like to go digital dash but maybe for now just go for the easiest option to get it out there
The weather has shocking on Sunday, rained pretty much all day so the ol 3 metre square gazebo came out the loft along with the parasol

Was a bit wet wasn't it Rich?
Glad she is a runner now, and those Carbon sheets I gave you to play with for the dash parts, certainly look the bizz.
I think one more good day on it, and she is done ready for some:burnrubber:
Matt@CRM
Non stop rain all day, typical the Monday was spot on sunny! Yep the carbon looks good cheers Matt
Spent the last couple of days sorting out the dash and the wiring, I also tried the clocks and they work as well. I have pics which I,ll put on later put having to relocate the 12v socket and the hazard switch. I've also put the headlight adjuster and dashlight dimmer in the drivers side dash vent
Basically ticking off the 'To Do' list and just about there now, so i turned my attention to the interior and the dash. I'm going to use OE clocks so i needed to find a way of holding them in the phase 2 dash and in front of the rollcage that runs behind the dash. Also, there's the 12V socket, hazard switch to fit along with the dash clock dimmer with headlight adjuster. My mate brought over some thin carbon fibre so i set to work.

Waste pipe clips, threaded bar, nuts and washers to fix dash clocks

I also tidied up the wiring a bit more, fixed the plastic undershield to the front bumper and subframe. I'm just about there now, mechanically it's all done. All that's left is a couple of wiring gremlins, set up the camber and suspension geometry, tax..... Then on the road :D

on a side not and its abit late now, but your tentioner for the cambelt, was that the final position?

The plan is to tax it first thing in the morning 1st July then head up to Santa Pod, whether i'll run it up the strip is a different matter (not sure of the costs)
Tensioner, it has the torx bit in it so i assume it's a pic just before it was tensioned

Thought i'd do an update as the Clio has been on the road since July 1st and covered approx 600 relatively trouble free miles. So, the maiden run out in the first week of July which gives me the opportunity to finally take some pics of the Clio NOT on the driveway! I'm really impressed with the final look of the Clio and can't believe it's actually made it off the driveway on it's own steam after sitting there for 4 months.

The next step to me is to get it on the rolling road to give me a power curve printout so i book it in at the local RR facility quite literally over the road and a 3 minute drive from home. The BHP and torque curve indicate a flatspot, the next step i feel is a remap

There's also the annoying problem with a sticking throttle, i'm having to blip the pedal to drop the revs down. The speedo has also started to play up so i've ordered a new speedo sensor from Renault as well as a new throttle cable. The ICV will need taking apart again and blasting through with carb cleaner

Also sorted some boot badges to fill the holes in the tailgate to finish off the exterior. So time to save for a remap and get it booked in on a trackday to really push it, then hopefully in October i'll be heading over to the Nurburgring.
love it mate going be a good little toy that, and mpg is :D
MPG is awesome, there's nothing in it so it gives a nice return cruising at 60-70mph. I work 11 miles away from home so i gave it a run out to work and back for a week :)
Also had a sort through all my invoices since starting the white project... and then bust out the calculator!
35 invoices from Renault, FK,GSF, Eurocarparts, K Tec, E Bay in 4 months..... Quite a few parts :)

christ mate you been spending quite a bit there, also re the engine id say a remap is certainly next thing to do maybe even try get a set of uprated cams and headwork ?
A remap is definitely the next step, it should smooth out the flat spot in the torque and bhp curves and maybe eek out a little more as i'm running the decat and had the inlet manifolds matched. Cost for a before and after RR run with remap shouldn't be more than £300.
It's a lot of £££ to buy and fit cams, headwork again is going down the £££ route if done by an engineering company. I bet those 2 jobs could reach 1K, it really depends how far 1 wants to go. I need to get it out on track now and push it hard in it's current form
Less than 2 weeks until the trip to Nurburgring, fingers crossed this week i'll have 2-3 minor jobs done on the Clio.
I bought these OZ F1 a couple of weeks ago and trial fitted them on the Clio to see how they looked... Didn't like them so i sold them within 24hrs of posting them on classifieds.

960kgs, thats 51kgs lighter than the 'lightweight' Clio Cup model and well over 100kgs lighter than the std phase 1 Clio 172. Maybe thats why i've seen this peak MPG figure poodling at 30 and 40mph :D

Dude, I want to - Funnily enough, it was after seeing Adey's mate with the capsicum red sprayed ph1 at ND, that really got me thinking (again ) about a Clio as a track car.
Selling the Evo would certainly open up the door of buying a Clio & helping get Whitey back (if I can twist Jimmy's arm).
Hold on, that scratched record is starting again... :bla: :bothered::sleep: :D

Well, if you need a cheap pretty much complete shell (in silver) I have one going soon, couple of dings and scratches, but that means it is going to be Very cheap:laugh: and a good enough basis to have a cracking toy.
Ricardo's brief was a 'fun, fast and usable track orientated toy, which was easy to run and fairly cheap to maintain'. Now, when you think about it, perfectly sums up what he has now, 50mpg on a daily run and a reliable/easy 200bhp/tonne.
Yeah, but didn't he already have said spec car? :D ;)
Let me get the Spa/'Ring weekend out the way, and I'll see what's what then...

You mean 'old 17bluey', or his old white R5?:smokin:
I cant rate these cars enough, i did my first track day in my 172 today at Donington, the car was brilliant. The only problem i had was setting my brakes on fire as i was being too heavy on them!
I met two lads who both advised they owned Evo's, but were fed up of the running and tracking costs. they turned up in a black 172 they bought the week before from an auction for £1500.00
They said it was brilliant, they didn't stop smiling and giving me the thumbs up
It's a perfect all rounder, a daily car even with the cage in. I can live with it, fully road legal which means driving to and from a track and hooning around the track in between. Just need a set of wheels for track use only :)
I know it will get me to the Ring as the mechanicals all came from the blue Clio 172 which i owned for over 2 years. In that 2 years bar changing the gearbox i never had any issues with it.... although it probably hates me right now sitting on the driveway like it is :ashamed:
Mines my daily car at the minute too. Some decent brakes and suspension and its brilliant, besides a filter, mines totally standard. looked the part today though on its track wheels and quick change mirror covers :)
Sorry for the slight crash.

j8tro, looks spot on
Adey, you know, you've been there.
Pound for pound you can't go wrong with a phs1 or 2, you can pick em up for a decent price now.
Personally, to get on track minimum spend all they need is:
New brake fluid
Braided hoses
Brembo HC discs and either DS2500 or Carbon Lorraine pads
Next step if you go regular would be remove rear seats, parcel shelf. Go and enjoy, i just took it a few levels up :D

Crushed!:(
I has some bits off it just before it was getting collected.:sad2:
Cheers Ashy :agree:
Shame to see that's been crushed :( Saying that, I wouldn't want to be paying that much for just for a shell, plus it's a my2001+ (ref' road tax).
The Evo needs to be gone before any of this can happen anyway... :crap:
I can't believe andy's broke that car, it was stunning.

Check!
I have Ferodo DS2500's, Brembro HC discs, Braided lines and AP Racing 500 Fluid. Suspension wise its on some cheap coilovers as 2 weeks before the track day i found one of the front shockers was leaking and it was a last minute decision, TBH there not that bad and have camber adjustment too.
On the day i removed the rear seats and parcel shelf which just made it sound better inside the car! the only failure was i've warped the discs slightly, but at only £45 delivered its not really a big issue.
Pre 2001 is a tad cheaper on the tax.
Regards shells the sad thing about modifed cars is IMO when it comes to sell it's a limited market and not a lot of people have the ready cash to fork out for the car as a whole. A shame, the car gets broken, the best parts go quick and then you're left with the shell........
This is what happened with the white shell..... All singing supercharger converted Clio, then put up for sale with no takers, then broken with the shell left in the back of a pub car park for months :sad2:
the only failure was i've warped the discs slightly, but at only £45 delivered its not really a big issue.
Exactly, cheap enough to replace and back out on track in no time
I find the part prices for these are pretty good on the whole, find a good Clio and they return big fun for little outlay from the wallet

Screw that, £12 disks for me, no need for hc jobbys, expensive or cheap they only last 3 k with track abuse thrown in when rocking carbon Lorraine rc6,s
£12.....mint......where from? I got the HC's from Kam Racing, they are £30 but with £15 delivery. I'm a bit pissed they have warped to be honest

Hehe! Thanks Matt, appreciate the work done i'm more than pleased with everything. Was awesome being in the passenger seat when you gave it the big 1 up that hill turning into the corner at speed  feels solid and sorted.
So as mentioned last night i had the suspension re set to raise the car as the driveshaft was bottoming out. A new Renault throttle cable was fitted and the ICV was cleaned out with brake/clutch cleaner and WD40 (which only lasted 3 minutes!) So it's still running 2.5 degrees negative camber with toe out re done to 5mm.

Ol blue was a brilliant Clio, i'd still probably be driving it now if it wasn't for me finding the white shell. The mods on it were just right for trackdays and taking it to work everyday. I'm glad it will be back, who knows to what spec ;) but it will be good :)
