Hi everyone,

Just how bad is it when your car sounds like its running on spanners. It turns over and starts straight away but the noise is horrific (sounds like a hammer in a washing machine).

Im no good with car problems i just know that this is not good any ideas what this could be and more importantly how much is it likely to cost.

is it running ok,.. does the noise change with the revs.. does it do it on idle.. does it do it with clutch engadged and disengadged? maybe clutch/clutch bearing/ gearbox related?

if it sounds worse at 1400 revs on just sitting not driving its probly bottom end death rattle if it does it all the time it may be the waterpump or alty mine does the same, i took the belt off and ran it for a min and the noise was gone

i was half way to work when i noticed so rather than go back i plodded on.

it makes the rattle when accelerator is pressed. when i let off it stops.
this is in gear like engine breaking not dipped clutch

it rattles on idle (very bad)

the clutch makes no difference.

as far as i can tell it stays the same with the revs but when i accelerate i struggle to hear anything over the side exit.

sorry if the above is poorly worded :crap:

i hope this helps you guys a little and i hope it sounds worse than it is.

take the belt off if it still there u can rule out the pump and alty. culd be a piston ring smapped or the tensioner on the chain worn out

Hard to tell, but to me it sounds like the bottom end maybe? A friend of mine had the same problem and it made the same noise. I wouldnt drive any further if I was you, whatever the problem is.

full set of shells ,crank regrind. oil seals at a min depends on how much u wanna rebuild it you could put new rings, chain etc etc just depends on what u wanna spend. how did it get like that in the first place is also a question could be an oil pump faliure

the night before the oil light came on as i went round a corner so i put some in on the next moning before work and it started rattling on the way to work so i just plodded on and went out to check it at dinner and it was considerably worse, a really heavy knocking.

Let me grasp this, your light came on.. you topped it up? did you check the levels at all? and was the light on long?

if that light comes on you should pull over asap, a few seconds can be horrific!

like that show on nat geo.. light indicates seconds from disastor:cry:

:agree:with the engine running so hot it will burn oil like anythink.even the simlplest of things not checked on these engines can cause massive problems :(even checking the oil.dont sound good though pal:(.every 6 months i change the oil or near to that and 12 months a simple service.
the things is now that (if it dose end up to be the bottom end)it "could" cost £££do you want to spend your money on it..............?

It wasn't on long i just noticed it out the corner of my eye, not even long enough to see what light it was but the only one near it is the choke light and thats orange.

i dont want to spend to much on the engine i rather put something else in?

typically how much do you think it will cost?

Fordy

if you dont want to spend alot of money

why not just drop the sump off, change the big ends and hope its fine?
big end bearings, tube of silicone sealer and some oil

your looking about £60-£70 quid, but its not the best way to do things and probably wont last very long if the crank is scored and the rods gone oval

Joe, my opinion would be to stick with the C1J and get it right once and for all!! I feel for you mate as you have had a right chew on from the off. Sometimes you just end up with a knacker :scared: and it tries your patience. If you still want to do a conversion then the easiest imo would be the B18ft engine and get it complete with all the ecu/wiring etc.

Jeepers - £1000 to fix a bottom end (if that's what it is???) Seems a lot to me. Are you not planning to do it yourself? even so £1000 seems a tad over the top.

Shells - £60
Head gasket - £60
Crank re-grind - £100.

I've still got £720 to play with.

if i was to get it rebuilt i'd be needing to use it quick as its my daily driver so it would involve paying someone else to do the work. i have no idea what that will cost. or where i can get it done.

if i where to go down the other route i would get another cheap car so i had plenty of time to work on the 5.

Doing a rebuild is easy you can have it done in a weekend and thats including removing engine out of the 5 and putting rebuild engine back in. Should still leave you with plenty of time spare for tea, coffee, food, and setting the ole girl up but you need to have all parts ready to go in.

Also check the oil pump tolerances swell as you don't want to rebuild and have an oil starvation problem again.

If you need I have a decent crank and decent spare oil pump:)

Do a comp test before you strip it down as oil problem could have been down to rings?

Don't get a garage to do it they will just take the piss, what you need is a localish member whom can do it for you or give you a hand and help you do it:)

Have a word with your local are rep and see if they can help if not they may know another member up your way whom would be happy to do it for you.

Shame your so far up north there are a few members down this way whom are would be more than willing to help
