View Full Version : starting noise????
really bugging me now! really dont know what it could be.. fitted the dowel so the starter is aligned.. it cranks at a good speed just dont know what the noise is? anyone? please!:crap:
video link of noise..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VRMAY5bfHc
is it turning the engine over? or is that the noise from the starter motor?
the engine is turning over fine.. just got that anoying noise carnt figure out what it is:confused:
I changed my starter then got that noise. Put some jump leads on it or a trickle charger over night. My batt was slightly low as the car hadn't been used, meaning the starter wasn't shooting out far enough and therefore grinding on the flywheel. I presume it doesn't make that noise and still start? Your turning the key and just getting that noise?
I put mine on charge over night, and it cranked mint the following day.
the engine is turning over fine.. just got that anoying noise carnt figure out what it is:confused:
In that case it could be damage on the starter or fly wheel teeth. Have you checked both?
yeah try what jay said and if all else fails take starter motor off and connect it via some jump leads to see if its a noisy starter motor and then you can check condition off teeth etc....
the starter is a brand new recon.. i had the problem with my old starter so thought id get a new one and its stil doing the same.. and the flywheel was fine when i put it on as it was a L&B one
my battery is ok even had it with jumpleads from my dads car it cranks over the speed it should i think just liek somethings catching

Did you try tw@ing it matey?:D
tried everything mate its really got me :confused: dont know what it can be! really anoying!
is the bracket still on the back of the starter motor?
could be a weak solenoid spring not giving enough juice too it......A way to test would be a substitute ignition switch + to the starter
I will have a go at doing that.. It seems asif its cranking over enough just that noise is really bad when its turning over
the dowel is in the wrong hole.... I had this exact issue on mine the other week, took he starter off and moved the dowel and it was sweet as a nut :)
From memory, but I can't be 100% sure, if you were looking from the front of the engine down onto the starter motor the dowel goes in the top rear bolt hole.
I suppose the way to do it is remove your starter and swap it into the other hole!
Nice one mate il give that a try and see what that does just so annoying now!
i tried changing the dowel over earlier fitted all back up and it sounded worse :crap:
had the starter off ebay.. its got r9-T on it renault 9 turbo? its smaller starer compared to the big 5 one.. but even with my old starter still got the same noise.:confused:

Someone else will hopefully be able to answer this but that isn't one of those supposedly 'uprated' starter motors is it?
Could be a case of the old one had a genuine problem and the replacement just isn't suitable, only reason I say this is because some members have fitted a different type before that caused problems/chewed flywheels etc.
Dont think its uprated, just said on the ad on ebay that its a recon like its abit smaller than the gtt one i had but not sure why its doing it as my old my old starter done it aswel

When you moved the dowel did you move the bolt to that hole also?
Yeah moved the bolt to the same hole.. Bolted on exactly how the haynes says:confused:
And link to starter: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-RENAULT-R-5-9-11-19-21-STARTER-MOTOR-S505-/290531896273?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43a50cebd1#ht_5566wt_689
Getting so anoying now! :crap: only get weekends to do it aswel
ok so its pissing me off real bad now.. dont know what it is. iv stripped the box off.. checked flywheel teeth no grinding marks at all. no marks on the starter carnt see anything that would be catching to make the noise.. its really got me :confused::confused::confused:

clutch plate stuck, try starting it in gear with your foot pressed on the clutch like you were doing. it should dissengage. failing that, if your wheels are off the ground. accelerate a little then brake quite harsh. keep trying a little faster and faster, even accelerating then brake while accelerating. all the time with your clutch pressed.
is your flywheel cover plate on ? if so take it off to see if its catching on anything too
sorry just read your last post.....can you see your clutch fork moving when you depress the clutch?

Never had it running before.. First time its all cme back together sinve stripping it and putting back togther from scratch like
is there a chance that the clutch has been put on the wrong way round
Took the plate off before to see if it was that stil the same.. The clutch fork is moving but just carnt be engaging enough??
Also thats the reason i took the box off to see if clutch was on wrong way but wasnt.. :crap:
Really dont know what else it could be but definately sound comes from flywheel geadbox area????
is there loads of slack on the clutch cable?
is the adjuster under the pedal working?
the pedal seems slightly softer than usual i think as they are quite hard anyways.. but the mechanism seems to be working fine..
iv also noticed when i crank the car the fork like moves side to side slightly is this supose to happen??

Fork moving when cranking may be due to the release bearing being a bit shagged n not rotating smoothly

not sure if this is any help but i bought a new starter from dingbro
and no matter where i put the dowell it still didnt engage properly
removed the dowell fitted the starter left the ignition off and jolted
the starter with a power probe agaain and again in various positions until it was spot on never had any probs since (4 years)
Cheers for the info mate :)
Its like the starter is cranking the engine over at a good speed just has that horrible noise when doing it:confused::confused:
Anoying me now to what it is
Did you rule out the clutch plate being the wrong way round?
yes mate thought that would of been the problem i took the box off and put it all back together.. with new dowel stil the gringing noise:confused::confused:
modfather
28-03-2011, 21:08
how about the gearbox itself being the problem
Thats what i was thinking:crap: my mates got a spare one i might try that see if that solves the problem, the noise if definately from that area aswel..
The lot coming back out the weekend going to try a different box see what that does..
