View Full Version : Turbo help
Evening all i recently bought a used turbo through the club and had a full rebuild done by AdamL. Today i fitted it and noticed the turbo face that joins to the big jim is completely shot:cry: tried to fit it anyway but it sounded like a tractor.
I have recently spent about £750 on this turbo and frontpipe and have had loads of grief getting it to fit together having to customize scorpion system, hunt oil feed adapters, oil feeds.gaskets etc and today i thought i was finally there :(
Any ideas what i can do to fix this? Does this mean a new exhaust housing and rebuild will be needed or is there some other fix as i even thought about welding big jim to the turbo earlier:eek:
Have you checked the face of the downpipe also, not just turbo?
Yeah did that first with a file and square as it was out didnt even think to check the turbo face :(
Ah sorry I got the impression you thought the turbo was out, so it's the downpipe that isn't flat?
Unfortunately it is the turbo face thats out the downpipe is spot on now.Even tried fitting with and without a gasket.
I'm sure you could probably just flat it, Adam will be able to advise. I only asked about thw downpipe as he's had a few people with same problem and the meeting face of the pipe has been "like a banana" lol. Give him a tinkle in the morning if someone else here hasn't had the same thing with a 2nd hand turbo :)
Yeah i did think to flatten it but was scared of getting swarfeyturd inside the nice new parts :scared:
Good point. Just call Adam in the morning, he'll be in from 8 :)

Are the exhaust housings not checked and skimmed accordingly when a rebuild is undertaken? Or is this an extra service? Im not trying to annoy anyone just asking incase in the future, i decide to have a second hand unit rebuilt.
Yeah ill give him a bell thanks :)

They either warp or crack, i have plenty of cracked items :(
I did notice the housing had a crack as well but thought it was normal-ish are they expensive to replace?

Cracks are fine if hairline size but if they start to open up then it's failure at some stage, plenty of experience with that.

Ouch... All in that would make it cheaper to have bought a new turbo
take the studs out and give it a quick skim on a milling machine :agree:
