;) Good stuff

From memory the one I did was a ROYAL pain in the arse to get it out as the bearing had seperated and become one with the rust - oh the joy

Good work nice mod that. Did you find the exact size bearings then, 72 x 40 x 25?

Perhaps a bit cheeky to ask as you have gone to the effort to sort this out but just wondering if you were willing to share the part numbers and dimensions for the steel sleeves so I could get some knocked up :p

Aren't they supposed to have a rubber bit though to damp the vibration & flex a little under side load ??
I'm not sure if it's different with a torsion bar as I'm thinking of my old Rover where you could replace those trailing arm bushes with poly ones...

the pug 306 guys get roller bearing rear beams....so why shouldnt the gt turbo peeps?

peugeot/citroen ones are also rubbish, and wear into the axle destroying the bearings and beam in the process!!

Nice work Lee, you still up in Faslane?

Shakal, thanks for offering to sort a group buy out! This is a good mod, the best bushes are still 10 years old!

I am tempted to cut/re-weld the trailing arms and dial in a little some neggy camber if i take them off...

And peeps, when you re-fit your rear beam measure the wheel centres fwd to aft and also arch clearance side to side to make sure your alligned correctly ;) You can 'open' out the bolt holes a tad to achieve this...:agree: ;););)

Unfortunately yes, just went in the machine shop with a drawing and got someone to knock them up. Probably one of my favourites perks of the job, that and scrounging aluminium.

Don't quite get what you mean ?

check your rear beams position.. over the 20 years of being battered about they can be sat on the pi55, a full laser alignment machine will show you if you fancy a trip out..

while its all off it makes sense to get it straight.. id bolt mine up as good as i can get it, then take it to get a full laser track and adjust the rear myself while im there.. :)

that is if its possible, i've never felt the need to look at the rear beam enough so i could be smoking the crack pipe..

forgot all about these
just to clear a few things up
the bearings and sleaves worked great for me dont know what the long term effect wil be but ive only done 4000miles in 6 years so id guess minimal in my case

for all those intreasted mike 16v said he was going to make up kits dont know if he did or not

if not a visit to your local machine shop and a quick ebay purchace all in about £45
is all it takes:)

Evening all. I can spin the shafts up if needed. I won't be able to order the bearings though. Won't be able to sneak all them past the boss. Lol. All I need is the dimensions/drawing.

rhys0_0
29-08-2011, 23:22
The bearings can be ordered a load of places really. But I would have though a local toolmakers will charge stupid prices for the shafts. I'll make them and people can order the bearing. Need the dimensions of the bearing or part number though.

Don't know if anyone made any of these
If your intrested there's a tech drawing on my profile of the sleaves
And here's a link to the bearings I bought. 320281686954 eBay item number

Also when the rear beam was off I ended up fitting new handbrake cables/brake pipes
And as both nipples were broken by the previous owner bothe calipers were also changed
So keep mikes number handy;)

just noticed on ur rear axil pic
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/attachment.php?attachmentid=9276&d=1299765646
a bit of corrosion between the arm casting and the L-shaped beam.....could be a common problem as i have a bit on mine and i hope to make a repair for it with pics
THE corrosion lifts the L-beam at the corner and could eventually break!!
Worth checking.:(

I've just done my beam and bushes and dam good wire brush and paint and it's fine. It's come up a treat. I'm sure it will be fine bud it's lasted this long.

Can you do this with the beam on the car?

Can you do this with the beam on the car?

I took the beam off an the garage had to burn the rubbers then air saw the bushes collapse them hammer them out grind the area clean then press them back in.. He said he would never touch them again :) I'd say not personally but someone might be barmy enough to hae a go.. They have just been in too long I think and all that water over the years has made them solid.. He charged me £60

michael tierney
20-07-2015, 21:21
Can you do this with the beam on the car?

u have to take the whole axil down.......not too big a job but the four large nuts normally wont come down because of corrosion underneath the nylon part of the nuts but can be cut with a dremel to relieve some pressure.
nuts can be got at
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321432686669?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=510299072867&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
m12x1.25
i drilled the rubbers out and prised the centres out...then got a small hammer and screwdriver at the outer bushing sleeve. u have to cut the origional bushing inner sleeve with a hacksaw to seperate it from the main axil

Alex

I'm seriously thinking about doing this job over the winter as I plan on raising the rear suspension anyway. It looks like a pig of a job to me. You can buy the bushes on eBay cheaply so I might get some ordered.

Ian S

I nice guide with good pictures would be good for the article section.

Then a kit of parts in the shop to save people having to search eBay, etc, for them.

This is what I got from eBay from the above number: http://www.ebay.ie/sch/sis.html?_nkw=Rubber%20Sealed%20Ball%20Bearing%206 207%202RS%20C3%2035%20x%2072%20x%2017mm&_itemId=320281686954

Are people doing this with bearing and metal tube or using the replacement rubber?

Does the metal bearing lead to harshness, noise, vibration?
