View Full Version : No bling at the 'Ring (and Spa) 2011

It's been a good couple of years since I last sorted an rtoc trip to the Nordschleife, and given I've been a bit slack with the UK trackdays too (sorry! :ashamed:), I thought I'd try to make amends by arranging a trip to ze vaterland for this year.

I mentioned on a previoud thread about a trackday at Spa Francorchamps early October. It would make sense to combine a trip to/couple of days at the 'Ring, given it's only 90 clicks or so away, around the same time, but then I also appreciate it would then be an expensive few days away, even more so with the current price of fuel/the fact it'll probably increase come Summer/Autumn time :crap:

The Spa trackday is on Monday 3rd October & Tuesday 4th October, and the current price is ~£240 for either day. I'm hoping to get at least 10% off that, assuming we can get good numbers.

The Autumn opening times for the 'Ring haven't yet been released, so it may be a case that we spend the weekend there, then Spa on Monday/Tuesday, or alternatively, Monday/Tuesday at Spa, followed by a couple of days at the 'Ring (which of course would mean more days off work).

If the 'Ring isn't open around the Spa trackday, I guess we go with the majority decision of either just driving Spa, or visiting the 'Ring later on in October/November.

Price wise, it's now €24 for 1 lap, €89 for 4 laps, €310 for 15 laps. Let's hope Redline mag' have another 'Ring special/free laps bonaza before we go!

So, to get the ball rolling, could you add you name to this thread if you're interested in going, either to just the Nordschleife, just the Spa trackday, or both.

I'll let the name 'list' run until the end of this month, and will then contact the Spa trackday organisers (assuming it gets a favourable vote), hotels, ferry companies for prices.

I'm well aware it won't be the cheapest of trips/rtoc events, but I will try my hardest to get us the best prices.

Any questions, by all means please ask.

Well pending the track beast working (of course it will ) def interested in Spa, due to race car not been allowed on the road I fear it will not get on the ring  so not sure how the trip side of things will work out - not much fun dragging a trailer cross country either

And of course my biggest current worry for a big track are the current ratios of the box which are DEF not upto Spa sized tracks so some costs to raise to rebuild the box but 100% NEED a track day there again

We may have to just do the Spa bit but see how it pans out, plenty of vx's I have built I could steal for a weekend if it came to it (the fools lol)

So in true forum fashion

1. Mart & Bekki
2. Duncan & Sarah
3. Rob & Sammy - 50% share of the track beast
4.
5.

And if you dont start driving that Evo properly I am using it :cooter:

Me and Mich are up for this :D

Even though she won't get in the 5 on a motorway here, she's quite happy to jump aboard for a track day and trek across europe...clearly my wife doesn't trust me

Due to the nature of our business we may not be able to do both days so we are definitely up for at least one of them...I'm loving the idea of nailing the 5 around Spa or The 'Ring :agree:

I'm super excited and looking forward to breaking my RTOC euro cherry :wasntme:

 :wasntme:

Gibbo, it's a good craic mate and worth saving up for. We don't go there that often (as a club anyway), but everyone's always enjoyed it when we do, and it's always a good bunch of people that go. Add on the awesomeness of the Spa Francorchamps circuit, and double that for the sublime atmosphere at the 'Ring (and proof that it is the greatest road to drive, with it also being located in a v picturesque part of the world), add some German beers into the equation, good food (steak on a stone at the Pistenklause is a must), good laughs with everyone, and a real camaraderie feel, and it all makes for a top few days away.

When you get back home, you'll be itching for a 2012 trip out there :)

Bigfoot
04-03-2011, 18:55

Good to see you on board, Sam, Leigh, Timmy  :)

The Spa trackday will take place on Monday 3rd October and is in collaboration with Circuit Days (www.circuit-days.co.uk (http://www.circuit-days.co.uk)). They come highly recommended, have a very good reputation, and after exchanging emails with Chris Hoey (who runs the show), I have no doubt that this will be a blinder of a trackday, and hopefully the start of more trackdays with his company, as well as our, and not forgetting, good friends at Track-action online of course.

Price wise, with a bit of haggling, it's £225 per car.

That in itself is a great price for a Spa trackday, but here's some extra winnity win: There's no additional costs for extra drivers & passengers (although there is a limit of 4 drivers/passengers per car), so if you & a couple of mates, for example, wanted to share the trackday driving 1 car, that's £75 each. Lovely jubbly :)

I'll move this thread to the (October) Events section at some point over the weekend, and will mention then how to pay, what to quote for the discount, etc.

Regarding Nurburgring, the October opening dates haven't been released yet (and probably won't be for a couple more months), so it could be that we go to the 'Ring on the weekend before Spa, the weekdays after Spa, or maybe not at all (depending upon those opening dates).

That'll dictate hotels & ferry crossings, unless the majority now just want to go to Spa instead? If so, I can start looking into the aforementioned now...

Spa trackday payment details...

Please book your space by calling Circuit Days on 01302 743827, and for the £225 price, quote 'Renault Turbo Owners Club' when booking.

Because of the popularity of Spa trackdays, they can't reserve us any spaces unfortunately, so this is on a 'first come, first served' basis, hence I'd advise paying asap.

If you decide to leave it a few months until payment, don't blame me if there's then no spaces available for you!

Emailed you back Mart but I am 95% certain for this one and may just book up at the end of the month. Just in the back of my mind have reservations of the new track beast been ready for a full attack of Spa - It highlighted stg 2 mods to the old VAG R5 there back in the day with temps but then the std 1.4 polo rad with 270bhp was never really not the best idea :sad2: and a decent alloy job solved it :coffee:

I hope Mallory will be a good shake down but would really like a bigger track to test it to distruction before dragging it over on a trailor. See what I can fit in over the summer :agree:

Some friends just back from Spa in the vx220's and brought back all the GREAT memories of that track day....it REALLY is that good

However, due to lack of interest, I'm going to close this thread & end any organising involvement there.

Just to let people know, incase anyone is still considering the Spa trackday and/or a drive out there for the weekend, that the Nordschleife is open all day on the Saturday & Sunday before the Spa event on Monday.

However, it isn't open the weekdays after Spa/Monday.

I'll unlock this thread for a while, just incase there's now a renewed interest in going...

Dunc, that very first pint, sitting on the bench outside Gunther's, is something I'll never forget. A crazy 24hr prior to that, to the peace, tranquility and 'we're here at last' feeling, supping a beer & watching the world go by. Great times :)

Just weighing up 2 options:

Saturday at the Ring, spend Saturday night at Gunthers.

Sunday some of the day at the Ring then head over to Spa and stay near Spa Sunday night so we're near the track for the Monday.

Or 2 nights at Gunthers....... leaning to Saturday night at Gunthers then to Spa.

Ferry side of things, looking at booking 6am Saturday and coming back Monday 8pm

I remember being over there on rememberance sunday.... thats what the party in the pub was.....

We were in the hall at the back... and thinking sh*t were in a pub in germany on rememberance sunday.... and the all of the sudden a marching band come out behind the curtains.... i thought we were gonna be in the ****...

But instead they were up for a laugh, got ricky & becky on the stage, TK & tricky were there... tricky had his eyes on vanessa(or something like that) & then we were invited to the nightclub.... downstairs in a basement..... decorated like a dungeon.... typical 6ft german lads there 6ft tall, leather jackets, big boots, muscles everywhere..... turns out they were a good laugh, lots of arm wressle's, mart taking over tthe dj booth...

A quality night all round

- Early ferry crossing from Dover Saturday morning, or the Newcastle-Amsterdam ferry Friday night if that works out a cheaper option.
- 'Ring laps when we get there.
- Gunther's Saturday night.
- Easy come, easy go for Sunday daytime.
- Staying at/near Spa Sunday night (only because of the early start on Monday morning).
- Track event on Monday.
- Stay local Monday night.
- Then maybe upto Brugges for a couple of days, Tuesday onwards.

That's my plan so far...

It's looking like the plan is to drive out to Germany on Saturday morning, drive some laps of the 'Ring, stay local Saturday night, more laps on Sunday, then upto you whether you want to stay local again for the Sunday evening, or head over to Spa, stay local there for the night, then the trackday on Monday if you fancy driving or spectating.

That's the way I read it anyway.

I was actually going to pm mart later to confirm I wont be attending, me and charlotte have got the green light from everybody to buy our house... so no ring trips for me this year :(, hopefully a sneaky one next year if funds allow...

On a positive note, I am keeping the silver ph1, got a nice 1.8 16v engine to go in...

Alex (all being well) and Steve & Sarah are hopefully going to be there as well :)

Sammy Davis Marmoy was hinting at going as well, although he said that might be a last minute decision.

You fancy it now Ricky?

Indeed, as it's only 4 weeks away i'd imagined the people going have the hotel(s) booked and the ferry crossing times to hand :)

Mart
04-09-2011, 17:52
A subtle line of questioning there :D

I can't speak for the others, but no, I haven't yet booked any crossings, simply because, given the trackday's on a Monday, I haven't decided whether to get the overnight ferry from up here Saturday night, or Dover ferry sometime Sunday.

And then there's the option, maybe, of bringing both of those options forward 24hr, and spending the Saturday/night at Nurburg.

Ricardo
04-09-2011, 18:01
OK, glad i've not booked the ferry crossing yet :D

My plan was to go real early Saturday (6am crossing) to make the most of the day and to catch the 8pm ferry back on the Monday evening. This gives me the opportunity to be at Spa all day Monday (for that pax lap ;))

The ferry price for DFDS is £38 return for those sailing times minus the card charge

Mart
04-09-2011, 18:08
Aii mate, a pax lap or 10 won't be a problem :)

If you're going out there early doors Saturday, is that direct to Spa or via the 'Ring for the day/night? (there's not that much to do in Spa for 2 full days)

Ricardo

Straight to Nurburgring Saturday/night, wouldn't mind doing 2-3 laps. Then either Spa Sunday night or Nurburgring, i don't mind as obviously i don't wanna be on me own :D would like to chew the fat over a few beers

Seems like only a handful of peeps going and still no info about times and who's staying where.

Just been speaking to Bex - If you're a definate for the 'Ring on Saturday/night, then we can make it as well :) I'll let you know what we decide about ferry crossings though...

We have a hotel booked for the Sunday night at Spa (I'll PM you the details of that one), but we can drive there any time on Sunday as we're booked in there Monday night as well.

Happy to stay anywhere in Nurburg/Adenau on the Saturday night.

Mart, found a hotel on booking.com in Adenau for the Saturday, 115 euros the night for a double room (steep?) looks nice :agree:

Town location so the bars should be open, and they give 10 euros off for a lap on the Ring :D

886 miles
18 gallons
49MPG inc 4 laps of the Ring

That makes it less than 2 tanks of fuel there and back as it's an 11 gallon tank  :D

Absolutely awesome 3 days away, you couldn't have picked a more perfect weekend for weather.

Managed to get all the way to the Nurburgring from home on 1 tank of fuel, we stopped 130 miles short for a break and Evo petrol top up with the Clio averaging 53MPG

Steak on a stone Saturday was something else, wow i can't believe in the 4 years of going this was my first time!

4 laps done on the Sunday, the Clio performed really well, the first time i could really open her up. Anyway, dodgy vibration issues on the way to Spa Sunday afternoon, frantic phonecalls to Matt, Shoppers and Alex nearly saw a replacement driveshaft wing its way over from England. The problem tuned out to be 3 out of 4 wheel bolts loose.

Monday morning is mist so Spa doesn't open up till at least 11am, pax lap in the Evo and i'm impressed. No probs staying with the Aston Martin DB9 :) plenty of exotic machinery. Ferrari 458s absolutely stealing the show for me.

Miss the 8pm ferry due to 5 mile roadwork tailbacks and finally home for 2am after dropping co pilot Billy off.

Great weekend, great beer, great steak, great company. Bar the wheel bolts great Clio. There was plenty of banter, 1 liners etc

Link to a piccy of the Clio at the Ring, hopefully it'll work

Was (as always) a great few days at the Ring/Spa with great friends. Mightly impressed with Ricky's Clio, and even more so with the mpg figure he was achieving! Saying that, I was pretty chuffed to see 29mpg from the Evo on the journey out there.

Managed to wear the Evo's rear brake pads down to the metal, and then some (!), which meant trying to find a local pad stockist in deepest Belgium. Zilcho in Spa or its nearby towns (thanks again for ferrying me around Al'), tried several auto parts/garages en route to Dinant (where we're staying for a couple of days), all to no avail, then on arriving at the hotel here, what should be literally opposite us - Belgium's equivalent of a GSF oulet that also stocks Jap parts. Win! :D

Pads ordered & in within 24hr, and now fitted on the Evo. The old pads have fecked the discs (which will need replacing when I get back home), but at least we can now complete the rest of the holiday/drive home without any more metal-on-metal braking!

All good fun. Next stop, Antwerp.

PS, I've finally decided - I'm keeping the Evo... :dearme: :sad2:
