Anyone know where to get a suitable item to strap the cooler with? Is it some kind of huge jubilee clips or it is a more like an industrial cable tie? I've been looking for something suitable but can't find it. Also I'm aiming to run about 20 PSI, does the thermal flap jobby at the top of the cooler break at these kind of pressures or is it ok?

Just take 3 big sized jubilee clips, fasten them together and you'll have 1 big one... if you catch my drift ;) :smokin:

Is that seriously the best way to do it? I guess it would match the rest of my car's bodged look... lol

 that's right

And regarding that flap... remove the thermostat and insert a suitable bolt which keeps the flap opened at all times matey ;)

I have used my local dive shop as they do large Jubilee clips to go round dive tanks so you only need one.

Although this time of years not the best time to start sorting the flap out... i'd wait till next summer. Did anyone say carb freeze :crap:

My double capacity alloy intercooler doesn't have such a silly flap.... never had any "carb freeze"... never even heard of it! :)

I've never suffered from it either, but it does exist;

i had a gtt double core and a pace single core and got carb freeze on both:( proof they were doing a better job than standard during normal driving..

mines got a fabric strap, Renault must have fitted it as the old boy that owned it wouldn't have taked it to a chooner or done it himself while upping boost..:p one of the techs must have been bored and strapped it as it has a RenFSH up till i got it:)

What exactly happens when your carb freezes? How can you recognize it whilst driving?

Car splitters, judders, black smoke, power drops and it grinds to a stop. Engine slowly warms the carb while your sat there holding up traffic, fires up like nothing happened and off you go for another few miles. I found high revs and a blast sorted it, low revs and high speed cause it, 40-70 in fifth.

Everybody's missed the big issue here "Also I'm aiming to run about 20 PSI,"
Standard intercooler!! No chance :D. Core is going bye bye!

Good spot

16/17psi is the absolute max for the standard intercooler... ACT's get way too high after that point (for as long as the intercooler lasts anyway).

FMIC / Chargecooler, is the best route for big boost :agree:

So it will definitely destroy the core if run to 20PSI?

No it won't destroy the core its the intercooler just doesn't work effectively at the boost pressure

20 psi @ manifold or carb top , Will split the core no prob's

Try it

That's why they strap them ,to try and stop it happening.
