Do you need any exhaust paste on the exhaust manifold side of things?
I have seen stainless steel gaskets but heard that they are of no benefit. ANy pointers?
i always put some on......just to be on the safe side
It does sounds like a good idea, when my new turbo arrived it came with two stainless gaskets which i have never used before ? So i fitted them with the new studs and nuts and havent had any problems since.
Thinking about it, if i ever have to take it off i would definately use exhaust paste with the gaskets, the rest of my exhaust system seems to be put together in this way.
I took a stock turbo off a friends car which had never come off before, it didnt have anything between the joints at all, which i believe is standard?, it didnt show any signs of leakage around the joints though.

I would put a metal gasket on everytime as I've found some of the flanges aren't 100% true. I would not consider exhaust paste personally as it breaks up over time and I wouldn't want that ****e flowing through my turbo.

Out of all the paste, renaults paste was the best as it was thin, the thick stuff just breaks down with heat too easy.

+1 i'd never put anything that could flake before the turbo, its asking for trouble!

some people put feck all on there and have no problems, some do.. a thin bit of paste would help or the gasket if its blowing..
i think i've only had 1 gasket on 1 of my 5's the rest haven't..
its a case of do what you want, if it blows try again:)
If the mating faces are square, you shouldn't need to use a gasket (I never ran one on my old Raider, Trusty, or Whitey).
As has been said, never use paste on the manifold/turbo faces.

Alright them, a real mixed bag. I'll be going commando. Cheers you guys.
Never use paste, if the surfaces are as flat it will seal fine. If not fit one of those stainless gaskets, they work fine as they crush when you tighten the bolts.
Obviously if the faces are a mile out of true just get it machined up, or pikey file it true like i have in the past.
