Just bought this car off ebay rather hastily, it needs more work than i thought and i
paid £1950 for it.

As it stands, its probably £950 too expensive as a base project car.

Do i get rid (get as much as i can) or keep it and sell wheels / seats etc to put towards a respray.

The car is a 1991 78K.

Any advice greatly appreciated.....

Thats been on eBay loads of times, even by different accounts, possible purchase and then quick sell on, did they have the V5 with it?

As for the car, whats up with it? whats needing doing, or is it just a full respray to get it up to the way you like it.

Just looked again, and more than likely using each others accounts to bump up the price as they won the car originally and then put it back on eBay under another account.

are they proper bbs splits, if so they will sell on easilly for good money, the value of these cars is on the increase so dont feel to disheartened if its not mint.

+1. Just enjoy it.. over time with a few quid spent, you should be able to get it to how you want it.

Love those wheels too!

Body work wise, Needs a full re-spray, some welding to rear 1/4s under wheel arches. Underneath does look OK, no holes. (Alot of rust scabs). Stickers need replacing.

Engine tappets noisy, runs pretty poor / hoses and wiring cocked together.

Wheels i will sell if good money and put std ones on.

Just a bit disheartened as i probably could have got a minter for £3000.....

Just not sure if i paid to much ??..

Tried to give you advice matey, :cooter:
Seriously though nearly all these cars need some tlc, its does normaly work out better buying one from a fellow member as alot of members are very hands on.
So do you keep ploughing money in or do you bail? Only you can answer that. :D

as above most of these will need some work doing they are quite old now but sooo:cool:

keep it mate and make it mint iv spent loads on mine up to yet and more to come im sure members on here could help sort the engine and selling them wheels would raise a bit of funds go towards parts etc

Doesnt sound to bad if its taxed and tested, why not just give it a good mop over, it will probbaly come out mint, you could always save up and do the other bits over time

dont feel to hard, from teh sounds of it you paid slightly to much , but not £950..

as i was saying if there splits the wheels will fetch good money £500+. really my advice would be to start at the engine and the "scabs of rust, worry about the paint etc last as thats easy.. if any of them scabs of rust hole then its a bigger job and i expect some may well do that.

Get that bodykit off, front, back bumper, side-skirts and arches. Then you'll have a better idea wether your gonna keep it or not.

£800 For Full Respray If I Strip It ?

Mate they're all 20 years old now at least so you've got to expect a little bit of rough with the smooth but don't sit there thinking that £3000 would get you a minter! Different people's ideas of Mint may not live up to your expectations!

The points to check are:

Rear bumper mounts (take the bumper off & see what's behind it)
Both Inner & Outer Arches both sides (Carpets Up & Side Skirts off)
Front Windscreen Scuttle panel
Jacking Points
£1950 & £1000 on bodywork = £2950 and you will know that it's all good! ;)

EVERYTHING's fixable in one way or another!!

Have to agree with djinuk too... I seriously doubt that it's a £1k car. It would need to be really ropey tbh, maybe at least a £1500 car if it's got MOT, tax, and is mostly complete

Dependant on rust/corrosion of body work that is

I wouldn't dream of paying £3.5k for a respray tbh. Unless it was going for an all out, factory finish, bare metal job, with LOTS of welding done.

I paid £900 for mine, and that was an inside out, inc. engine bay job. Granted I stripped the car, but that was about a 3 day job (definitely recommend doing this yourself), and I probably should have done the welding myself, as I had to do some after the paint job. The actual paint is spot on though IMO.

Look you little rascal... i said after dependant on corrosion etc... also depends where in the country you live...

I payed massive amount on mine as i bought it for 250 quid as a **** box with mega rust...

Its not all about the respray its about labour and metal working..:cooter:

thanks for the advice, not too gutted about the state of the car, i was just a bit gutted that id payed too much for what it is.

I have decided if the wheels and leather seats get me a chunk towards the re-spray then i think im gonna go for it.

Wheels are in the tech section of the forum trying to find out what BBS wheels they are.

J8TRO
25-02-2011, 21:24
I dont know what BBS they are but with a tyre stretch like that, i'm guessing they came off a MK1 or maybe MK2 golf. If you want to make money, sell em to the VW boys, they tend to pay more for their parts that us Renault pikeys! :D

Edit: This should have been on your wheel thread..........sorry

my total paint bill was near 3.5k, but worth every penny as it still looks fresh 4 years later

:agree: you definitely have to pay if you want a quality paint job.
bric im not knocking you paint job on your baby blue 5 but im sure i recall(in your rebuild thread) that you started to develop rust spot near the arches! and although it looks good:agree: i still wouldnt be happy about it, all depends on how anal you are about the paint finish. but i suppose these are the little probs you get with cheap paint jobs.

Engine tappets noisy, runs pretty poor / hoses and wiring cocked together.

All that should be a relatively easy fix you can sort yourself, get that sorted so it's running sweet that way you can enjoy the car while you consider what to do with the bodywork.

i would sort the rusty areas for know and get the car mechanically sound. Seen so many nice 5s but let down with running issues. Running right, mot and tax is the key to enjoying one. My raider stands me at 4 grand, is a cat d and just gets better everytime i work on it. Enjoy!

It does not sound to pricey if you ask me, i looked a some real rotter's for £1000, then again you can hit lucky like brigsy and buy a nearly mint car for £1600.

I paid £600 just for a roling shell and really thats all it was.

Like mentioned get the bumpers off side skirts have a good look. Get some pictures up if unsure. Get in with a grinder do and welding treat with some por15. Give the car to a painter and put it back together, job done :)

OK seats sold, wheels next (need good money).

Gonna strip it, engine out to clean up and check for wear new headgasket, clutch etc whilst out and maybe paint rocker / block new hoses.

Paint job and re-build to standard bodywork interior wheels, thats the plan anyway....

personally dude, id tackle one thing at a time.. once u get all the kit off and engine out you will wish you didnt start.. id certainly hit the bodywork first.. thats the biggest problem imo with these things.

mm perfect measuring down from the higher swage line. Lower door pins not in yet + I got the old doors on new shell so the strikers need a tweek.
