Is the rear beam on the Renault extra van the same as the gtt?

I believe its a stiffer torsion bar than the GT Turbo version. Anyknow know how to tell what you have on the car as previous owner has said that I have a renault extra torsion bar on my Raider.

Mines quite noisy and I think it may fail the mot and don't fancy buying a new one.

you say noisey, what do you mean as mine makes an awful racket going over bumps in the road but sound on the flat Markey Mark checked my suspension over but it does sound rough.

I have not heard it as I'm not legal to drive it but my mechanic said it was very noisy and will see what the mot tester says.

If its knocking on the back it may be worn shocker bushes, or the hole in the chassis where shocker bolts to has gone oval.

The rear beam on my van looks to be the same setup as the gtt with drums, no idea on the track width though. The high payload vans have a different beam iirc.

The actual torsion bars themselves can be swapped as they are stiffer on the vans. Prob what has been done

I dont think the torsion bars are any stiffer on my van compared to a gtt

Thanks for the offer mate but I'm not free untill Sunday to pull it off. Mot tomorrow so I will see if it fails or not. I did have a beam but can't think what I did with it.

An easy thing to misplace I suppose!

I broke a whole car and can't work out where 90% of it went

They have different part numbers and the one on my looks larger than the one on a R5 GT Turbo.

coming from peugeot 205s it surprised me how little attention is paid to the rear beams on r5s.

In the peugeot community people spend more cash on rear beams than they do on engines.

probably summat to do with the 205 being known for its handling, whereas the gtt is known for its ease of tuning and general quickness....

205 set up was pretty good right out of the box, the 5 wasn't, i think that is where the handling reputation comes from. I think the 5 handles exceptionaly well too, once sorted. It is just a shame the throttle response is a bit slow with a big turbo on the C1J. Andy (from Plymouth with a yellow GTX rally car, 5GTT rear beam, 172 front) has TBs on a 16v and that is a real weapon in the wet, very drivable when sideways!

The hole in the chasis where the shocker bolt is, is definatley not oval thats been checked, so it seems the shocker bushes seems most likely, how can i check this Brigsy.

Thanks Mat

I think the main reason for the 205 having a lot more rear beam tuning options, is purely down to the fact that a 1600cc NA car is, or was at the time of manufacture, eligible for a lot more motorsport categories.

Even today, there aren't many classes a 1400 turbo engine can enter and be competitive because of the multiplication factor applied to the engine size (x1.7 I think)

I would agree that the Pug was better out of the box on the handling front but, the GTT had better brake and steering feel. The Pug has a better track to wheelbase ratio too.

My 10 cents. :D

Getting back to the initial question, if the Extra torsion bars are thicker, are they made from the same material? Either way, a practical test is probably the best judge?

if the dampers have leaked fluid out this can also cause a lovely clunk. torsion bars on 5 are usually pretty good, but... never say never. make sure ur exhaust isnt whats clunking? or reserve tank strap snapped causing the tank to knock, or lowered too far and bottoming dampers out.
